Meanwhile, events have overtaken him and he is sent to Beer to insinuate himself back into the smuggling fraternity. He is discovered and left to drown in the cellar of the smugglers'' pub. Thomasina rescues him and the speed to Portwrinkle, now Poseidon Bay for a showdown with Lawless. A backdrop of smuggling, plague, food riots and mad people who hinder him at every turn frustrate Aubrey in his quest to clear his name.
