However, the transition to electric vehicles (EV) portends major changes in vehicle manufacturing activity, on which many livelihoods in Europe depend. Using the heterogeneity across European countries in the speed of transition to EV production and variation in sectoral and regional exposure to the automotive sector, this paper offers early evidence of the labor market implications of the EV transition. Our results suggest that the transformation of the auto sector is already having an adverse impact on employment in the affected sectors and regions, which can be expected to grow at least in the near term. Many of the affected workers will be able to retire and our analysis suggests that those who will have to transition to new “greener” jobs have a fair chance to do so when compared to other workers in the manufacturing sector. Furthermore, we find evidence that active labor market policies, specifically training, can help to reduce the adjustment costs for the affected workers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though Dillon’s wife, Doris, passed away after more than 50 years of marriage, her death didn’t diminish the relationship they’d shared. Instead, it enabled a second act to be added to their story, one that proved that love doesn’t have to die, but sometimes just requires a slightly altered ending. 82-year old Dillon Everette lost his wife to pancreatic cancer in April 2029. Following her death, Dillon remained in his home, but his three children thought that he should move to a retirement community, and perhaps even cease to drive due to a few mishaps of his that disturbed them. They loved their father, but Dillon, who still conversed with his deceased wife, strove to maintain his independence. The children’s infringement on his life provoked Dillon to escape from his home and them by planning a trip south in his 1953 MG TD, which he’d rebuilt himself nearly 35 years ago. Assisted by his financial advisor, he made sure that his house, property and finances were in order, and decided to retrace some of the trips taken during his earlier life with his wife and young family by heading south in the MG on his deceased wife’s birthday, November 13th. After a few days on the road, he became involved in an incident from which he emerged a hero and acclaimed for his bravery on national news. His children read and heard about their father’s adventure, and thought he had lost his mind and, but Dillon was approached by a documentary film producer to possibly record the story of his life and his accomplishments. The Little Green Car is about aging, the desire for independence, and the possibilities of a life that extends past the age of what many would call “elderly.” It’s about how we see ourselves as we get older as well as how others see us. It’s also about the ways we can look ahead. plans for the future, while understanding the inevitability and the limitations of our lives moving forward.

Book excerpt: As rush hour came to a close on the evening of May 25, 1950, one of Chicago's new fast, colorful, streamlined streetcars—known as a Green Hornet—slammed into a gas truck at State Street and 62nd Place. The Hornet's motorman allegedly failed to heed the warnings of a flagger attempting to route it around a flooded underpass, and the trolley, packed with commuters on their way home, barreled into eight thousand gallons of gasoline. The gas erupted into flames, poured onto State Street, and quickly engulfed the Hornet, shooting flames two hundred and fifty feet into the air. More than half of the passengers escaped the inferno through the rear window, but thirty-three others perished, trapped in front of the streetcar's back door, which failed to stay open in the ensuing panic. It was Chicago's worst traffic accident ever—and the worst two-vehicle traffic accident in US history. Unearthing a forgotten chapter in Chicago lore, The Green Hornet Streetcar Disaster tells the riveting tale of this calamity. Combing through newspaper accounts as well as the Chicago Transit Authority's official archives, Craig Cleve vividly brings to life this horrific catastrophe. Going beyond the historical record, he tracks down individuals who were present on that fateful day on State and 62nd: eyewitnesses, journalists, even survivors whose lives were forever changed by the accident. Weaving these sources together, Cleve reveals the remarkable combination of natural events, human error, and mechanical failure that led to the disaster, and this moving history recounts them—as well as the conflagration's human drama—in gripping detail.

Stock car racing took the city by storm in its inaugural season of 1951, drawing crowds of up to 7,000 in a city of only 18,000. Soon thereafter, the city attracted the Chevrolet Corvette assembly plant followed by the National Corvette Museum. Images of Sports: Bowling Green Stock Car Racing documents the history of stock car racing in Bowling Green and the emergence of the raceway at Beech Bend Park. Larry Upton is a bank executive in Gilbert, Arizona. He has written for the Journal of Commercial Bank Lending and the Journal of Arizona History. Jonathan Jeffrey, special collections librarian at Western Kentucky University's Kentucky Library, has written a number of books about the city's heritage. Many of the images used in this book came from the collection of Marshall Love Jr.
