Book excerpt: This is third book written in the series of a walk through my life. In this book I have found the courage to to write openly about my childhood abuse and subsequent mental breakdowns, the poems are in narrative form and have no hidden meanings. The reader will find many of them to be gritty with raw emotion. My hope is that they will help the reader to work through depression and suicidal tendencies either of their own or with those they love.

Book excerpt: Go ahead. Leave your loneliness behind. We all want to matter to someone, but the risks of relationship can seem far too great. It’s easier to just keep our distance. We fear embarrassment, misunderstandings, and even rejection, so we silently endure our loneliness. We work on trying to be nice–rather than being real–hoping that others will like us. Or we might simply give in to the path of least resistance–the life of hurry, impatience, and fatigue–which feels familiar and safe. We pay a terrible price to avoid authentic relationships. It’s time to stop denying your deepest longing–the desire to be known and loved. The Naked Soul shows you how to know and accept others, and how to be known and accepted by others. You can exchange the familiar but deadly territory of loneliness for the exhilaration of giving and receiving love. You don’t have to hide any longer. Break free from loneliness, be the person God created you to be, and start living a life that matters.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'The Bunsby Papers' is a collection of mythic stories written by John Brougham. A total of nine stories are to be found inside the book, some of which bearing the following titles: 'The Test of Blood', 'The Fairy Circle', 'The Morning-Dream', and 'The Gospel Charm'. The author has this to say about the stories featured inside: "With regard to the pages which follow, I have endeavored to imbue them more with a Hibernian spirit, than with any attempt at orthographic peculiarity, inasmuch as I consider it but a factitious species of wit which hinges upon an amount of bad spelling. I have, therefore, abstained in a great measure from perverting the language, only doing so where it is absolutely necessary to give individual character. Some of the sketches are now for the first time presented; others have before appeared, but such as they are, here they are; all I can say in their favor is, that they were drawn from no source but my own invention; could I have done better, be assured I would; and yet, although they are not as perfect as I might wish them to be, still, I am not without hope, that some amusement, and also—or my arrows have indeed been shot awry—some incentives to a deeper reflection than accompanies the mere story-telling, may be found scattered here and there amongst them."

Book excerpt: The volume brings together contributions on 15th and 16th century translation throughout Europe (in particular Italy, France, Spain, Portugal, Germany, and England). Whilst studies of the reception of ancient Greek drama in this period have generally focused on one national tradition, this book widens the geographical and linguistic scope so as to approach it as a European phenomenon. Latin translations are particularly emblematic of this broader scope: translators from all over Europe latinised Greek drama and, as they did so, developed networks of translators and practices of translation that could transcend national borders. The chapters collected here demonstrate that translation theory and practice did not develop in national isolation, but were part of a larger European phenomenon, nourished by common references to Biblical and Greco-Roman antiquities, and honed by common religious and scholarly controversies. In addition to situating these texts in the wider context of the reception of Greek drama in the early modern period, this volume opens avenues for theoretical debate about translation practices and discourses on translation, and on how they map on to twenty-first-century terminology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Every time we raise our voices, we hear echoes.” Jo-Anne Elder, from the Foreword Through short stories, journal entries and poetry, the women in Voices and Echoes explore the changing landscape of their spiritual lives. Experienced writers such as Lorna Crozier, Di Brandt and Ann Copeland, as well as strong new voices, appear to speak to each other as they draw from a wealth of personal resources to find a way to face life’s questions and discover meaning in their lives. There is something familiar about these stories and poems — they echo those we’ve heard before and those we’ve half forgotten. Whether they search for a voice in a world where men monopolize or journey into painful memories to free the self from the past, they do not despair, they do not end. Individual entries become the whole story — an unending story of rebirth and reaffirmation. The book begins with an illuminating foreword that introduces readers to the cultural and philosophical background of many of the stories, and concludes with the reflections of scholars, writers and artists that are intended to provoke further discussion.

Book excerpt: Much has been stated about poetry. "Poetry is what in a poem makes you laugh, cry, prickle, be silent, makes your toe nails twinkle, makes you want to do this or that or nothing, makes you know that you are alone in the unknown world, that your bliss and suffering is forever shared and forever all your own." Dylan Thomas "Poetry can be dangerous, especially beautiful poetry, because it gives the illusion of having had the experience without actually going through it." Rumi "Poetry is an echo, asking a shadow to dance." Carl Sandburg "Poetry is a word-fed spring flowing from the consciousness of the poet's mind." Régis Auffray With "A Stir of Echoes" it is the author's hope that the reader will be able to appreciate and perhaps to identify with the various situations, dilemmas, conflicts, miseries, euphoria, etc. that are expressed and consequently shared through his verses. The verses offer a glimpse into the author's soul and thus a way to get to know him more intimately.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jesus, that Holy night You invited me in, You knew how much anger I still harbored within. Too deep-rooted to simply release Far too long I’ve felt like an evil beast. But something changed today. My Naked Soul shares author Crystal Joy’s brutally honest and sometimes heart-wrenching poetic quest to make sense of her world. Inspired by her grandmother, Vinnie Collins, a Christian poet, she allows the spiritual forces behind her words to eventually scream of hope. In these verses, Crystal presents the perspective of a spiritually hot and cold soul struggling with past trauma and bipolar disorder. She knows she isn’t perfect and sometimes wants to simply surrender to life’s journey, but her fight to live always wins—or, more accurately, her faith in Jesus wins the victories for her. Crystal describes her spiritual wrestling match among sin, faith, grace, suicide, hope, praise, and redemption. She kneels at her Savior’s feet for dear mercy and praises Him. Through her pain and her triumphs, Crystal’s poetry shows one can never deny the work of Christ in her life. God is the only reason she is alive today.
