Book excerpt: In 'Mahatma Gandhi: an apostle of applied human ecology', Dr T N Khoshoo, a well-known environmental scientist, presents a selection of Mahatma Gandhi's views on the environment, elaborates on them to show that they are as relevant today as they were before, and reinterprets them by adding his extensive commentary on many of the topics. The book highlights the essential truth, clearly perceived by Mahatma Gandhi, that the human being must be the focus of all attempts to analyse and address environmental issues and emphasizes the need for a creative synthesis between the rural development under a local government and industrial development at the macro level.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 9/11 marked the beginning of a century that is defined by widespread violence. Every other day seems to be a furthering of the already catastrophic present towards a more disastrous tomorrow. With climate change looming over us, frequent economic instability, religious wars, and relentless political mayhem, life for what we have made of it seems more and more unsustainable. Douglas Allen insists that we look to Gandhi, if only selectively and creatively, in order to move towards a nonviolent and sustainable future. Is a Gandhi-informed swaraj technology, valuable but humanly limited, possible? What would a Gandhian world—a more egalitarian, interconnected, decentralized—of globalization look like? Focusing on key themes in Gandhi’s thinking such as violence and nonviolence, absolute truth and relative truth, ethical and spiritual living, and his critique of modernity, the book compels us to rethink our positions today.

Full of original research on both Gandhi and Holy Mother Amma, it offers a different view of these leaders, relevant to our planetary crisis. With extensive quotations from Gandhi and Amma, an exhaustive index and appendices, this book is the 'People's Manual' of the planetary movement towards ethical life in harmony with Nature. It lays an important foundation stone in the field of Earth Ethics. The book begins the discussion of Earth ethical ideals through a portrayal of the relevance of these two world teachers, and India's unique contribution to the dawning global consensus on universal human values. It delves into the awareness, practices and vows that Gandhi held which enabled him to place himself into harmony. Amma's teachings regarding these means touch dimensions where his words do not reach. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Humanistic Philosophy of Gandhi Gandhi’s great contribution to humanism consists in conceiving a religion that centres almost wholly around man and his life here in this world. Religion, according to him, should pervade all our activities, it cannot and ought not to be pursued in seclusion from one’s fellow beings and in separation from life’s other activities. The equivalent for Religion is “Dharma” in Sanskrit which means moral obligation and connotes individual’s integrity as well as social solidarity. Gandhi understood religion completely from that point of view. His Humanism is integral, discussing all the aspects of human life and has rationalist attitudes that differ from Romantic Humanism as well as Radical Humanism and yet synthesizes the two. Gandhian philosophy is not only simultaneously political, moral and religious, it is also traditional and modern, simple and complex. It embodies numerous Western influences to which Gandhi was exposed, but being rooted in ancient Indian culture and harnessing eternal and universal moral and religious principles, there is much in it that is not at all new. This is why Gandhi could say: “I have nothing new to teach the world. Truth and nonviolence are as old as the hills.” Gandhi is concerned even more with the spirit than with the form. If the spirit is consistent with truth and nonviolence, the truthful and nonviolent form will automatically result. Despite its anti-Westernism, many hold its outlook to be ultra-modern, in fact ahead of its time - even far ahead. Perhaps the philosophy is best seen as a harmonious blend of the traditional and modern. The multifaceted nature of Gandhi’s thought also can easily lead to the view that it is extremely complex. The book is intended to assist students and teachers who are interested in knowing about Gandhian Philosophy. Contents: • Gandhian Ideas in Philosophy • World and God • Swaraj • Relevance of Gandhi in the Political World Today • Gandhian Philosophy in the 21 Century • The Essence of Gandhi • Is Gandhi Relevant Today • Immortality of Gandhian Philosophy • Rediscovering the Mahatma’s Way • Gandhi’s Dialogue on Civilization

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In volume 1 of Gandhi and the Psychology of Nonviolence the authors advanced a scientific psychology of nonviolence, derived from principles enunciated by Gandhi and supported by current state-of-the-art research in psychology. In this second volume the authors demonstrate its potential contribution across a wide range of applied psychology fields. As we enter the era of the Anthropocene, they argue, it is imperative to make use of Gandhi’s legacy through our evolving noospheric consciousness to address the urgent problems of the 21st century. The authors examine Gandhi’s contributions in the context of both established areas such as the psychology of religion, educational, community and organizational psychology and newer fields including environmental psychology and the psychology of technology. They provide a nuanced analysis which engages with both the latest research and the practical implications for initiatives like the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. The book concludes with an overview of Gandhi’s contribution to modern psychology, which encompasses the history, development, and current impetus behind emerging work in the field as a whole. It marks an exciting contribution to studies of both Gandhi and psychology that will also provide unique insights for scholars of applied psychology, education, environmental and development studies.
