Book excerpt: “An important reminder of simple everyday practices to improve how we all work together, which will lead to greater team and individual happiness and performance. Great results will follow.”—Jack Dorsey, CEO of Twitter and Square “With just 30 changes, you can transform your work experience from bland and boring (or worse) to fulfilling, fun, and even joyful.”—Daniel Pink, author of When and Drive The vice president of Twitter Europe and host of the top business podcast Eat Sleep Work Repeat offers thirty smart, research-based hacks for bringing joy and fun back into our burned out, uninspired work lives. How does a lunch break spark a burst of productivity? Can a team’s performance be improved simply by moving the location of the coffee maker? Why are meetings so often a waste of time, and how can a walking meeting actually get decisions made? As an executive with decades of management experience at top Silicon Valley companies including YouTube, Google, and Twitter, Bruce Daisley has given a lot of thought to what makes a workforce productive and what factors can improve the workplace to benefit a company’s employees, customers, and bottom line. In his debut book, he shares what he’s discovered, offering practical, often counterintuitive, insights and solutions for reinvigorating work to give us more meaning, productivity, and joy at the office. A Gallup survey of global workers revealed shocking news: only 13% of employees are engaged in their jobs. This means that burn out and unhappiness at work are a reality for the vast majority of workers. Managers—and employees themselves—can make work better. Eat Sleep Work Repeat shows them how, offering more than two dozen research-backed, user-friendly strategies, including: Go to Lunch (it makes you less tired over the weekend) Suggest a Tea Break (it increases team cohesiveness and productivity) Conduct a Pre-Mortem (foreseeing possible issues can prevent problems and creates a spirit of curiosity and inquisitiveness) “Let’s start enjoying our jobs again,” Daisley insists. “It’s time to rediscover the joy of work.”

Book excerpt: This book describes my life and experiences as a Fly In Fly Out (FIFO) worker in the oil and gas industry, from trainee to fifteen-year veteran. My career - so far - has included stints on four offshore facilities and one major onshore LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) project. I currently work on the World's largest floating object which I helped build in South Korea over a three year period. These experiences have been unique in many ways, but are conveyed in a very human way; I was not interested in writing a technical book, a history of the industry, or an environmental tome of monumental importance. This is just a story of my life as a FIFO worker during one of the busiest and most interesting times in the industry, particularly Australia. For example, my current facility was the first floating LNG plant ever designed, and is a game changer for the industry, but the process is described in laymen's terms, easy to understand. We have also seen major upheaval caused by the Covid-19 pandemic; border restrictions, enforced separation and isolation, falls in oil prices and increased Unionism. In short, this is a description of a unique way of working and living. It involves a cast of hundreds of characters, places and events, most of them amusing, some of them sad or possibly even exciting, a lot of them are things that are small in their own way but have never been presented in a book, with the possible exception of "Don't Tell Mum I Work on the Rigs, She Thinks I'm a Piano Player in a Whorehouse ". It is what we do on a day-to-day basis when we are at work, and I believe that a large amount of "normal" people are very interested in this lifestyle, apart from the 150,000 plus FIFO workers based in Australia, Canada and elsewhere. It also openly and honestly describes my descent into depression, sometimes so bad I wanted to suicide. FIFO can be hard. FIFO is a different life altogether, it comes with its own issues and problems, from distances travelled, the method of getting there, fatigue, dangerous conditions, depression, anxiety, separation from family and The World, huge relationship hurdles, as well as the concept of being trapped by the lifestyle and the large salaries, the Golden Handcuffs as we call it. In fact, this book is a study of Australian working culture in many ways with all its blemishes. The lifestyle is not for everyone, especially offshore, and many people have crashed and burned in the time I have been in the job. We do a minimum of 12 hour days, 7 days a week, up to 28 days straight, sometimes longer when storms hit or choppers fail. At the same time a lot of us get paid well and we get decent breaks where we spend that money we earn. And we work with some of the best people on the planet, even if the Companies and their management structures leave a lot to be desired. I hope you enjoy it and find it interesting.

Book excerpt: Work. Eat. Sleep. Repeat. Work. Eat. Sleep. Repeat. Work. Eat. Sleep. Repeat. Have you ever sat at your desk and asked yourself, why am I here? Is this really all there is? Believe me, it isn't. Over the past three decades, my generation created the enormous machines we call multinational corporations. Today, over half of the largest economies in the world are global businesses - controlled by the few, while impacting the many. Business has the power to change the world. But what if we, as individuals, had the power to change the world of business? We are in the age of the intrapreneur: where mavericks and rebels bring their entrepreneurial prowess to big business, to change it from the inside out and bottom up. The Intrapreneur is the story of my dream to do exactly that and how you can too. For over a decade, I led a team within one of the world’s largest global consulting organisations – a corporate “guerrilla movement” working deep within the system, to try to change the system. Our goals were huge: we wanted to revolutionise the role of business in the aid and development sector and offer our skills and expertise to not-for-profits in parts of the world with greatest need, but least access. This was my dream but, until now, I have never admitted the personal toll that it took on me. It ultimately cost me my job, my health and perhaps even my sanity as I landed myself in a psychiatric hospital for five days and five nights. I had found my purpose, but had I lost my mind? The Intrapreneur is a call to action for a new breed of social activist working within, about to join or completely disillusioned by today’s business world - to be the change you want to see in your company. So my message is a simple one. If you feel that description applies to you, either change company or better still, change the company you’re in – for the better. If we strive to create the organisations we desire to work in, which build the societies we want to live in, then we’ll be helping not only ourselves and our colleagues, but the world as a whole. Join us today.

