Hodnett (University of Limerick, Ireland), H. Martens (Norwegian Institute of Technology, Trondheim), S. McKee (University of Strathclyde, Scotland), H. NeURzert (University of Kaiserslautern, Germany), D. Sundstrom (The Swedish Institute of Applied Mathematics, Stockholm), A. Tayler (University of Oxford, England) and Hj. Wacker (University of Linz, Austria). The European Consortium for Mathematics in Industry is dedicated to: (a) promote the use of mathematical models in Industry (b) educate industrial mathematicians to meet the growing demand for such experts (c) operate on a European scale. ECMI is still a young organisation but its membership is growing fast. Although it has still to persuade more industrialists to join, ECMI certainly operates on a European scale and a flourishing postgraduate programme with student exchange has been underway for some time. It is perhaps fitting that the first open meeting of ECMI was held at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow. Glasgow is and was the industrial capital of Scotland and was, and arguably still is, Britain's second city after London; when this volume appears it will have rightly donned the mantle of the cultural capital of Europe.

The Wacker Prize, which is offered for a Masters Level thesis on an industrial problem, always attracts excellent entries and this year's winner, Nicole Marheineke, is no exception. This is the first time that an ECMI conference has been held in Eastern Europe and the ECMI Council is very grateful to Professor Andris Buikis and his colleagues in Latvia and Lithuania for the excellent job they have done. Thanks too go to the European Union which supported 30 delegates at this conference via TMR Contract No ERBFMRXCT 97-0117 'Differential Equations in Industry and Commerce'. Participants from all over the world met with the commonaimofreinforcingthe roleofmathematics asanoverarching resource for industry and business. The conference attracted over 300 participants from 30 countries, most of them participating with either a contributed talk, a minisymposium pres- tation or a plenary lecture. ‘Mathematics in Industry’ was interpreted in its widest sense as can be seen from the range of applications and techniques described in this volume. We mention just two examples. The Alan Tayler Lecture was given by Mario Primicerio on a problem arising from moving oil through pipelines when temperature variations a?ect the shearing properties of wax and thus modify the ?ow. The Wacker Prize winner, Master’s student Lauri Harhanen from the Helsinki University of Technology, showed how a novel piece of mathematics allowed new software to capture real-time images of teeth from the data supplied by present day dental machinery (see ECMI Newsletter 44). The meeting was attended by leading ?gures from government, bu- ness and science who all shared the same aim – to promote the application of innovative mathematics to industry, and identify industrial sectors that o?er the most exciting opportunities for mathematicians to provide new insight and new ideas.

Like its predecessors the Lahti meeting was devoted to the exchange of experience, ideas and methods from various fields of industrial mathematics. The series of ECMI conferences have clearly established an important forum of interaction between the advancing front of technology and one of its crucial development resources, modern applications-oriented mathematics. The precise title of the conferences has been the subject of some discussion and it has been argued that there is no such area which can be labelled as "industrial mathematics". This is certainly true if one thinks only in terms of the range of ideas, theorems, methods and algorithms constituting mathematics all of which may be applied. However with another viewpoint industrial mathematics is not a collection of topics but refers to the interactive process in which mathematics, the science, meets the real world of applications. Ideally this interaction involves both good mathematics and technological advance. The computer revolution has created a new era in technology with the increased computational capability to simulate complex industrial processes, devices, and other technolog making it possible ical systems. This simulation depends on mathematical modelling and analysis and these techniques, sometimes ingenious but often quite routine, have provided a powerful tool for industrial scientists and creative research management.

The present volume of papers is a selection among the almost 200 contributions to the con ference. As a logo on the announcements of the conference the organising committee chose a picture of the connection between Denmark and Sweden which is currently under construction. We chose this picture primarily because of the elegant and decorative lines of the bridge, but for other reasons as well: Denmark is a country of islands, and the art of building bridges has a long tradition here. Danish civil engineers have built bridges all over the world and have been rated among the most competent experts in their field. Many have acted as consultants as well as professors at the Technical University of Denmark, and one of them once said: To build a bridge you need steel and mathematics. We think that this selection of papers with its broad spectrum of industrial top ics proves that the importance of mathematics is continuously growing. Mathematics has penetrated subjects far beyond traditional engineering applications and in more and more places it becomes natural to add mathematics to the list of things you obviously need to succeed.
