Book Synopsis Allegheny City by : Daniel M. Rooney
Download or read book Allegheny City written by Daniel M. Rooney and published by University of Pittsburgh Press. This book was released on 2013-06-15 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Allegheny City, known today as Pittsburgh's North Side, was the third-largest city in Pennsylvania when it was controversially annexed by the City of Pittsburgh in 1907. Founded in 1787 as a reserve land tract for Revolutionary War veterans in compensation for their service, it quickly evolved into a thriving urban center with its own character, industry, and accomplished residents. Among those to inhabit the area, which came to be known affectionately as "The Ward," were Andrew Carnegie, Mary Cassatt, Gertrude Stein, Stephen Foster, and Martha Graham. Once a station along the underground railroad, home to the first wire suspension bridge, and host to the first World Series, the North Side is now the site of Heinz Field, PNC Park, the Andy Warhol Museum, the National Aviary, and world headquarters for corporations such as Alcoa and the H. J. Heinz Company. Dan Rooney, longtime North Side resident, joins local historian Carol Peterson in creating this highly engaging history of the cultural, industrial, and architectural achievements of Allegheny City from its humble beginnings until the present day. The authors cover the history of the city from its origins as a simple colonial outpost and agricultural center to its rapid emergence alongside Pittsburgh as one of the most important industrial cities in the world and an engine of the American economy. They explore the life of its people in this journey as they experienced war and peace, economic boom and bust, great poverty and wealth—the challenges and opportunities that fused them into a strong and durable community, ready for whatever the future holds. Supplemented by historic and contemporary photos, the authors take the reader on a fascinating and often surprising street-level tour of this colorful, vibrant, and proud place.
Book Synopsis Shadow Archives by : Jean-Christophe Cloutier
Download or read book Shadow Archives written by Jean-Christophe Cloutier and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2019-09-03 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recasting the history of African American literature, Shadow Archives brings to life a slew of newly discovered texts—including Claude McKay’s Amiable with Big Teeth—to tell the stories of black special collections and their struggle for institutional recognition. Jean-Christophe Cloutier offers revelatory readings of major African American writers, including McKay, Richard Wright, Ann Petry, and Ralph Ellison, and provides a nuanced view of how archival methodology, access, and the power dynamics of acquisitions shape literary history. Shadow Archives argues that the notion of the archive is crucial to our understanding of postwar African American literary history. Cloutier combines his own experiences as a researcher and archivist with a theoretically rich account of the archive to offer a pioneering study of the importance of African American authors’ archival practices and how these shaped their writing. Given the lack of institutions dedicated to the black experience, the novel became an alternative site of historical preservation, a means to ensure both individual legacy and group survival. Such archivism manifests in the work of these authors through evolving lifecycles where documents undergo repurposing, revision, insertion, falsification, transformation, and fictionalization, sometimes across decades. An innovative interdisciplinary consideration of literary papers, Shadow Archives proposes new ways for literary scholars to engage with the archive.
Download or read book Historic Photos of Pittsburgh written by and published by Turner Publishing Company. This book was released on 2008-04-01 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Founded on a triangle of land bounded by two mighty rivers, Pittsburgh has a long and storied chapter in American history. Currently the second-largest city in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Pittsburgh grew from a fur-trading post into Steeltown, U.S.A. Its immense steel factories symbolized America’s new forefront in the Industrial Age, even as the smoke and soot from those factories left the city polluted and filthy. After decades of change, Pittsburgh today is considered one of the most livable cities in America. Historic Photos of Pittsburgh examines the growth and change of this important American city. Nearly 200 photographs spanning two centuries have been collected and captioned with compelling text. Rich in historic detail, filled with images of the past, this book captures the power and might of a great industrial city and is a must-have for both historians and the general reader.

Book Synopsis The House on Henry Street by : Ellen M. Snyder-Grenier
Download or read book The House on Henry Street written by Ellen M. Snyder-Grenier and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2020-06-16 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chronicles the sweeping history of the storied Henry Street Settlement and its enduring vision of a more just society On a cold March day in 1893, 26-year-old nurse Lillian Wald rushed through the poverty-stricken streets of New York’s Lower East Side to a squalid bedroom where a young mother lay dying—abandoned by her doctor because she could not pay his fee. The misery in the room and the walk to reach it inspired Wald to establish Henry Street Settlement, which would become one of the most influential social welfare organizations in American history. Through personal narratives, vivid images, and previously untold stories, Ellen M. Snyder-Grenier chronicles Henry Street’s sweeping history from 1893 to today. From the fights for public health and immigrants’ rights that fueled its founding, to advocating for relief during the Great Depression, all the way to tackling homelessness and AIDS in the 1980s, and into today—Henry Street has been a champion for social justice. Its powerful narrative illuminates larger stories about poverty, and who is “worthy” of help; immigration and migration, and who is welcomed; human rights, and whose voice is heard. For over 125 years, Henry Street Settlement has survived in a changing city and nation because of its ability to change with the times; because of the ingenuity of its guiding principle—that by bridging divides of class, culture, and race we could create a more equitable world; and because of the persistence of poverty, racism, and income disparity that it has pledged to confront. This makes the story of Henry Street as relevant today as it was more than a century ago. The House on Henry Street is not just about the challenges of overcoming hardship, but about the best possibilities of urban life and the hope and ambition it takes to achieve them.
