After many solicitations, the authors of this little volume undertook the task of preparing the book now Offered to the public. It has been made with two principal facts in view. First That most of the Chinese who will use it are not mere children. But are lads and young men from ten to twenty-five years Of age, and many will use it who are much Older. What they need, therefore, is a book which shall carry them through all the steps of learning, beginning with the alphabet; while at the same time the subjects of the lessens ought to be of a graver character than the simple stories prepared for little children. The lessons are graded as slowly, as the limited space, and introduction of as many new words as possible would allow. The lessons are on a vai'iety oof sabj-cots and include a great mangfiissn'tenncs.511§ed conversation. Gospel truths have been' introduced as far as practicable. The Chinese portion is in the Canton dialect, which is the spoken language of the Chinese in America, Australia, and the Sandwich Islands. The object of using this dialect, instead of the more elegant style of their language, is to give the learner the meaning of the English in plain and simple words, such as he himself would use in expressing the same thing. Book excerpt: Using Chinese Classics for Intercultural Communicative Competence presents new strategies and tools for integrating Mandarin language teaching with fostering intercultural competencies through contemporary, global lenses on Chinese classic texts. Chinese classic texts are canonical works in Chinese culture published before 1911. They offer a window into deeply held cultural values which learners of the Chinese language would benefit from studying to facilitate meaningful intercultural dialogues. With chapters covering classic Chinese texts, such as Journey to the West, Dream of the Red Chamber, and The Romance of the Three Kingdoms, this book will demonstrate the value, importance, and feasibility of teaching Chinese classic works for ICC development in the Chinese world language classroom, and equip teachers with carefully planned, classroom-tested lesson models that demonstrate the innovative, integrative models advocated in this book. This book will be valuable for pre- and in-service Mandarin Chinese teachers across various institutional settings at different levels, looking for ready materials and professional development resources. The book can also be used as core material for teacher training programs.

The Chinese, unable to read their own characters, can, within a fortni ht, learn to read the romanized Chinese, whilst those able to read and nu er stand their own ideographic characters will find much assistance from the same as found at the end of each section. The foreign teacher will, in this manner, learn whilst teaching and will find his mind much relieved when he has to appear before children who, whilst knowing little them selves, have not always too high an Opinion of their master, particularly when, as I have witnessed myself, circumlocutory phrases are substituted for le, pointed terms, corresponding, as much as possible, to the En But the principal advantage to teachers will be the fact, that means are laced at their dis osal to give their pupils lessons to learn by heart w en at home and us introduce a system of study, which must sooner or later change the Chinese mode of imparting knowledge to their native children. The new terms introduced for the various parts of speech will be found a great improvement on those used by native scholars. The publication of the work in two arts became necessary in order to enable the poorer classes to purchase e work for a trifle just as they need it. As the undersigned may not be able in future to spend much time on the preparation of works of this kind, he shall feel gratified in learn ing that the many natives and foreigners enga ed in teaching are follow ing in the ath thus cleared for them and enab 6 their pupils to acquire the English) language sooner and write it with greater facility than has hitherto, with few exceptions, been the case. Book excerpt: Chinese theologian Kwok Pui-lan draws on a wide variety of archival material to reconstruct the life of Chinese women in the church. She analyzes their participation in social reform, and looks at their relationship to the feminist movement in China. Compared to their Chinese sisters, Christian women had more prolonged exposure to Western civilization through the Christian Church, mission schools, and Christian benevolence. Their responses, shows Kwok, provide rare information on how Chinese women reacted to foreign influences and religion in particular. At the same time, Kwok'sstudy broadens our understanding of how Christianity adapts to and functions in a totally new cultural context.
