Book Synopsis Work and Faith in the Kentucky Coal Fields by : Richard J. Callahan
Download or read book Work and Faith in the Kentucky Coal Fields written by Richard J. Callahan and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2008-11-20 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exploring themes of work and labor in everyday life, Richard J. Callahan, Jr., offers a history of how coal miners and their families lived their religion in eastern Kentucky's coal fields during the early 20th century. Callahan follows coal miners and their families from subsistence farming to industrial coal mining as they draw upon religious idioms to negotiate changing patterns of life and work. He traces innovation and continuity in religious expression that emerged from the specific experiences of coal mining, including the spaces and social structures of coal towns, the working bodies of miners, the anxieties of their families, and the struggle toward organized labor. Building on oral histories, folklore, folksongs, and vernacular forms of spirituality, this rich and engaging narrative recovers a social history of ordinary working people through religion.

This book was released on 2018-02-05 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Preliminary Reports on the South-Eastern Kentucky Coal Field The greater elevation of this mountain barrier, and the ab ruptness of its face, formed by uplifted rocks along an extended line of fracture, appears at first approach more like an inter ruption of the topography of the country by the uplifting of a barrier across it after its hills and valleys had been carved out and its drainage established, than like a part of the general result of the erosion of the whole country after the formation of this fault-ridge. Doubtless there is a considerable margin of fact on the side of this first impression, as will be seen by a comparison with the Cumberland mountain. But the time of the formation of this fault-ridge is probably so little removed, comparatively speaking, from the time of the upheaval of the coal measures as a whole to form a permanent part of the conti nent that it may at least be regarded as a prominent factor in the determination of the drainage before the river systems of to-day were mapped out around it. From the time of the uplift to the present, Pine mountain has not been less prominent as a mountain barrier than it is today. And the drainage of this region has adjusted itself to this prominent feature, making extended detours along the foot of the mountain slope to find outlets to the westward with the general slope of the country. Along the face of the mountain, also, the valleys have fallen into line with the fault, as in the instance of Elkhorn Creek, of the Kentucky River above Whites burg, and of the hwds of the streams in the southwestern part of Letcher county, the same parallelism continues along the whole face. Away to the westward and north the drainage con forms in general to the slight inclinations of the rocks of the coal measures, which illustrate by varying dips, some of the minor movements attending mountain-making. Book Synopsis The Economics of Kentucky Coal by : Curtis E. Harvey
Download or read book The Economics of Kentucky Coal written by Curtis E. Harvey and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2021-12-14 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The energy problem confronting the United States has focused attention on Kentucky's coal. Mr. Harvey here presents a comprehensive analysis of the coal industry in Kentucky, which consistently produces more than a fifth of the nation's coal. Because the coal industries in eastern and western Kentucky differ in many respects, Mr. Harvey has analyzed them separately. Although faced with competition from the foreign oil market, prospects for eastern Kentucky coal seem favorable because of its high quality and easy access to markets. The future of the coal industry in western Kentucky, Mr. Harvey asserts, depends upon implementation and enforcement of air-pollution standards, pending legislation regulating strip mining, fuel-import prices and policies, foreign currency fluctuations, and other factors. He foresees a moderate growth in the coal industry over the next five to ten years.

Download or read book Twilight in Hazard written by Alan Maimon and published by Melville House. This book was released on 2021-06-08 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Twilight in Hazard paints a more nuanced portrait of Appalachia than Vance did...[Maimon] eviscerates Vance's bestseller with stiletto precision.” —Associated Press From investigative reporter and Pulitzer Prize finalist Alan Maimon comes the story of how a perfect storm of events has had a devastating impact on life in small town Appalachia, and on the soul of a shaken nation . . . When Alan Maimon got the assignment in 2000 to report on life in rural Eastern Kentucky, his editor at the Louisville Courier-Journal told him to cover the region “like a foreign correspondent would.” And indeed, when Maimon arrived in Hazard, Kentucky fresh off a reporting stint for the New York Times’s Berlin bureau, he felt every bit the outsider. He had landed in a place in the vice grip of ecological devastation and a corporate-made opioid epidemic—a place where vote-buying and drug-motivated political assassinations were the order of the day. While reporting on the intense religious allegiances, the bitter, bareknuckled political rivalries, and the faltering attempts to emerge from a century-long coal-based economy, Maimon learns that everything—and nothing—you have heard about the region is true. And far from being a foreign place, it is a region whose generations-long struggles are driven by quintessentially American forces. Resisting the easy cliches, Maimon’s Twilight in Hazard gives us a profound understanding of the region from his years of careful reporting. It is both a powerful chronicle of a young reporter’s immersion in a place, and of his return years later—this time as the husband of a Harlan County coal miner’s daughter—to find the area struggling with its identity and in the thrall of Trumpism as a political ideology. Twilight in Hazard refuses to mythologize Central Appalachia. It is a plea to move past the fixation on coal, and a reminder of the true costs to democracy when the media retreats from places of rural distress. It is an intimate portrait of a people staring down some of the most pernicious forces at work in America today while simultaneously being asked: How could you let this happen to yourselves? Twilight in Hazard instead tells the more riveting, noirish, and sometimes bitingly humorous story of how we all let this happen.
