Book excerpt: The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars. The Age of Enlightenment profoundly enriched religious and philosophical understanding and continues to influence present-day thinking. Works collected here include masterpieces by David Hume, Immanuel Kant, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau, as well as religious sermons and moral debates on the issues of the day, such as the slave trade. The Age of Reason saw conflict between Protestantism and Catholicism transformed into one between faith and logic -- a debate that continues in the twenty-first century. ++++ The below data was compiled from various identification fields in the bibliographic record of this title. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ecclesiastical Memorials, Vol. 1: Relating Chiefly to Religion, and the Reformation of It, and the Emergencies of the Church of England, Under King Henry VIII. King Edward Vi and Queen Mary I., With Large Appendixes, Containing Original Papers, Records, Etc.; Part I These Memorials, respecting chiefly religion, and the reformation of it in this kingdom in former times, the author had composed and fitted for the press divers years ago; but thought fit to lay them aside for a time, and to begin rather with what he had writ of the Lives and Acts of the four first Protestant Archbishops of Canterbury; as shewing therein the beginning, progress, opposition, and establishment Of the said happy Reformation, in a continued history, under the influence of those most worthy confessors and prelates. Nor did he think it convenient to burden those books, which were large enough of themselves, by inserting those memorials into them, which would have rendered them too bulky, and less saleable: but rather chose to compile them into other volumes by themselves, in due time to follow the rest, in order to the rendering more complete the former published histories. This gave occasion to their being sup pressed hitherto. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: This book presents the documentation of all known recorded capital trials within the Tudor dynasty, each encapsulating the drama and intrigue of real history as Tudor law evolved from following the monarch’s will to following clearly-established law. While capital punishment was common, several individuals accused of treason skillfully and successfully defended themselves. The names of many of the subjects will be familiar to those who are interested in Tudor history, as they were prominent enough to be mentioned in books about the rulers they served. Biographies have been published about some of these individuals, including the events that led up to their trials, but all too often the trials themselves have been left out or have been included only by way of a few excerpts, so that this volume is the first to include as many as presented here. Some books about the period include the word ‘Trial of’ was in the title, but still only short excerpts of the actual trial are included. Other books on Tudor personalities are more about entertainment than factual history, enhanced by embellishing a few facts and rather skillfully weaving them into a great story that totally excludes the trials. The inducement to put together this book is two-fold. First, it is my opinion that the trials are an integral part of the individual’s biographical story and of history; secondly, some readers of my past publications have asked for a book just about the trials of those best known to readers interested in English Tudor history. The trials included in this edition are accumulated from many sources. Only a very few have been left out because actual trial records were not found, only a conglomeration of notes from many sources that give the reader a basic account of the legal proceeding. During the reign of Elizabeth I, record keeping and trial transcripts became more frequent and regular.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For too long, King Edward VI has been pushed to the very edges of Tudor history - overlooked in favor of some of the more vibrant personalities of his family members, such as Henry VIII and Elizabeth I. Known as the 'boy king' of the Tudor dynasty, he is often remembered for little more than the ambitious councillors who governed England during his minority. His reign, however, and the significant religious changes that took place as he furthered the Protestant Reformation in England, had great influence over the remaining decades of the Tudor period and even modern Britain as we know it today. ‘Boy king’ though he may have been, Edward VI and his government were more significant to the history of England than he is often given credit for, and it is long past time for careful and thoughtful study of his life and reign. Edward VI: Henry VIII’s Overshadowed Son aims to reopen the pages of his story, arguing that however brief it may have been, Edward VI’s reign had lasting impacts on the religious landscape in England, and is certainly a Tudor reign worth remembering.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: England July 1540: it is one of the hottest summers on record and the court of Henry VIII is embroiled, once again, in political scandal. Anne Cleves is out. Thomas Cromwell is to be executed and, in the countryside, an aristocratic teenager named Catherine Howard prepares to become fifth wife to the increasingly unpredictable monarch... In the five centuries since her death, Catherine Howard has been dismissed as 'a wanton', 'inconsequential' or a naive victim of her ambitious family, but the story of her rise and fall offers not only a terrifying and compelling story of an attractive, vivacious young woman thrown onto the shores of history thanks to a king's infatuation, but an intense portrait of Tudor monarchy in microcosm: how royal favour was won, granted, exercised, displayed, celebrated and, at last, betrayed and lost. The story of Catherine Howard is both a very dark fairy tale and a gripping political scandal.
