Book Synopsis Faces of Perfect Ebony by : Catherine Molineux
Download or read book Faces of Perfect Ebony written by Catherine Molineux and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2012-01-02 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though blacks were not often seen on the streets of seventeenth-century London, they were already capturing the British imagination. For two hundred years, as Britain shipped over three million Africans to the New World, popular images of blacks as slaves and servants proliferated in London art, both highbrow and low. Catherine Molineux assembles a surprising array of sources in her exploration of this emerging black presence, from shop signs, tea trays, trading cards, board games, playing cards, and song ballads to more familiar objects such as William Hogarth's graphic satires. By idealizing black servitude and obscuring the brutalities of slavery, these images of black people became symbols of empire to a general populace that had little contact with the realities of slave life in the distant Americas and Caribbean. The earliest images advertised the opulence of the British Empire by depicting black slaves and servants as minor, exotic characters who gazed adoringly at their masters. Later images showed Britons and Africans in friendly gatherings, smoking tobacco together, for example. By 1807, when Britain abolished the slave trade and thousands of people of African descent were living in London as free men and women, depictions of black laborers in local coffee houses, taverns, or kitchens took center stage. Molineux's well-crafted account provides rich evidence for the role that human traffic played in the popular consciousness and culture of Britain during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries and deepens our understanding of how Britons imagined their burgeoning empire.

Download or read book Silent Ebony written by Jesse Yaw and published by Europa Edizioni. This book was released on 2024-02-28 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Silent Ebony explores Jesse Yaw’s most intimate, profound, and heartfelt collections of poetry and prose, which unravels and probes the most intricate and complex aspects of human nature, such as love, rejection, pain, trauma, faith, abuse, identity, war, relationships, family ties and pathology. It also explores racial injustice, trauma, using a myriad of carefully woven tactile and visual imagery, using personification as a means to allow readers to draw close to his mind, heart, spirit, and soul. Jesse’s poetry collection fearlessly addresses current political issues such as black political identity, the violation of black female pathology, and the struggle for freedom and racial equality. The collection of poetry serves as a sacred text, which provides healing, community, and an outpouring for the pure and unashamed voices of those who are marginalised, and those who seek rejuvenation. Providing a formidable social commentary on the state of modern society in the global village and life. Jesse Yaw is a Ghanaian intellectual, writer, poet, investor, political and economic theorist, and Businessman. He previously released his debut novel, The Deconstruction of Humanity’s Voice, But We Are Still Standing, which has been widely acclaimed and internationally recognised, and catalogued in the Schomburg Centre for Research in Black Culture in the United States of America, as well as the Black Cultural Archives in the United Kingdom. He is a racial equality activist and philanthropist, an advocate for global peace, social reform, and justice. Jesse was born in the United Kingdom, his heritage sewn into the fabric of the Royal Ashanti tribe of the Akan people.

Book excerpt: Neuroplasticity is the new paradigm of how the human brain changes itself when provided with specific signals, through the senses, that can be activated by technology increasing the brain’s thinking capability. It sounds nice in theory, but what if this technology is abused. Major John Tilbury is an ex-SAS commando who served in Afghanistan and Iraq and now counsels veterans. He is faced with the moral dilemma of neuroplasticity being used by an unscrupulous organization called OASIS for monetary gain. His main helper in the fight against covert operatives is Thomas Black, a trained assassin and friend to Tilbury. The battle they fight is one of gargantuan proportions as they go head-to-head with the CIA and Pentagon. Tilbury is caught between acting as a killing machine or supporting neuroplasticity’s positive outcomes when used with the right intentions. In this case, innocent people are in the clutches of OASIS and their dark deeds, but Tilbury’s investigation is further complicated by a sexy detective. In this world of espionage and treason, can cognitive abilities be enhanced to make a better world? Or will greed and need for power turn this experiment into nothing but a failure that ruins lives?
