Book excerpt: Adriatic Pilot is the standard guide to Croatia and the neighbouring countries of Slovenia, Montenegro and Albania which is now celebrating 20 years of publication. It also provides coverage of the eastern coast of Italy and is the only guide to the Venice Lagoon and harbours adjacent to Istria. At present, this is the only book that covers the entire Adriatic region in a single volume. Trevor and Dinah Thompson's thoroughly-researched work provides all the essential navigational information for yachtsmen visiting the area. This 6th edition has been fully revised to include up-to-date technical information and details of new marinas and their facilities. The user-friendly charts included in the introduction to each section are now cross-referenced to the larger scale plans in the text and page referencing is more comprehensive. Each coastal section is now colour-coded and identifiable by colour tabs that improve navigation around the book. This edition of Adriatic Pilot is complemented by Imray's series of charts for the Dalmatian Coast that are also available now.

Book excerpt: Imray has commissioned this English language edition of Skagerrak Forlag's Harbour Guide to Slovenia, Croatia and Montenegro, which covers the coasts of those countries and their islands. The Norwegian publisher has already established a comprehensive series of Harbour Guides (Havneguiden) for the Baltic Sea that concentrate on providing the user with the clearest possible information for entering harbours and anchorages. This joint venture extends the series to the Adriatic. Each harbour is presented on its own page with specially commissioned aerial photos annotated to show approach lines and anchoring places, supported by clear harbour plans, a fact box and sailing directions. Aerial photographs offer a quick overview of the character of the harbour, its atmosphere, facilities and fairways, danger spots and mooring points. Depths, skerries and shallows are clearly marked. Large scale plans, one per harbour, include depths, safest approaches and berthing details. Each harbour text is divided into two sections; a General overview describing the history and scenery of the area and information on what to see and do when there, and a Berthing section with information on how to approach and the hazards to watch out for, and where it is safe and sheltered to tie up. Fact boxes provide a quick overview of the harbour facilities, useful websites and contact details. The book is divided into 5 sailing areas each with a helpful overview chart on which harbours are marked.

This book was released on 2022-09-01 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the world there is evidence of mounting interest in marine resources and new maritime industries to create jobs, economic growth and to help in the provision of energy and food security. Expanding populations, insecurity of traditional sources of supply and the effects of climate change add urgency to a perceived need to address and overcome the serious challenges of working in the maritime environment. Four promising areas of activity for ‘Blue Growth’ have been identified at European Union policy level including Aquaculture; Renewable Energy (offshore wind, wave and tide); Seabed Mining; and Blue Biotechnology. Work has started to raise the technological and investment readiness levels (TRLs and IRLs) of these prospective industries drawing on the experience of established maritime industries such as Offshore Oil and Gas; Shipping; Fisheries and Tourism. An accord has to be struck between policy makers and regulators on the one hand, anxious to direct research and business incentives in effective and efficient directions, and developers, investors and businesses on the other, anxious to reduce the risks of such potentially profitable but innovative investments. The EU H2020 MARIBE (Marine Investment for the Blue Economy) funded project was designed to identify the key technical and non-technical challenges facing maritime industries and to place them into the social and economic context of the coastal and ocean economy. MARIBE went on to examine with companies, real projects for the combination of marine industry sectors into multi-use platforms (MUPs). The purpose of this book is to publish the detailed analysis of each prospective and established maritime business sector. Sector experts working to a common template explain what these industries are, how they work, their prospects to create wealth and employment, and where they currently stand in terms of innovation, trends and their lifecycle. The book goes on to describe progress with the changing regulatory and planning regimes in the European Sea Basins including the Caribbean where there are significant European interests. The book includes:• Experienced chapter authors from a truly multidisciplinary team of sector specialisms• First extensive study to compare and contrast traditional Blue Economy with Blue Growth• Complementary to EU and National policies for multi-use of maritime space

Book excerpt: Armed conflict on the territory of the former Yugoslavia between 1991 and 2001 claimed over 200,000 lives, gave rise to atrocities unseen in Europe since the Second World War, and left behind a terrible legacy of physical ruin and psychological devastation. Unfolding against the background of the end of cold war bipolarity, the new Balkan wars sounded a discordant counterpoint to efforts to construct a more harmonious European order, were a major embarrassment for the international institutions deemed responsible for conflict management, and became a preoccupation for the powers concerned with restoring regional stability. After more than a decade of intermittent hostilities the conflict has been contained, but only as a result of significant external interventions and the establishment of a series of de facto international protectorates, patrolled by UN, NATO, and EU sponsored peacekeepers with open-ended mandates.

This report from the CSIS Europe Program, in partnership with the Bulgarian Center for the Study of Democracy, is the result of a 16-month study on the nature of Russian influence in five case countries: Hungary, Slovakia, Bulgaria, Latvia, and Serbia.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book comprises studies that reflect on various influences of excessive tourism development in protected areas, and solutions designed and initiated to mitigate such challenges. A large proportion of tourism in Mediterranean destinations constitutes nature-based tourism, in particular, tourism in parks and protected areas. As a destination experiences higher intensity and density of tourism, the potential conflict between maintaining a healthy natural environment and economic development also increases. This has urged planners and decision-makers to devise and adopt innovative approaches that seek to strike a balance between tourism development and nature conservation. This book demonstrates the importance of collaboration across and beyond disciplines and of all groups of stakeholders for maximization of societal impacts and tourism-related benefits.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book has been published by Allenvi (French National Alliance for Environmental Research) to coincide with the 22nd Conference of Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP22) in Marrakesh. It is the outcome of work by academic researchers on both sides of the Mediterranean and provides a remarkable scientific review of the mechanisms of climate change and its impacts on the environment, the economy, health and Mediterranean societies. It will also be valuable in developing responses that draw on “scientific evidence” to address the issues of adaptation, resource conservation, solutions and risk prevention. Reflecting the full complexity of the Mediterranean environment, the book is a major scientific contribution to the climate issue, where various scientific considerations converge to break down the boundaries between disciplines.
