Book excerpt: In severe chloride/sulfate exposure conditions, there is need to provide more durable concrete, but this usually requires use of concretes with high cementitious binder contents that increase the risk of cracking due to thermal, autogenous, and drying shrinkage. Cracking is counter-productive to obtaining durability in the field. High performance concrete (HPC) can be durable in aggressive environments due to its superior mechanical, resistance to fluid transport, and durability characteristics. However, HPC mixtures typically have high binder contents (cement, pozzolanic minerals), and low w/cm, and therefore undergo high heat of hydration as well as autogenous shrinkage, resulting in rapid volume changes. The increased risk of autogenous deformation in high performance concrete can increase the risk of the cracking and durability of reinforced concrete structures such as bridge decks. For example, in Ontario the MTO had issues with in-creased incidence of transverse cracking in bridge decks when 50 MPa HPC was used relative to traditional 35 MPa concretes. A review of their construction records indicated that this problem was often related to concretes that set quickly and rapidly developed high temperature rise due to heat of hydration. The effects of ground granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBFS) and silica fume (SF) on the durability of HPC were investigated. In this study, HPC mixtures at 0.33 w/c were made with three sources of blended cements containing 8% SF mixed with 25, 35 and 50% GGBFS replacements by mass of cement. The compressive strength, drying shrinkage, and transport properties were measured. The test results have shown that increased fineness of the silica fume blended cement enhances the resistance to fluid transport and mechanical properties, but results in increased drying shrinkage, leading to increased cracking potential. A comprehensive study was conducted to understand (a) the interrelation between different mechanisms of volume change (thermal deformation, autogenous shrinkage, drying shrinkage) under different standard and non-standard conditions and (b) the role of different shrinkage mitigation methods (e.g. by either increasing GGBFS content to overcome early-age free and re-strained thermal deformation as well as autogenous shrinkage, or by reducing the cement binder content).

Book excerpt: This monograph is written based on the author's research on the assessment, control, and repair of cracking of early-age concrete in the recent decade. The technique of internal curing for increasing cracking resistance of early-age concrete is further developed through experimental and theoretical research. It establishes models for predicting the internal relative humidity and autogenous shrinkage of internally cured concrete at early age; reveals the variation law and mechanism of early-age tensile creep of internally cured concrete; and explores the variation law and mechanism of early-age cracking resistance of internally cured concrete under continuous restrained condition or uniaxial restrained condition. It is designed as a reference work for professionals or practitioners and a textbook for undergraduates or postgraduates. As such, this book provides valuable knowledge, useful methods, and practical experience that can be considered in the field of concrete cracking control.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The very high mechanical strength and enhanced durability of ultra highperformance concrete (UHPC) make it a strong contender for several concrete applications. However, UHPC has a very low water-to-cement ratio, which increases its tendency to undergo early-age shrinkage cracking with a risk of decreasing its long-term durability. To reduce the magnitude of early-age shrinkage and cracking potential, several mitigation strategies have been proposed including the use of shrinkage reducing admixtures, internal curing methods (e.g. superabsorbent polymers), expansive cements and extended moist curing durations. To appropriately utilize these strategies, it is important to have a complete understanding of the driving forces behind early-age volume change and how these shrinkage mitigation methods work from a materials science perspective to reduce shrinkage under field like conditions. This dissertation initially uses a first-principles approach to understand the interrelation mechanisms between different shrinkage types under simulated field conditions and the role of different shrinkage mitigations methods. The ultimate goal of the dissertation is to achieve lower early-age shrinkage and cracking risk concrete along with reducing its environmental and economic impact. As a result, a novel environmentally friendly shrinkage reducing technique based on using partially hydrated cementitious materials (PHCM) from waste concrete is proposed. The PHCM principle, mechanisms and efficiency were evaluated compared to other mitigation methods. Furthermore, the potential of replacing cement with wollastonite microfibers was investigated as a new strategy to produce UHPC with lower carbon foot-print, through reducing the cement production. Finally, an artificial neural networks (ANN) model for early-age autogenous shrinkage of concrete was proposed. The evidence and insights provided by the experiments can be summarized in: drying and autogenous shrinkage are dependant phenomena and applying the conventional superposition principle will lead to an overestimation of the actual autogenous shrinkage, adequately considering in-situ conditions in testing protocols should allow gaining a better understanding of shrinkage mitigation mechanisms, the iii PHCM technique provides a passive internal restraining system that resists deformation as early as the cementitious materials are mixed, wollastonite microfibers can act as an internal restraint for shrinkage, reinforcing the microstructure at the micro-crack level and leading to an enhancement of the early-age engineering properties, along with gaining environmental benefits, and ANN showed success in predicting autogenous shrinkage under simulated field conditions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Concrete volume changes throughout its service life. The total in-service volume change is the resultant of applied loads and shrinkage. When loaded, concrete undergoes an instantaneous elastic deformation and a slow inelastic deformation called creep. Deformation of concrete in the absence of applied loads that result in a volume decrease is often called shrinkage and is related to moisture loss and temperature change. Drying shrinkage has been studied extensively; ASTM C 157 measures the shrinkage of concrete prisms over time. The specimens are cured and tested in a variety of ways; however, they are not tested for length change during the first 24 hr after they are cast. Therefore, the magnitude of the early age (first 24 hr) volume change is not measured using this standard. With the use of high performance concrete and rapid setting cements, there is a potential for a significant early age volume change because of the increased cement content and heat of hydration within the first 24 hr after the concrete is cast. Therefore, there is a need to measure this early age volume change in order to determine its magnitude and its effect on the durability of the concrete structure. The first objective of this investigation was to develop a simple, accurate technique to measure the early age volume change of concrete. The second objective was to investigate the early age volume change of a variety of concrete mixtures used by the Virginia Department of Transportation using the developed technique to aid in determining if the mixtures tested had significant early age shrinkage, which could lead to a higher probability of concrete cracking. Measurements on a variety of concretes using the testing procedure developed showed that mixtures with lower early age shrinkage tended to have greater shrinkage at later ages relative to mixtures with greater early age shrinkage. By using this procedure, VDOT will be able to determine the total magnitude of shrinkage in various concrete mixtures, which will lead to a better understanding of the material being used. The result will be project specifications that will lead to a more durable, longer lasting, and safer concrete structure.

Book excerpt: Restraint and intrinsic stresses in concrete at early ages are vitally important for concrete structures which must remain free of water-permeable cracks, such as water-retaining structures, tunnel linings, locks and dams. The development of hydration heat, stiffness and strength, also the degree of restraint and, especially for high-strength concrete, non-thermal effects, are decisive for sensitivity to cracking. Determining thses stresses in the laboratory and in construction components has led to a clearer understanding of how they develop and how to optimize mix design, temperature and curing conditions. New testing equipment has enabled the effects of all the important parameters to be qualified and more reliable models for predictiong restraint stresses to be developed. Thermal Cracking in Conrete at Early Ages contains 56 contributions by leading international specialists presented at the RILEM Symposium held in October 1994 at the Technical University of Munich. It will be valuable for construction and site engineers, concrete technologists and scientists.

High-strength concrete offers many benefits. Higher compressive strengths allow for a reduction in the cross-sectional dimensions of columns and walls in buildings. Its greater stiffness allows for increasing building heights while controlling sway and occupant comfort. Civil structures such as bridges have benefited from greater span lengths, shallower beam sections, wider girder spacing, and extended service life. Illustrated with real life examples, through documented case histories, High-Strength Concrete will be a valuable resource for contractors, producers, inspection agencies, as well as engineers and researchers.
