Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The life of Phonse Tobin was anything but ordinary. Born in 1905, he followed on behind soldiers as they marched to the wharves to depart for WW1. He earned pocket money by trapping rats and collecting the South Melbourne Council's rat bounty, and almost 'haunted' the Collins Street movie and live theatres. After leaving school in 1919 he worked as a storeman, salesman, soldier and fireman. In 1934 Phonse and his brothers Leo, Tom and Kevin started what has become Australia's most successful family-owned funeral service company. A natural entertainer, Phonse possessed a fine singing voice and produced many amateur theatrical productions in the 1930s. He was a good all-round sportsman and a successful professional footrunner. He was a long-serving member of the North Melbourne Football Club committee and was the club’s president from 1955 to 1957. He was a life member of both the NMFC and the VFL (now AFL). Phonse married Vera Crough in 1935. They had four children and their direct descendants number 38. Phonse was one of those rare characters who could meet, communicate and be at ease with people of all classes and walks of life - from prize fighters to prime ministers, from 'mug' punters to wealthy publicans or bookmakers, from Knights of the Southern Cross to knights of the realm, from everyday parish priests to 'princes' of the church, and from grave diggers to governors. Like everyone else, he had his failings. But these failings – such as they were – were more than offset by his strength of character, generous spirit, creative flair, kindness to people in need, and his love for and undying support of his family.

Book excerpt: By approaching workplace performance from the perspective of the theatre, my previous books2 have attempted to illustrate the connection between work and the world of drama and dramatic texts. Here now the emphasis is on performance at work, borrowing in many instances, as we shall see, from the theatre for the sake of satisfying an audience comprised of our stakeholders. That we are all performing at any moment is a noted idea. With the increasing presence of surveillance cameras in many towns and cities today, we are indeed almost continually in the spotlight. That said, personal performance in this book relates to our intentional actions as opposed to activities merely performed as habits or reactions to stimuli deriving from external sources. Focusing on performance, potential and the workplace, certain ideas were originally produced as material for my personal blog3 over the period June 2013-June 2014. Excerpted from the Introduction

Book excerpt: "Dark days are these. "I am mourning the loss of my friend. I am a broken man, incomplete. "I left my home on a quest to destroy the bag or hide it forever but my heart died the day my friend did and I now lack motivation, purpose and hope. "Every day is a struggle to exist. Every day is a fight. "The witches are coming for me. Three remain. Two travel from their mysterious Kingdom of Kakkakin and the third has spent an eternity alone. Epochs of isolation have driven him mad and he successfully anticipates our every move. He plots and schemes. He waits for us. "I must stay ahead of the witches but the little I understand of the wide world is in flux. Rights to the crown are being contested and life’s proving to be dangerous both at home and abroad. There is another golem, madder and more dangerous than the tracker and the turned continue to seek us out. Some come to kill us whilst others to join our disparate group of survivors. "Men, turned, witches and my ever expanding assemblage struggle to find a place in these rapidly changing lands and only time will tell if we can survive all the trouble that’s heading our way. "And I still have that damn bag and I swear it’s started to look at me."

Book excerpt: What would compel a man to place himself in constant danger in order to become a member of a wolf pack? To eat with them, putting his head into a carcass alongside the wolves' gnashing teeth? To play, hunt, and spar with them, suffering bruises and bites? To learn their language so his howl is indistinguishable from theirs? To give up a normal life of relationships and family so that he can devote himself completely to the protection of these wild animals? In The Man Who Lives with Wolves, Shaun Ellis reveals how his life irrevocably changed the first time he set eyes on a wolf. In exhilarating prose, he takes us from his upbringing in the wilds of Norfolk, England, to his survival training with British Army Special Forces to the Nez Percé Indian lands in Idaho, where he first ran with a wolf pack for nearly two years. Offering an extraordinary look into the lives of these threatened, misunderstood creatures, Ellis shares how he ate raw kill–and little else; washed rarely, and only in plain water; learned to bury his face into the carcasses of prey–and, when necessary, to defend his share of the kill; communicated with the pack by his howls and body language, which over time became seemingly identical to theirs; and observed from this unique vantage point how wolves give birth to and raise their young, and enforce order among the pack. After years of living in the wild, Shaun Ellis was barely able to recognize the feral face that stared back at him from the mirror. And in The Man Who Lives with Wolves, we discover the life of a rare and fascinating man who abandoned civilization but never lost touch with his humanity.

Book excerpt: AUTHOR OF SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER, LIFE TO THE LIMIT In his 17 years as a Formula 1 driver, Jenson Button has picked up a thing or two about how to do the job properly. Sure, you need to be able to drive a car fast - and Jenson is on hand to pass on a few tricks of the trade here - but you also need to know the real rules for making it to the top. Like, how to tell a multiple F1 champion they need to check their blind-spot. What the difference is between a helmet and a hat, and indeed a 'helmet-hat'. How to practise your champagne spray ahead of the big day. Why it is never, ever, under any circumstances a good idea to buy a yacht. And how to face down your team when you've just stacked their multi-million-pound car into a wall during practice. But 'JB' (nicknames in F1 run the full range from initials to, well, just using first names) doesn't stop there. HTBAF1D (catchy) lifts the lid on the people, the places, the weird rituals, the motorhomes, the media, the cars, the perks and the disasters. Join Jenson as he reveals how not to race a stupid big truck, why driving Le Mans is like having five shots of tequila before lunch, and what to do when you finally hang up your helmet-hat.

Book excerpt: CLASSIC SF—NOW AVAILABLE AS AN EBOOK FOR THE FIRST TIME! The Families. Insanely rich and richly insane. With world-spanning business interests, glamour and power, they are monarchs, Mafia and movie stars rolled into one. Since the Borgias and Medicis united in the 17th century the Families have transfixed, transformed and ruled the world. Top British Family the Gleeds are hosting the social event of the year, their annual ball. Venice has been reconstructed in the grounds of their estate and should provide the perfect romantic backdrop for Provender—their disaffected heir upon whom the Family line depends—to finally find a wife. But Provender shows no sign of settling down with any of the social beauties his mother parades before him... and in the moment when love does begin to blossom, Provender is kidnapped by an anti-Familial revolutionary. The future of the Gleeds, and of Europe, depends on the skills of two Anagrammatic Detectives—while Provender’s own future depends on the dark eyes and equally dark wit of a girl called Is. “Provender Gleed emerges as some of its author’s best work thus far. Its satire strikes vigorously home in the end, and its motivating love story is wonderfully conceived and handled.” Nick Gevers, Locus “Pick up James Lovegrove’s latest novel and you can rest assured that you are in the safe hands of a master craftsman. There a few things sweeter than reading a writer who’s so absolutely in love with the English language, and Lovegrove is clearly head over heels.” SFX “This is a book about quiet competence—Provender and Isis, his kidnapper’s accomplice, are one of the more charming couples in recent fiction because they are both too smart and too able for simple romance. An entirely quieter sort of British SF.” Roz Kaveney, Time Out “Provender Gleed shows, if more evidence was required, that James Lovegrove is one of the foremost novelists of his generation.” Interzone
