Book excerpt: Return for a fifth time with Pastor Blackstone to the fabled land of India and discover more biblical precepts and life-changing concepts as he travels again with his good friend Shibu Simon to “earth’s farthest bounds.” This time the Maine pastor will speak at three Indian graduations in three days in two different Indian states, witness a baptism in a cattle trough, get up close and personal with a temple elephant that had just blessed a house, and travel through eight Indian states in ten days while journeying the length and breadth of India in a four-thousand-mile odyssey. That odyssey will include visiting the Taj Mahal by water, the Red Fort of Agra, the Golden Temple of the Sikhs, a hostel in Delhi, and the guru caves of Udayagiri. Experience your first cycle rickshaw ride in Amritsar, your first rural hospital in Uttar Pradesh, your fifth Indian train ride through Haryana, and a surprising side-trip to Orissa. These encounters and experiences will cause you to think what is possible if you step out of your comfort zone and journey to “earth’s farthest bounds” on business for the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords—Jesus Christ!

Book excerpt: 'The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.' 'Thy word is a lamp to my feet.' 'Search me, O God, and know my heart!' Such phrases leap to mind whenever Christians lift their hearts to God. For many, in fact, the Psalms are the richest part of the Old Testament. Derek Kidner provides a fresh and penetrating guide to Psalms 1—72. He analyzes each psalm in depth, comments on interpretative questions and brings out the universal relevance of the texts. He also gives special help on the psalmists' cries for vengeance. Together with its companion volume (Psalms 73--150), both of which were formerly part of the Tyndale Old Testament Commentaries series, this introduction and commentary will inspire and deepen personal worship.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Ladies' Greek, Yopie Prins illuminates a culture of female classical literacy that emerged in the second half of the nineteenth century, during the formation of women's colleges on both sides of the Atlantic. Why did Victorian women of letters desire to learn ancient Greek, a "dead" language written in a strange alphabet and no longer spoken? In the words of Elizabeth Barrett Browning, they wrote "some Greek upon the margin—lady's Greek, without the accents." Yet in the margins of classical scholarship they discovered other ways of knowing, and not knowing, Greek. Mediating between professional philology and the popularization of classics, these passionate amateurs became an important medium for classical transmission. Combining archival research on the entry of women into Greek studies in Victorian England and America with a literary interest in their translations of Greek tragedy, Prins demonstrates how women turned to this genre to perform a passion for ancient Greek, full of eros and pathos. She focuses on five tragedies—Agamemnon, Prometheus Bound, Electra, Hippolytus, and The Bacchae—to analyze a wide range of translational practices by women and to explore the ongoing legacy of Ladies' Greek. Key figures in this story include Barrett Browning and Virginia Woolf, Janet Case and Jane Harrison, Edith Hamilton and Eva Palmer, and A. Mary F. Robinson and H.D. The book also features numerous illustrations, including photographs of early performances of Greek tragedy at women's colleges. The first comparative study of Anglo-American Hellenism, Ladies' Greek opens up new perspectives in transatlantic Victorian studies and the study of classical reception, translation, and gender.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This commentary explores some of the most thrilling chapters of the Old Testament. The Israelites' exile is at an end, and in Isaiah 40-55 the prophet calls them to leave Babylon. Chapters 55-66 are about how these people deal with aspects of restored life in Jerusalem, the old political and religious centre, but now so different. Here also are significant passages about a Servant of the Lord, and the challenging call to servanthood on the part of God's people. Michael Thompson examines these chapters both against their original backgrounds and also as scripture for God's people today.

