Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Encompassing theory and field experience, this book covers all the main subject areas in earthquake risk reduction, ranging from geology, seismology, structural and soil dynamics to hazard and risk assessment, risk management and planning, engineering and the architectural design of new structures and equipment. Earthquake Risk Reduction outlines individual national weaknesses that contribute to earthquake risk to people and property; calculates the seismic response of soils and structures, using the structural continuum 'Subsoil - Substructure - Superstructure - Non-structure'; evaluates the effectiveness of given designs and construction procedures for reducing casualties and financial losses; provides guidance on the key issue of choice of structural form; presents earthquake resistant designs methods for the four main structural materials - steel, concrete, reinforced masonry and timber - as well as for services equipment, plant and non-structural architectural components; contains a chapter devoted to problems involved in improving (retrofitting) the existing built environment. Compiled from the author's extensive professional experience in earthquake engineering, this key text provides an excellent treatment of the complex multidisciplinary process of earthquake risk reduction. This book will prove an invaluable reference and guiding tool to practicing civil and structural engineers and architects, researchers and postgraduate students in seismology, local governments and risk management officials.

Book excerpt: Until recently experts who studied risks, both natural and technological, focused mainly on how to avoid them. Today, with a growing awareness that certain natural risks are simply unavoidable, the emphasis is shifting toward ways of planning for them and of mitigating their consequences. High on any list of unavoidable natural risks is earthquake. In Planning for Earthquakes Philip R. Berke and Timothy Beatley examine the experiences of 260 earthquake-prone communities across the United States, from the West Coast to the East. They give special attention to three areas of especially high risk--Palo Alto, California; Salt Lake County, Utah; and the lowlands of South Carolina (including historic Charleston). Berke and Beatley address topics that include citizen safety, ways of determining and maintaining the structural integrity of old and new buildings, mapping of quake-prone areas, and land-use (where to limit development). They also study the ways in which planners, politicians, and community residents can best work together in the decision-making process for earthquake planning. The authors conclude that the greatest successes have been achieved when technological considerations are counterbalanced with consideration of the values and preferences of those most at risk--the residents of quake-prone areas. Planning for Earthquakes will interest students and scholars of hazards management as well as land-use planners and government officials.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Local Disaster Management explores what resilience means for local communities and local governments on the front line of responding to disasters and emergencies. Disaster management is often seen as a major international issue undertaken by global actors such as the UN, Red Cross and Red Crescent. Yet fundamentally, all disasters are local. Every disaster, regardless of its type, affects individuals, families and communities before they escalate to encompassing one or many communities or nations. This volume therefore explores fundamental issues of disaster and emergency management at the local level. What is resilience? What does resilience mean for a local government seeking to lessen the impact of disasters on their community? How do local governments adapt through their experiences of disasters and how do they recover from catastrophic experiences? This book explores these issues with chapters from top scholars in the field, draws out lessons for local government officials and disaster managers seeking to build community resilience, prepare their communities for a changing environment, and facilitate recovery after disasters strike. Local Disaster Management provides invaluable insight for local governments charged with managing the inescapable effects of climate change and the increasing frequency and severity of disasters, as well as for scholars of local governance, disaster resilience, government policy, and disaster management. The chapters were originally published as a special issue in Local Government Studies.

Book excerpt: Nature presents humankind with a set of opportunities and risks which vary greatly in their spatial distribution. Earthquakes are the most feared natural hazards, as they occur without any recognizable warning, are unpredictable in space and time and inflict heavy losses in less than a minute duration. This book deals with the Earthquake vulnerability assessment of Srinagar city in Jammu and Kashmir, India. Vulnerability assessment with respect to natural hazards is a complex process that must consider multiple dimensions of vulnerability, including both physical and social factors. Socially created vulnerabilities are largely ignored, mainly due to the difficulty in quantifying them. This book gives a detailed vulnerability analysis of Srinagar city with respect to earthquakes by taking into consideration the physical, structural and non-structural parameters.

Book excerpt: In 1998 Armenia was commemorating the tenth anniversary of the catastrophic Spitak earthquake. The Second International Conference on "Earthquake Hazard and Seismic Risk Reduction" sponsored by the Government of the Republic of Armenia and United Nation's International Decade for Natural Disaster Reduction (UN/IDNDR) was held in dedication to that event between 14-21 September (later referred to as Yerevan Conference). The Yerevan Conference has been organized by the National Survey for Seismic Protection (NSSP) of the Republic of Armenia. All level's decision-makers (from the ministers to the local authorities), politicians, scientists, leaders of the executive and legislative powers, psychologists, leading businessmen, representatives from the private sector and the media as well as from the International Organizations have been invited by the Armenian NSSP to take part in joint discussion of the Seismic Risk Reduction Problem for the first time in the history of such forums. Armenian NSSP's such initiative has been triggered by the experience of the Spitak earthquake and other disasters. They showed that it will be possible to reduce the risks, posed by the natural disaster, only through the common efforts of all the community in co-operation with the International institutions.

Book excerpt: Discusses efforts of city governments in California and Washington State to address earthquake risks. Local governmental willingness and ability to undertake risk-reduction programs have more to do with local political demands and community resources than with objective risk or previous earthquake experience. State mandates have a selective impact on local risk-reduction efforts. The principal policy lessons concern the need to address gaps in local risk-reduction efforts through more careful targeting of federal and state programs.
