Book Synopsis Surry County, North Carolina, Wills, 1771-1827 by : Jo White Linn
Download or read book Surry County, North Carolina, Wills, 1771-1827 written by Jo White Linn and published by Genealogical Publishing Com. This book was released on 1992 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on recorded wills and original wills at the North Carolina State Archives as well as "Loose Estate Papers" of intestates, these abstracts cover not only wills but powers of attorney, bonds, inventories, bills of sale, etc. Significantly, Surry County lay within the Granville Proprietary at its formation, and after Lord Granville's death in 1763 until 1778, the Proprietary land office did not reopen, making it very difficult--but for these will abstracts--for the present-day researcher to establish the residence of many individuals during that time period. What is more, as there are no extant marriage bonds for Surry County for the period 1771 to 1780, these will abstracts assume an importance out of all proportion to their customary value.

Book Synopsis Governor Alexander Martin by : Charles D. Rodenbough
Download or read book Governor Alexander Martin written by Charles D. Rodenbough and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-06-08 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Governor Alexander Martin of North Carolina was one of the most important figures in the colonial and early state history of North Carolina. A 1756 graduate of Princeton, he was the first president of the Board of Trustees of the University of North Carolina. He served longer as governor of the state than any other person until the election of Luther Hodges in the 20th century. He was conferred an honorary doctorate by Princeton and elected to membership in the American Philosophical Society while he was a U.S. senator. While in the Senate, he fought successfully to open the Senate to the public. He was one of five North Carolina delegates to the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia. He was a friend and protector of the Moravians and other non-conformists. He was the most powerful and effective leader from the frontier region of North Carolina for a quarter of a century. The first chapters of this biography discuss Martin's parents and their high regard for education, his time at Princeton, and his arrival in North Carolina in 1760. The next chapters explore Martin's and Rev. David Caldwell's effort to prevent bloodshed during Governor Tryon's confrontation with the Regulators that led up to the Battle of Alamance, Martin's experiences in the war as second in command of the North Carolina Regiment, his election as senator from Guilford County to the General Assembly in 1777, and his much-celebrated election as governor in 1781. The final three chapters of the book include information about his years in the U.S. Senate, his retirement at his home "Danbury" in Rockingham, North Carolina, his relationship with his family and his very detailed last will and testament. His home, "Danbury," later gave its name to Danbury, North Carolina, in Stokes County, which his nephews helped found about 1848, long after his death.

Book Synopsis Directory of Scots in the Carolinas, 1680-1830 by : David Dobson
Download or read book Directory of Scots in the Carolinas, 1680-1830 written by David Dobson and published by Genealogical Publishing Com. This book was released on 1986 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On a trip here from Scotland, David Dobson searched the archives of North and South Carolina and found a mass of material proving the presence of a large number of Scots in the Carolinas before and after the Revolution. He located similar records in university libraries and historical societies, and he also found in the 1850 Federal Census more information on persons of Scottish origin. The result of this research appears here in Volume 1 of Directory of Scots in the Carolinas (see also Directory of Scots in the Carolinas, 1680-1830, Volume 2). In this work Mr. Dobson presents, for the first time, a comprehensive list of Scottish settlers in the Carolinas from 1680 to 1830. In general, the details provided include age, place and date of birth, and often names of parents, names of spouse and children, occupation, place of residence, and the date of emigration from Scotland. About 6,000 Scots are identified in this book, and a small number are listed in Dobson's Scottish Settlers series, but the majority--90% or so--are listed here for the first time.
