Book excerpt: This is a story of dysfunctional families and the effects encountered by one young woman who has been in a state of denial for decades. When the winds of change slowly blow in her direction-- this woman is reminded and convinced that her life has been a difficult one at best. She is forced to search her scattered and fragmented memories in an attempt to survive the unrelenting devastating blows of a difficult reality. The reality of her past begins to reveal it's haunting qualities early one morning after a disturbing dream and continues to grow while she survives one devastating blow after another. And through a persistant state of depression with a mutilated spirit and her amputated muse she begins therapy with a compassionate miracle worker. Her journey is a long one--as her therapist guides her though a maze of suppressed and repressed memories into recognition. And with recognition is a set of new eyes viewing and evaluating all of her choices while living in a life of denial that she created for existance. Survivng as a damaged person can dictate how a soul will evolve. An important component is the disposition of the person. A person's character dictates how the damaged person lives/survives and they usually know how to survive; it can be a negative or a positive life of survival. Survival depends strongly upon the individual, the boundaries and environment that they create to support his or her life. With the support of her family and friends she finds acceptance of her reality and purges her soul of a mistaken life style of fantasies.

Book excerpt: “Glasby anatomizes horror’s scare tactics with keen, lucid clarity across 34 carefully selected main films—classic and pleasingly obscure. 4 Stars.” —Total Film? Horror movies have never been more critically or commercially successful, but there’s only one metric that matters: are they scary? The Book of Horror focuses on the most frightening films of the post-war era—from Psycho (1960) to It Chapter Two (2019)—examining exactly how they scare us across a series of key categories. Each chapter explores a seminal horror film in depth, charting its scariest moments with infographics and identifying the related works you need to see. Including references to more than one hundred classic and contemporary horror films from around the globe, and striking illustrations from Barney Bodoano, this is a rich and compelling guide to the scariest films ever made. “This is the definitive guide to what properly messes us up.” —SFX Magazine The films: Psycho (1960), The Innocents (1961), The Haunting (1963), Don’t Look Now (1973), The Exorcist (1973), The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974), Who Can Kill a Child? Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The tales within "Alone in the Echo: A Journey Within" are not just stories; they are testaments to the strength and resilience of the female spirit. In a world that often demands women to be resilient, these stories celebrate the unyielding courage of women who face their solitude head-on. These characters are not damsels in distress waiting for rescue; they are architects of their destinies, finding solace, companionship, and even joy within the confines of their solitude. Through the prism of these narratives, readers will witness the transformation of solitude from a burden to a source of empowerment. The women in these stories draw upon their internal reservoirs of strength, confront their fears, and emerge as heroines of their lives. In the face of adversity, they redefine their identities, proving that solitude, far from being a weakness, can be a catalyst for profound personal growth.

Book excerpt: Over the past 25 years, the American-born, Nuremberg-based painter and musician Dan Reeder (born 1954) has amassed some 1,000 paintings, watercolors, posters, drawings and prints humorously (and sometimes satirically) depicting the follies of twenty-first-century humankind. Operating on the motto "I paint what I am thinking," Reeder pokes gentle fun at all walks of life, and all the foibles of mankind--from a portrait of an academic being led into an arid landscape by a walking cerebellum (title: "Mister Brain leads another Doktor Professor into the desert where nothing can live") to numerous images satirizing art, the art world and art history. As many of these works attest, Reeder is also not afraid to laugh at himself (see his "Self Portrait as a Shaved Goat on a Short Rope"). Reeder's deliberately awkward paintings, which occupy a deliberately awkward place in the art world, are both modest and scornful, melancholic and euphoric. This volume offers a first overview of his work, which fans of David Shrigley will particularly enjoy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Erasmus' Familiar Colloquies grew from a small collection of phrases, sentences, and snatches of dialogue written in Paris about 1497 to help his private pupils improve their command of Latin. Twenty years later the material was published by Johann Froben (Basel 1518). It was an immediate success and was reprinted thirty times in the next four years. For the edition of March 1522 Erasmus began to add fully developed dialogues, and a book designed to improve boys' use of Latin (and their deportment) soon became a work of literature for adults, although it retained traces of its original purposes. The final Froben edition (March, 1533) had about sixty parts, most of them dialogues. It was in the last form that the Colloquies were read and enjoyed for four centuries. For modern readers it is one of the best introductions to European society of the Renaissance and Reformation periods, with lively descriptions of daily life and provocative discussions of political, religious, social, and literary topics, presented with Erasmus's characteristic wit and verve. Each colloquy has its own introduction and full explanatory, historical, and biographical notes. Volumes 39 and 40 of the Collected Works of Erasmus series - Two-volume set.

