Book excerpt: Toni Morrison and the Queer Pleasure of Ghosts radically intervenes in one of the most established and sacred topics in Toni Morrison scholarship, love. Moving beyond Morrison's representation of ghosts as the forgotten or occluded past, Juda Bennett uncovers how Morrison imagines the spectral sphere as always already queer, a provocation and challenge to heteronormativity—with the ghost appearing as an active participant in disruptions of compulsory heterosexuality, as a figure embodying closet desires, or as a disembodied emanation that counterpoints homophobia. From The Bluest Eye to Home, Morrison's novels have included many queer ghosts that challenge our most cherished conceptions of love and speak to cultural anxieties about black sexualities, gay marriage, AIDS, lesbian visibility, and transgender identities. Not surprisingly, the scene-stealing ghost Beloved appears at the very heart of this book, but Bennett cautions against interpretative stasis, inviting readers to break free of the stranglehold Beloved has had on imaginations, so as not to miss the full force of Morrison's lifelong project to queer love.

Book excerpt: On the morning of May 30, 1593, Christopher Marlowe met with three associates in the English intelligence network. Later that evening the Queen's coroner was summoned to their meeting place. A body lay on the floor. After an inquest, the dead man was taken to a nearby churchyard busy at the time receiving victims of the plague. According to the official report, England's foremost playwright was interred without fanfare or marker. Soon, plays attributed to William Shakespeare began to appear on the London stage, plays so undeniably similar to Marlowe's that noted scholars have since declared that Shakespeare wrote as if he had been Marlowe's apprentice. Marlowe's Ghost: The Blacklisting of the Man Who Was Shakespeare explores the possibility that persecution of a writer who dared to question authority may have led to the greatest literary cover-up of all time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gunter Anders' Philosophy of Technology is the first comprehensive exploration of the ground-breaking work of German thinker Gunter Anders. Anders' philosophy has become increasingly prescient in our digitised, technological age as his work predicts the prevalence of social media, ubiquitous surveillance and the turn to big data. Anders' ouevre also explored the technologies of nuclear power and the biotech concerns for the human and transhuman condition which have become so central to current theory. Babette Babich argues that Anders offers important resources on streaming digital media through his writings on radio, television and film and is, unusually, both a comprehensive and profound thinker. Anders' relationship with key philosophers like Hannah Arendt and Walter Benjamin and his thinking on Goethe, Nietzsche and Rilke is also explored with a focus on the deep impact he made on his peers. It reflects specifically on the intersection of Anders' thought Heidegger and the Frankfurt school and how influential a figure he was on the landscape of 20th century philosophy. A compelling rehabilitation of a thinker with profound contemporary relevance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sounding 4 begins with the first narrative of squatter George Russell followed by an echo on magistrate, soldier and later Crown Lands Commissioner for the Western District ‘Flogger’ Fyans. Expansion west and north-west from Geelong soon causes the Colac tribal collapse and later the government-sanctioned revenge massacre of the Gadubanud Cape Otway clans. Then follows the dispossession timeline of the Geelong / Ballarat Wathaurong people and the extensive contributions by Ian D Smith on Aboriginal geography and languages of the west, with clan organization, mechanisms of dispossession, Aboriginal responses, a geography of disruption and Aboriginal perceptions of Europeans in 19th century Victoria. For contrast is a section SANITIZED ‘FRONTIER’ PROFILES OF PROMINENT COLONIALS controlling the countryside until largely replaced by the bankers and gold-diggers. Moving further west is an echo titled WINNING & LOSING THE GRAMPIANS AND THE GLENELG RIVER before a complete reproduction of Dr Jan Critchett’s Distant Field of Murder. Ian Clark and George Russell reveal how the western plains were taken over after the ‘vanishing’ of the Djab Wurrung clans around the Hopkins River. Echoes of the KULIN SUNSET COUNTRY SETTLED and A SCOTTISH ARK GROUNDS AT ARARAT are settler versions largely from local history books of reminiscences by successful sheep and cattle pastoralists such as the Learmonth and Russell family dynasties. The sour joke that the Scots had the land, the Irish the pubs and the English the accent, does no justice to the role of guns, germs and money-making… Modern scholarship birthed echoes titled FRONTIER MAYHEM IN THE FAR WEST which include the tribal resistance of Jupiter, Cocknose, Roger, Doctor, Bumbletoe etc. defeated by the likes of Wathaurong guide Bon Jon with CCL Fyans and the mounted Wurundjeri and Bunurong members of Captain Dana’s Native Police. This is followed by Marie Fels on native police action and A. G. L. Shaw on frontier violence, with Dr Critchett’ overview on Framlingham Aboriginal Mission Station. Sounding 4 concludes with aftermath echoes titled KING DAVID, DAWSON’S INFORMANTS & THE CAMPERDOWN GEORGE OBELISK and echo 74: HINDSIGHTS ON THE CULTURE-CLASH FRONTIER. Part 1 of which is on Redmond Barry, terra nullius and the Bon Jon case and part 2 has historian Henry Reynolds challenging our national self-image.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Dost thou love life? Then do not squander time, for that's the stuff life is made oj': Benjamin Franklin This book describes the technical principles and applications of echo-planar imaging (EPI) which, as much as any other technique, has shaped the develop ment of modern magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The principle of EPI, namely, the acquisition of multiple nuclear magnetic resonance echoes from a single spin excitation, has made it possible to shorten the previously time-con suming MRI data acquisition from minutes to much less than a second. Interest ingly, EPI is one of the oldest MRI techniques, conceived in 1976 by Sir Peter Mansfield only 4 years after the initial description of the principles of MRI. One of the inventors of MRI himself, Mansfield realized that fast data acquisition would be paramount in bringing medical applications of MRI to full fruition. The technological challenges in implementing EPI, however, were formidable. Until the end of the 1980s few people believed that EPI would be clinically useful, since its complexity was far greater than that of "conventional" MRI methods.

Book excerpt: Only recently have scholars turned their attention to Silius Italicus' Punica, a poem the reputation of which was eclipsed by the emergence of Virgil’s Aeneid as the canonical Latin epos of Augustan Rome. This collection of essays aims at examining the importance of Silius' historical epic in Flavian, Domitianic Rome by offering a detailed overview of the poem's context and intertext, its themes and images, and its reception from antiquity through Renaissance and modern philological criticism. This pioneering volume is the first comprehensive, collaborative study on the longest epic poem in Latin literature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author of Georgia’s Civil War ghost books proves that the Peach State’s phantoms come in many forms. Every portion of central Georgia is thoroughly haunted. Tobe, the ghost of Orna Villa in Oxford, had an appetite for biscuits. Angry spirits near Augusta drove a family from a beautiful old home. Paranormal entities in a home cobbled together from three old houses created a tapestry of supernatural events. People still seek advice from a fortuneteller dead half a century, and a long-deceased girl hitches a ride home on the same night each year. Author Jim Miles presents a ghost story from each of the fifty-one counties in this historic region. “Every county in Georgia has at least one ghost story, and author Jim Miles has gathered them into three books. . . . Miles traveled to all 159 counties, as well as two counties that ‘went extinct’ during the Great Depression. The completion of the books was a 10-year project for Miles . . . The stories span all of Georgia history, from one with its origins 2,000 years ago to the latest in ‘scientific ghost hunting.’” —Gainesville Times
