Book excerpt: Illustrations: 21 Maps Description: Royal endowments to Brahmanas have been interpreted either as a factor of political integration or disintegration in Indian history. Through the first thorough presentation and analysis of the epigraphic data from Orissa, this study argues that the period AD 300-1147 was one of intensive state formation and political development in which royal grants played an important integrative role. During this period, Brahmanas, many of whom were ritual specialists associated with the Yajurveda, emerged as land-holders endowed by royal decree with privileged control over land. Despite the consistent appearance of sectarian affiliations in the royal inscriptions, temples did not benefit from royal patronage on a comparable scale. Until the close of the period under review, it was the gift of land to Brahmanas, not the royally-endowed temple establishment that was a major basis of royal legitimation and political integration in Orissa.

Book excerpt: Orissa, one of the ancient most seats of Indian civilization, abounds in temples and sculptures of very high artistic value. A careful examination of the monuments found in that region will convince anybody that the Aryan style in its purest form was prevalent there only in the whole of India. No apology is therefore needed to study the architectural remains of Orissa, which the learned author has done in the present volume. The author has, besides describing quite a few architectural remains in the Puri District in Orissa, tried to give a scientific exposition of the principles of architecture and sculpture obtaining there. Though he has raised many points of controversial nature, he spared no pains to illustrate his opinions by concrete examples. In the second chapter of the book, a brief outline of the political history of the political history of the province has been furnished, with which its architectural history is intimately connected. The principles of Aryan architecture and sculpture have been illustrated in the fifth and the sixth chapters while they have been illustrated in the last three chapters. Chapter V deals with the main features and the subsidiary parts of Orissan temples and the relative potions of different sections in the general ground plan. In subsequent chapters, the author has put forward formulas for the ratio of the height of the Vimana to the length of the base and of the thickness of the walls relative to the height and proportion of the edifice to be raised, the plinth pedestal, wall construction and bonds; the author has also made useful observations on the deities represented in the temples of the Saivas, Vaisnavas and Souras. Briefly, the work is a valuable contribution to the subject.

Book excerpt: Art and History: Texts, Contexts and Visual Representations in Ancient and Early Medieval India seeks to locate the historical contexts of premodern Indian art traditions. The volume examines significant questions, such as: What were the purposes served by art? How were religious and political ideas and philosophies conveyed through visual representations? How central were prescription, technique and style to the production of art? Who were the makers and patrons of art? How and why do certain art forms, meanings and symbols retain a relevance across context? With contributions from historians and art historians seeking to unravel the interface between art and history, the volume dwells on the significance of visual representations in specific regional historical contexts, the range of symbolic signification attached to these and the mythologies and textual prescriptions that contribute to the codification and use of representational forms. Supplemented with over 60 images, this volume is a must-read for scholars and researchers of history and art.