Book excerpt: In his introduction to this beautifully written companion to the Evening Cycle of Psalms (as set out in the Church of England's Book of Common Prayer), Michael Sadgrove reminds us that the Psalms have been central to public worship and personal prayer for the entire history of the church. They are indeed one of the world's greatest spiritual treasures- in the words of Martin Luther, 'full of heartfelt utterances'- and are as vital a source of comfort, challenge and inspiration to people of faith today as they have ever been. I Will Trust in You will greatly benefit anyone who wishes to engage more deeply with the riches of the Psalms.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stars and galaxies, atoms and molecules, all created so to render a divine arena for God to love man and for man to love God. Atoms and molecules of our bodies observe the same physical laws as those stars of the cosmos. Yet divinity rests not with the stars but within each of us whose spirit seeks to touch them. In the twenty-first century, it is now more appropriate to equate gender identity with a spiritual hemisphere (masculine or feminine) than merely biological plumbing (genitalia). I think, too, that the Golden Rule, "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you," falls short of the mark unless the statement applies to animals and plants. Misogyny—the hatred of women. Or more provocatively, is misogyny the hatred of being attracted to women? Evil resides within one's own mind and is pointed toward other people as hate, envy, bigotry, racism, etc. The mind is a wonderful window for the sun to shine in but only works if the shades are open. Men and women participate in the game of sex—the board is the same but men bring checkers and women bring chess pieces! The most marvelous sex organ isn't between the legs, it's between the ears! Let's be clear, worship is not love. Worship is idolatry; love is love. We seek expression, sexual or otherwise, without hindrance to seek and discover self, our unique identity, our inner yearning to reach for infinity left behind yet achingly just ahead. Our souls strive for freedom, and in so doing... "What we commonly call man—the eating, drinking, counting man—does not (as we know him) represent himself. Him we do not respect. But the soul, whose organ he is, would make our knees bend. When it breathes through his intellect it is genius. When it breathes through his will it is virtue. When it flows through his affection it is love" (Walt Whitman).

Book excerpt: This volume of the Navarre Bible commentaries sheds light on the simple beauty of the Psalms and Song of Solomon (Song of Songs). The Catechism teaches that the Psalms, whether hymns or prayers of lamentation or thanksgiving, whether individual or communal, whether royal chants, songs of pilgrimage or wisdom-meditations are a mirror of God's marvelous deeds in the history of his people, as well as reflections of the human experiences of the Psalmist. Even though they often reflect events of the past, the Psalms still possess such direct simplicity and depth that they can be prayed sincerely in all times and conditions. This edition with its illuminating commentary will help make these prayers an important part of your life. This sturdy hardcover contains the complete Latin and English texts of each book; commentary based on the writings of the great saints and doctors of the Church; and material on each book's historical and Biblical context.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Morning and evening prayer for those seeking to respond to Pope Francis’s call for greater care for our common home. “God saw everything that was made, and indeed, it was very good.” Yet human disregard for creation endangers that goodness. In Living Prayer: A Book of Hours for Cultivating Life, authors Alison M. Benders, Lisa Fullam, and Gina Hens-Piazza invite readers to embrace our role as servant-cultivators in the ecology of God, celebrating and sustaining all that is. Following the pattern of the daily prayer of the church, Living Prayer offers a four-week cycle of morning and evening prayer to support a more sustainable lifestyle and embodies an ethic of care for our common home. Created with ecological and social justice-oriented individuals and organizations in mind, Living Prayer supports hands-on work in local communities, empowered by reflection and prayer. The book also includes a variety of green rituals to extend ecological prayer through practices that enlist elements of the reader’s environment to connect to God’s presence in the created world. It is an invitation to live the prayer of our hearts so that the ecology of God flourishes to cultivate the new creation.

Book excerpt: Based on the Revised Common Lectionary (RCL), Feasting on the Word Worship Companion: Liturgies for Year C, Volume 2 is an invaluable aid that provides liturgical pieces needed in preparing for worship each week. Written and compiled by a team of eleven ecumenical and seasoned liturgy writers under the creative leadership of Kimberly Bracken Long, this resource offers a multitude of poetic prayers and responsive readings for all parts of worship and is meant to complement existing denominational resources. In addition, the weekly entries include questions for reflection and household prayers for morning and evening that are drawn from the lectionary, allowing churches to include them in their bulletin for parishioners to use throughout the week. During times of the year when two different tracks of Old Testament texts are offered by the RCL, this resource offers an entire set of materials for each track. Also, a CD-ROM is included with each volume that enables planners to easily cut and paste relevant readings, prayers, and questions into worship bulletins.
