In the method described the historian geographer, and architectural historian collaborate in research in primary sources such as court records, as well as secondary ones including surveying and documenting the formal and vernacular architecture associated with such an early road system up to the twentieth century. Since it includes course work in the School of Architecture at the University of Virginia, it provides the student with a learning experience in interrelated disciplines outside the classroom and an introduction to the architectural patterns associated with an early road system as opposed to the usual town setting context. The paper also describes the origin of the collaboration, the early roads surveyed, the road order abstract methodology, the architectural survey course methodology and the results, future studies, and some of the developing applications of the process.

Each road was opened and maintained by an overseer (or surveyor) of the highways, who was appointed each year by the Gentlemen Justices. The overseer was usually assigned all the able-bodied men (the Labouring Male Tithables ) living on or near the road. These laborers then furnished their own tools, wagons, and teams and were required to work on the roads for six days each year. County court records relating to roads and transportation are collectively know as road orders. The Virginia Transportation Research Council s published volumes of road orders and related materials contain not only information on early roads, but also the names of inhabitants who lived and worked along the roadways, plantations, farms, landmarks, landforms, and bodies of water. Much of this information is found nowhere else in early records, making these publications invaluable not only to historical and cultural resources research, but also to other disciplines, including social history, preservation planning, environmental science, and genealogy. Book excerpt: At present, there are no clear standards for applying National Register criteria to roads and for objectively researching and determining the National Register eligibility of roadways in Virginia. Basic historic documentation of Virginia roads is often poor, incomplete, or incorrect. These facts, along with the large number of old roads that lie within the borders of the Commonwealth of Virginia, necessitate the identification of standards for historical documentation and a rating system for accurately and objectively determining the historic significance of roads in Virginia. This project identified standards for historical documentation and for the identification of objective criteria for determining the historic significance (i.e., National Register eligibility) of roads in Virginia. A general historical background of roads in Virginia, procedures for their evaluation for historic significance, and a number of case studies of various types of Virginia roads are included in this report. A series of recommendations are offered to address (1) inconsistencies in the evaluation of Virginia roads for historic significance and (2) misconceptions concerning various aspects of National Register designation.
