Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Early Latin Theology presents seven of Bernard Lonergan's most important early theological works in English translation and the original Latin on facing pages under one cover for the first time. First composed as supplements to the texts he used in his courses, these writings are considered to be Lonergan's initial efforts in the functional specialty he would come to call 'systematics.' They also represent ideas that would remain constant throughout his career. Among the significant works included is 'Supplementary Notes on Sanctifying Grace.' This seminal essay contains what is likely Lonergan's most complete systematic treatment of the topic, and a much more extensive presentation of Lonergan's four-point hypothesis regarding the divine relations and created grace than many have previously read.

Book Synopsis Augustine's Early Theology of Image by : Gerald P. Boersma
Download or read book Augustine's Early Theology of Image written by Gerald P. Boersma and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The question of what it means for Christ to be the "image of God," or imago dei, lies at the heart of the Christological debates of the fourth century. In this book, Gerald P. Boersma examines three Western pro-Nicene theologies of the imago dei, which tackle the question of whether human beings and Christ can both be considered to be the "image of God." Boersma goes on to examine Augustine's early theology of the imago dei, prior to his ordination (386-391). He argues that although Augustine's early theology of image builds on that of Hilary of Poitiers, Marius Victorinus, and Ambrose of Milan, Augustine was able to affirm, in ways that his predecessors were not, how both Christ and the human person can be considered the imago dei.
Book Synopsis Deification in the Latin Patristic Tradition by : Jared Ortiz
Download or read book Deification in the Latin Patristic Tradition written by Jared Ortiz and published by Studies in Early Christianity. This book was released on 2019 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Contributors to this volume refute the widely held perception that the doctrine of deification primarily belonged in the Eastern Church, and that the Western Church reduced the rich biblical and Greek patristic understanding of salvation to a narrow view of redemption. To the contrary, these essays provide evidence of the wide-ranging use of deification themes in major Latin patristic sources, showing that deification was a native part of early Latin theology that was consitently and creatively employed"--
Book Synopsis Augustine's Early Theology of Image by : Gerald P. Boersma
Download or read book Augustine's Early Theology of Image written by Gerald P. Boersma and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016-01-15 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does it mean for Christ to be the "image of God"? And, if Christ is the "image of God," can the human person also unequivocally be understood to be the "image of God"? Augustine's Early Theology of Image examines Augustine's conception of the imago dei and makes the case that it represents a significant departure from the Latin pro-Nicene theologies of Hilary of Poitiers, Marius Victorinus, and Ambrose of Milan only a generation earlier. Augustine's predecessors understood the imago dei principally as a Christological term designating the unity of divine substance. But, Gerald P. Boersma argues, Augustine affirms that Christ is an image of equal likeness, while the human person is an image of unequal likeness. Boersma's careful study thus argues that a Platonic and participatory evaluation of the nature of "image" enables Augustine's early theology of the image of God to move beyond that of his Latin predecessors and affirm the imago dei both of Christ and of the human person.
