Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early History of the North Carolina Medical Society As the work progressed such a large amount of material accumulated that it became quite plain it could not all be judiciously handled in one lecture without overtaxing the patience of even the most patient audience. Therefore, we will study tonight only the Early History of the North Carolina Medical Society. For convenience we will divide the subject into two periods. The first embraces the years 1799-1804. Perhaps few in this audience know that there was a North Carolina Medical Society antedating the present organization by fifty years. Indeed, Dr. Thomas F. Wood says there is a rare book in the library of the late Governor Clark, by Joseph Pignatius, which contains a reference to a still earlier Society. [Slide] North Carolina Medical Society Organized. The following are quotations from the Raleigh Register: November 12, 1799: It is contemplated by several Gentlemen of the Faculty, in the State, to form themselves into a Medical Society, and that they intend to convene for that purpose in this city some time in the month of December. December 10, 1799: Dr. Calvin Jones, "Secretary of Correspondence," published a notice that the Medical Society would hold its meeting in Raleigh December 16, 1799. December 17, 1799: The Medical Society met this day when Dr. (Jason) Hand was appointed to the Chair, and the Society proceeded to business. [Slide] An Act To Incorporate The North Carolina Medical Society. Laws of North Carolina, 1799. Chapter XXXVIII. I. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of North Carolina, and it is hereby enacted by the authority of the same: That the physicians who have associated themselves together, forming a medical society, be incorporated by the name and title of the North Carolina Medical Society; by which name the society shall have perpetual succession and a common seal and be entitled to sue and be sued, and possess all the other rights and privileges usually vested incorporated bodies, and have a right to hold and possess in their own right, any estate, real or personal, the said society may acquire. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aaron McDuffie Moore (1863–1923) was born in rural Columbus County in eastern North Carolina at the close of the Civil War. Defying the odds stacked against an African American of this era, he pursued an education, alternating between work on the family farm and attending school. Moore originally dreamed of becoming an educator and attended notable teacher training schools in the state. But later, while at Shaw University, he followed another passion and entered Leonard Medical School. Dr. Moore graduated with honors in 1888 and became the first practicing African American physician in the city of Durham, North Carolina. He went on to establish the Durham Drug Company and the Durham Colored Library; spearhead and run Lincoln Hospital, the city's first secular, freestanding African American hospital; cofound North Carolina Mutual Life Insurance Company; help launch Rosenwald schools for African American children statewide; and foster the development of Durham's Hayti community. Dr. Moore was one-third of the mighty "Triumvirate" alongside John Merrick and C. C. Spaulding, credited with establishing Durham as the capital of the African American middle class in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and founding Durham's famed Black Wall Street. His legacy can still be seen on the city streets and country backroads today, and an examination of his life provides key insights into the history of Durham, the state, and the nation during Reconstruction and the beginning of the Jim Crow Era.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One Blood traces both the life of the famous black surgeon and blood plasma pioneer Dr. Charles Drew and the well-known legend about his death. On April 1, 1950, Drew died after an auto accident in rural North Carolina. Within hours, rumors spread: the man who helped create the first American Red Cross blood bank had bled to death because a whites-only hospital refused to treat him. Drew was in fact treated in the emergency room of the small, segregated Alamance General Hospital. Two white surgeons worked hard to save him, but he died after about an hour. In her compelling chronicle of Drew's life and death, Spencie Love shows that in a generic sense, the Drew legend is true: throughout the segregated era, African Americans were turned away at hospital doors, either because the hospitals were whites-only or because the 'black beds' were full. Love describes the fate of a young black World War II veteran who died after being turned away from Duke Hospital following an auto accident that occurred in the same year and the same county as Drew's. African Americans are shown to have figuratively 'bled to death' at white hands from the time they were first brought to this country as slaves. By preserving their own stories, Love says, they have proven the enduring value of oral history. General Interest/Race Relations

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tinsley Harrison -- doctor, teacher, researcher, medical school leader -- is one of the most important medical figures of the 20th century. He edited the first five editions of Harrison’s Principles of Internal Medicine, regarded as a quintessential medical text and perhaps the best-selling medical textbook of all time. He traveled the world in his capacity as a teaching doctor, made significant contributions to scholarship, and served as the dean/medical chairman at four medical schools. He is a titan of the field, an enormous presence central to the narrative of American medicine. Author Dr. James Pittman knew Harrison well, studying and teaching with him from the 1950s until Harrison’s death. Pittman spent six years interviewing Harrison near the end of Harrison’s life, and these lengthy interviews, as well as interviews with his colleagues, family and friends, form the bulk of the scholarship of this compulsively readable book. Pittman brings his own medical knowledge to the fore, as well as his personal friendship with the subject, in this beautifully written character study of one of science’s great but not well-known men. Harrison lived a long, exciting life, and in these pages, readers will get a glimpse of the historical forces that shaped and in turn were shaped by this legendary doctor.