Cohen’s first year as a father, this book is the only one to combine two invaluable “on the job” perspectives—the doctor’s and the new parent’s. The result is a refreshingly engaging and informative guide that includes all you need to know at each age and stage of your child’s first year. Drawing on the latest medical recommendations and his experiences at home and in the office, Dr. Cohen covers everything from preparing for your baby’s arrival to introducing her to a new sibling, to those three basic functions that will come to dominate a new parent’s life. Eat, Sleep, Poop addresses questions, strategies, myths, and all aspects of your child’s development. In each instance, Dr. Cohen provides a thorough overview and a simple answer or explanation: a “common sense bottom line,” yet he doesn’t dictate. The emphasis is on doing what is medically sound and what works best for you and your baby. He also includes fact sheets, easy-to-follow diagnosis and treatment guides, and humorous daddy vs. doctor sidebars that reveal the learning curve during his fi rst year as a dad. Lively, practical, and reassuring, Eat, Sleep, Poop provides the knowledge you need to parent with confidence, to relax and enjoy baby’s fi rst year, and to raise your child with the best tool a parent can have: informed common sense.

This book was released on 2013-09-17 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "One thing I have learned in my years of leading teams is that achieving a remarkable performance is no guarantee of repeating remarkable performance." As a program director with IBM Leadership Development, Perry Holley has traveled the globe to improve personal and team performance in his company. He has seen first-hand how IBM has managed to stay on top during good times and bad throughout its century-long history. It all comes down to leadership that never accepts average, views challenges as opportunities, and always strives to make a difference. Repeat the Remarkable is Holley's toolbox for organizational leadership that drives remarkable performance--and keeps it running full throttle. The ability to repeat top-notch performance is precisely the difference between good companies and great companies. In this groundbreaking book, Holley reveals the same method he teaches IBM's leaders. He conveniently organizes his proven "Model for Remarkable" into three easy-to-understand sections: FOUNDATION: The two main building blocks of remarkable performance--clear definitions of goals and the purposes behind the goals FRAMEWORK: The four critical elements for delivering remarkable performance--exceptional behavior, preparation, discipline, and persistence FUNCTIONALITY: The two components that ensure that remarkability is the defining trait of your company or department--a mindset of excellence and high character The lessons in Repeat the Remarkable can be applied to any organization, whether it's a large corporation, a small business--or simply your own family unit. They are universal--and they work. In today's hypercompetitive business landscape, where markets are completely unpredictable, being good doesn't cut it. Neither does delivering occasional remarkable performance. If you want to seize the competitive edge--and hold it--you have to deliver world-class performance on a consistent basis. With Repeat the Remarkable, you have everything you need to infuse the right attitudes and behaviors in your people--and make sure they stick. Praise for REPEAT THE REMARKABLE: "One of the demons that overcomes individuals and organizations is complacency. This book contains the perfect antidote. Holley uses his IBM experience as a powerful metaphor for the value of discipline that ultimately inspires individuals and teams to soar to new heights." -- JACK ZENGER, coauthor of the bestselling The Extraordinary Leader and The Inspiring Leader "Perry is a natural teacher. You walk away from each chapter with renewed enthusiasm for personal improvement change." -- JON PRIAL, IBM WW Vice President, Sales Enablement, retired "It is easy to fall into the trap of complacency after the big win. Perry lays out a plan to help you avoid that trap and become intentional about higher performance." -- T. FALCON NAPIER, founder, The Institute for Productive Tension "Perry is Remarkable. Thirty years of remarkable success is proof. If you too want to be remarkable and lead a remarkable team producing remarkable results--buy, read, and study this book. It's all in there." -- DARREN HARDY, publisher of SUCCESS, CEO mentor, and New York Times bestselling author of The Compound Effect "Repeat the Remarkable is full of great ideas to help you lead yourself and lead your team to greater heights." -- MIKE MADSEN, Vice President, IBM Software Group, Mid-Atlantic "Eminently practical and full of real-world advice. This book will affirm and inffluence those who are called to a leadership role. . . . [It] offers meaningful help for everyone at every rung of the leadership ladder." -- ANNE BRUCE, “The Authority on Motivational Leadership” and author of Discover True North and The Manager's Guide to Motivating Employees

With authoritative up-to-date research and real-world advice on the myriad obstacles facing moms, dads, and caregivers, Dr. Diamond unpacks the whys behind the facts to empower your best parental instincts. "Parenting can be nerve-racking, even for the parents who feel prepared and "ready." The truth is, no one is completely ready or knows the answers to every potential problem or situation that arises in a child's life…. Parent Like a Pediatrician has the capability to put a pregnant or new mom at ease." —Portland Book Review

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: AN INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER "Provocative and appealing . . . well worth your extremely limited time." —Barbara Spindel, The Wall Street Journal The average human lifespan is absurdly, insultingly brief. Assuming you live to be eighty, you have just over four thousand weeks. Nobody needs telling there isn’t enough time. We’re obsessed with our lengthening to-do lists, our overfilled inboxes, work-life balance, and the ceaseless battle against distraction; and we’re deluged with advice on becoming more productive and efficient, and “life hacks” to optimize our days. But such techniques often end up making things worse. The sense of anxious hurry grows more intense, and still the most meaningful parts of life seem to lie just beyond the horizon. Still, we rarely make the connection between our daily struggles with time and the ultimate time management problem: the challenge of how best to use our four thousand weeks. Drawing on the insights of both ancient and contemporary philosophers, psychologists, and spiritual teachers, Oliver Burkeman delivers an entertaining, humorous, practical, and ultimately profound guide to time and time management. Rejecting the futile modern fixation on “getting everything done,” Four Thousand Weeks introduces readers to tools for constructing a meaningful life by embracing finitude, showing how many of the unhelpful ways we’ve come to think about time aren’t inescapable, unchanging truths, but choices we’ve made as individuals and as a society—and that we could do things differently.
