Book excerpt: This book offers a description of current and recently developed laboratory assays in the field of haemostasis and thrombosis. It is the result of a unique cooperation between experts from more than 60 institutes in 12 European countries, brought together by the ECA T (European Concerted Action on Thrombosis and Disabilities) under the auspices of the Commission of the European Communities in Brussels, Belgium. The ECAT, which was initiated in 1981, designed and performed three prospective clinical studies to establish haemostatic factors as risk indicators of thrombosis. Included were patients with angina pectoris at risk from myocardial infarction, patients undergoing angioplasty at risk from re-stenosis, and patients receiving hip replacement at risk from deep venous thrombosis. Assay procedures were chosen, training courses for technicians held, and essential reagents were supplied from a central source. A quality control assessment scheme served to compare assay results both within and between laboratories. In the angina pectoris study, centres determined most of the assays locally; in the other two studies assays were performed centrally. The need for further quality assessment in Europe Dr J. F. Davidson in Glasgow, led to a separate activity coordinated by including coagulation inhibitors and plasminogen as risk factors for familial venous thrombosis. The Editors hope the ECA T Assay Procedures book will contribute to further harmonization ofhaemostasis assays, and ultimately to their standardization.

This book was released on 2013-12-01 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first edition of this manual appeared in 1992 and was entitled ECAT Assay Procedures. It was the result of a unique cooperation between experts brought together by the European Concerted Action on Thrombosis and Disabilities (ECAT). The Concerted Action was at that time under the auspices of the Commission of the European Union. The second edition, like the first edition, deals with diagnostic tests within the field of thrombosis. However, the second edition has a broader scope because it is no longer limited by the frontiers of ECAT. Experts allover the world, in and outside ECAT, have contributed to this edition. The editors are very grateful for their contributions. The need for a new edition is obvious. Since 1992 new assays have been introduced for research, diagnosis, and therapy of thrombosis; for other assays improvements have been suggested, while a few others became redundant. The editors waived the radioimmunoassays of ~-thrombog1obulin and platelet factor 4 due to the fact that the kits required for these assays are rarely, or no longer, available. Also the PAI-1 activity assay was waived as it is liable to many inconsistencies and to large variations. A list of names and addresses of manufacturers marketing the kits and reagents has been compiled, together with a list of the recommended nomenclature of quantities in thrombosis and haemostasis, in order to facilitate the use of the updated version. These lists have been carefully compiled by Johannes J. Sidelmann, PhD, Department of Clinical Biochemistry in Esbjerg, Denmark.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Over the last decades, major progress has been made in quality assurance of hemostatic laboratory assays. This book will be an indispensable part of every hemostasis laboratory, where, given its hands-on nature, it will rarely sit to get dusty on the shelves." —Frits R. Rosendaal, Leiden University Medical Center The hemostasis laboratory has a vital role in the diagnosis and management of patients with familial and acquired hemorrhagic and thrombotic disorders. Its role in the monitoring traditional anticoagulant therapy as well as therapy using new anticoagulants presents new challenges to the laboratory. Quality in Laboratory Hemostasis and Thrombosis not only addresses these important issues, but also covers international guidelines for testing, the development of international standard materials, management of hemostasis testing from the laboratory to the point of care as well as molecular genetic testing. Designed as a guide for all those working in hemostasis laboratories, this book details a quality program that, when put into place, will help to improve standards in testing. All of the authors are internationally recognised for their work in hemostasis and thrombosis. Using their experience, they provide information on standards, equipment and methods that will guide the development of a quality program to support all activities in the hemostasis laboratory.

Book excerpt: The first edition of this manual appeared in 1992 and was entitled ECAT Assay Procedures. This completely revised new edition combines the strengths of the first edition with new and useful features. Laboratory Techniques in Thrombosis - a Manual still gives detailed descriptions of the recommended assays and their alternatives. However, the manual now has a broader scope because it is no longer limited by the frontiers of ECAT. Experts all over the world have contributed to this edition. Furthermore, new assays have been introduced, improvements have been suggested for other assays, while a few others have become redundant or no longer available. The list of manufacturers is fully updated and a list of the recommended nomenclature of quantities in thrombosis and haemostasis is new to this edition, further facilitating the use of this manual. Laboratory Techniques in Thrombosis - a Manual will contribute to furthering the much needed harmonization and standardization of tests within the field and should have a place in all working haemostasis laboratories.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Make sure you are thoroughly prepared to work in a clinical laboratory. Rodak's Hematology: Clinical Principles and Applications, 7th Edition uses hundreds of full-color photomicrographs to help you understand the essentials of hematology and hemostasis. This new edition details the parts and functions of the cell; shows how to accurately identify cells; covers normal hematopoiesis through diseases of erythroid, myeloid, lymphoid, and megakaryocytic origins; and simplifies hemostasis and thrombosis concepts and disorders. Easy to follow and understand, this book also covers key topics, including working in the hematology and hemostasis laboratory; complementary testing areas such as flow cytometry, cytogenetics, and molecular diagnostics; and laboratory testing of blood cells and body fluid cells. Over 700 full-color illustrations and photomicrographs make it easier for students to visualize hematology concepts and show what they'll encounter in the lab, with images appearing near their mentions in the text to minimize flipping pages back and forth. Content throughout text reflects latest information on hematology. Instructions for lab procedures include sources of possible errors along with comments. Hematology instruments are described, compared, and contrasted. Case studies in each chapter provide opportunities to apply hematology concepts to real-life scenarios. Hematology/hemostasis reference ranges are listed on the inside front and back covers for quick reference. A bulleted summary makes it easy for students to review the important points in every chapter. Learning objectives begin each chapter and indicate what students should achieve, with review questions appearing at the end. - NEW! Chapter on Patient Safety in Hematology and Hemostasis. - NEW! Section on hematology and hemostasis in transgender populations. - UPDATED! White blood cell chapters are current with the 2022 World Health Organization (WHO) Classification of Haematolymphoid Tumours. - NEW! Changes in laboratory results associated with COVID-19 and other viral infections. - NEW! Content and figures on plasma transport, cell communication, and signal transduction. - NEW! Coverage of CRISPR technology for treatment of hemoglobinopathies and thalassemia. - UPDATED! Major revision of the Automated Blood Cell Analysis chapter.