Book excerpt: Max Frei has discovered that the one place he really fits in is the parallel world of Echo. In our world he's a loser, an insomniac with dubious social skills and an addiction to cigarettes. But in Echo, the reality is far stranger. There he is Sir Max, a superb magician and one of the powerful few chosen to defend the land against all possible enemies. And he's finally happy. But when one of his esteemed Knight colleagues tells Max of a strange dream - one that seems disturbingly familiar to Max - Max realises he will have to investigate. The subsequent series of events will remind our hero - and the people he protects - just how tenuous happiness can be. It could be his most dangerous mission yet, but The Stranger's Magic may win him through.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the king of “Gonzo” journalism and bestselling author who brought you Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas comes another astonishing volume of letters by Hunter S. Thompson. Brazen, incisive, and outrageous as ever, this second volume of Thompson’s private correspondence is the highly anticipated follow-up to The Proud Highway. When that first book of letters appeared in 1997, Time pronounced it "deliriously entertaining"; Rolling Stone called it "brilliant beyond description"; and The New York Times celebrated its "wicked humor and bracing political conviction." Spanning the years between 1968 and 1976, these never-before-published letters show Thompson building his legend: running for sheriff in Aspen, Colorado; creating the seminal road book Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas; twisting political reporting to new heights for Rolling Stone; and making sense of it all in the landmark Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail '72. To read Thompson's dispatches from these years—addressed to the author's friends, enemies, editors, and creditors, and such notables as Jimmy Carter, Tom Wolfe, and Kurt Vonnegut—is to read a raw, revolutionary eyewitness account of one of the most exciting and pivotal eras in American history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Echo and Narcissus: Echolocating the Spectator in the Age of Audience Research came about as a response to the recent shift of focus in the studies of cinema. While the seventies and the eighties were marked by increasingly complex theorisations of spectatorship, the last two decades have witnessed a turn towards ethnographic research into film reception. However, this long overdue turn towards the empirical viewer has not produced a genuinely broader scope of analysis. It has rather, all too hastily, consigned the spectator, a textually constructed viewing position, to oblivion, thanks to the concept’s perceived hegemonic and totalising premise. Echo and Narcissus intervenes into this state of affairs by arguing for a productive nexus between theorisations of spectatorship and the currently more fashionable audience research. Petek maintains that an informed mapping of contemporary (and past) filmviewing practices still requires a spectatorial model and she offers such a model through a re-reading of Ovid’s tale of Echo and Narcissus. She demonstrates that the myth’s central role in traditional theorisations of spectatorship has not yet been properly reflected upon. Her critical recuperation of the Ovidian myth provides a revised model of the spectator—one with discursive access to all types of cinema, yet, flexible enough to accommodate a range of viewers’ responses and their cultural diversity.

Book excerpt: Newbery Honor Book New York Times Bestseller This impassioned, uplifting, and virtuosic tour de force from a treasured storyteller follows three children, in three different times and places, whose lives mysteriously intersect. Lost and alone in a forbidden forest, Otto meets three mysterious sisters and suddenly finds himself entwined in a puzzling quest involving a prophecy, a promise, and a harmonica. Decades later, Friedrich in Germany, Mike in Pennsylvania, and Ivy in California each, in turn, become interwoven when the very same harmonica lands in their lives. All the children face daunting challenges: rescuing a father, protecting a brother, holding a family together. And ultimately, pulled by the invisible thread of destiny, their suspenseful solo stories converge in an orchestral crescendo. Richly imagined and masterfully crafted, Echo pushes the boundaries of genre, form, and storytelling innovation to create a wholly original novel that will resound in your heart long after the last note has been struck.
