Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the political and ideological atmospheres in Central and Eastern Europe have recently changed and entered a transition period, a need has arisen for new models for the formation, development, and establishment of East-West business relationships. East-West Business Relationships is a dynamic work offering a two-dimensional sample--of both the companies and their countries--of East-West Business relations. The book covers topics including joint ventures, relationship marketing, networks, and export behavior. It offers new insights into East-West business relations by: basing its contents upon research conducted by teams from the Unites States, Japan, Sweden, and Finland which allows comparisons between multinationals of different origins. providing a testing ground for new ways of doing business, adjusted to the environments of individual countries. increasing knowledge of critical issues in the business relationship from both the Western and Eastern partner's viewpoint. focusing on the formation and development of East-West business relationships specifically during the transition period. Most chapters in East-West Business Relationships apply a qualitative approach using case study methods. This methodology is unique in the present context of East-West business as it allows an examination of the whole management process of the formation and development of business relationships, providing a rich, in-depth analysis of the why’s and how’s of these relationships. It suggests that more understanding of the experiences, perceptions, and attitudes of East European firms must be gained in order to diminish the problems, a huge number of which are simply a result of the misunderstanding of the Eastern counterpart, faced by Western firms in Eastern Europe. This volume serves as a superior reference for academics and business managers interested in advancing their understanding of East-West business relations. It may also serve as valuable reading material for advanced courses in international marketing or business operations in Eastern Europe.

This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: DENNIS CAMPBELL AND MARK MILLER Introduction Within the last decade, there has been significant expansion in both the frequency and quantity of direct foreign investment by Western countries and multinational 1 corporations (MNC's) in the forni of joint ventures in Eastern Europe. These joint ventures, as well as other forms of mutual-cooperation trade arrangements, represent positive evidence of the increasing enthusiasm towards East-West trans actions now found on both sides of the European frontier. The spirit with which Western governments and business interests have sought to expand involvement in the East European market has been well documented. However, there has been relatively little attention paid to the extremely important internal changes which have come about within the foreign-trade policies of the Eastern European coun tries and which have served to accommodate the growth of trade with the West. This dramatic increase in direct foreign investment in the form of joint ventures results primarily from the passage of enabling legislation in a number of the East European states, legislation which has facilitated and attracted business invest ment from the West. Thus, it is opportune to examine and review the policy reforms and amendments which have been enacted in Eastern Europe and the Western responses thereto. As a preliminary matter, the term 'joint venture', as well as other mechanisms for foreign investment as used here, should be defined and distinguished.

Book excerpt: WHEN in the future historians examine the second half of the twentieth century, they will no doubt identify the accelerated inter-nationalization of production as a landmark comparable with the Industrial Revolution. In this process multinational enterprises have been leading actors in the past twenty-five years and are certain to continue to be so in the next quarter-century. In 1975 the sales of the Western multinational corporations represented one-fifth of the Gross National Product of all capitalist countries. If their growth is maintained at the same rate as over the period 195o-75, by the end of the century this share will be nearly one-half and the whole capitalist economy may very well be dominated by some 200 giant corporations of which three-quarters may be American-based.

This is particularly relevant in analyses of the post-socialist economies of the East, where both governments and enterprises have undergone major structural transformation. This title was first published in 1994, following the Centre for Organisational Studies’ (COS) third Round Table, which discussed East-West business collaboration in relation to the management of organizations. As a result, the edited collection is designed to provide guidance for managers, in the East and West, to the kind of governance issues they might face when working together in the post-Soviet business world. Utilizing a series of case studies, the chapters represent a genuine dialogue between managers, consultants and academics who have worked on both sides of the former ideological divide.
