Book Synopsis Drama, Play, and Game by : Lawrence M. Clopper
Download or read book Drama, Play, and Game written by Lawrence M. Clopper and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2001-05 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How was it possible for drama, especially biblical representations, to appear in the Christian West given the church's condemnation of the theatrum of the ancient world? In a book with radical implications for the study of medieval literature, Lawrence Clopper resolves this perplexing question. Drama, Play, and Game demonstrates that the theatrum repudiated by medieval clerics was not "theater" as we understand the term today. Clopper contends that critics have misrepresented Western stage history because they have assumed that theatrum designates a place where drama is performed. While theatrum was thought of as a site of spectacle during the Middle Ages, the term was more closely connected with immodest behavior and lurid forms of festive culture. Clerics were not opposed to liturgical representations in churches, but they strove ardently to suppress May games, ludi, festivals, and liturgical parodies. Medieval drama, then, stemmed from a more vernacular tradition than previously acknowledged-one developed by England's laity outside the boundaries of clerical rule.
Book Synopsis Modern Mysteries by : Katie Normington
Download or read book Modern Mysteries written by Katie Normington and published by DS Brewer. This book was released on 2007 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A lively account of the modern staging of the medieval mystery plays, richly illustrated with stills and other photographs. The turn of the last millennium saw a sudden flourishing in the revival of the medieval mystery plays, with a number of different productions being staged across the country and further afield. But why were they staged? What features of the plays attracted the modern-day director? What can the mystery plays offer today's producers, directors, participants and audiences? This book seeks to answer these questions. Beginning with an exploration of the original staging conditions, the study goes on to examine the reasons why the plays are produced today, and through a series of case studies looks at how notions of community, identity and space are articulated within contemporary stagings: it considers productions at Chester, Chichester, Leeds, Lichfield, Lincoln, Toronto, Worsbrough, and York, as well as productions by the Royal National Theatre, Royal Shakespeare Company, and the Belgrade Theatre, Coventry. Importantly, the author uses evidence gleaned from interviews with directors and producers, and observation of rehearsals, and performances, to bring a fresh and modern perspective to bear. Richly illustrated. KATIENORMINGTON is Professor of Drama at Royal Holloway, University of London.
Book Synopsis The Cognitive Revolution in Western Culture by : Don LePan
Download or read book The Cognitive Revolution in Western Culture written by Don LePan and published by Broadview Press. This book was released on 1996-02-08 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why are the plots of Shakespeare and his contemporaries so different from those of his predecessors? This book argues that the answer is in part that certain forms of expectation were largely undeveloped in the medieval period. More broadly, it suggests that many of the causal and temporal thought processes that are second nature to us operated very differently or had not been developed in the minds of most medieval people. And conversely, it suggests that other mental faculties (such as the ability to respond to some of the elemental appeal of poetry) may have become dulled by the post-renaissance rationalist emphasis in our culture. In addition to drawing on a broad range of etymological and literary evidence (from the 10th century Gnomic verses to 16th-century drama) the book delves into medieval history, and draws many anthropological parallels. This is a significant study in the nature of narrative and an important investigation into the mental and cultural worlds of Shakespeare and his predecessors.

Book Synopsis Biblical References in Shakespeare's Plays by : Naseeb Shaheen
Download or read book Biblical References in Shakespeare's Plays written by Naseeb Shaheen and published by University of Delaware. This book was released on 2011-09-16 with total page 982 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The hundreds of biblical references in Shakespeare's plays give ample evidence that he was well acquainted with Scripture. Not only is the range of his biblical references impressive, but also the aptness with which he makes them. Hamlet and Othello each have more than fifty biblical references. No study of Shakespeare's plays is complete that ignores Shakespeare's use of scripture. The Bibles that Shakespeare knew, however, were not those that are in use today. By the time the King James Bible appeared in 1611, Shakespeare's career was all but over, and the Anglican liturgy that is evident in his plays is likewise one that few persons are acquainted with. This volume provides a comprehensive survey of the English Bibles of Shakespeare's day, notes their similarities and differences, and indicates which version the playwright knew best. The thorny question of what constitutes a valid biblical reference is also discussed. The study of Shakespeare's biblical references is not based on secondary sources. The author owned one of the world's largest collections of early English bibles, including over one hundred copies of the Geneva bible and numerous editions of other Bibles, prayer books, and books of homilies of Shakespeare's day. To be of real worth, a study of Shakespeare's biblical references should also enable the reader to determine which references Shakespeare borrowed from his plot sources and which he added from his own memory as part of his design for the play. The author studies every source that Shakespeare is known to have read or consulted before writing each play and has examined the biblical references in those sources. Shaheen then points out which biblical references in his literary sources Shakespeare accepted, and how he adapted them in his plays. This information is especially valuable when assessing the theological meanings that are sometimes imposed on his plays, meanings that often go beyond what Shakespeare intended or what his audience must have understood. Biblical References in Shakespeare's Plays is considerably broader in scope than any other study of its kind and provides the scholarly checks and balances in dealing with the subject that previous studies lacked. .
Book Synopsis Functions of Medieval English Stage Directions by : Philip Butterworth
Download or read book Functions of Medieval English Stage Directions written by Philip Butterworth and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-07-29 with total page 421 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When we speak of theatre, we think we know what a stage direction is: we tend to think of it as an authorial requirement, devised to be complementary to the spoken text and directed at those who put on a play as to what, when, where, how or why a moment, action or its staging should be completed. This is the general understanding to condition a theatrical convention known as the 'stage direction'. As such, we recognise that the stage direction is directed towards actors, directors, designers, and any others who have a part to play in the practical realisation of the play. And perhaps we think that this has always been the case. However, the term 'stage direction' is not a medieval one, nor does an English medieval equivalent term exist to codify the functions contained in extraneous manuscript notes, requirements, directions or records. The medieval English stage direction does not generally function in this way: it mainly exists as an observed record of earlier performance. There are examples of other functions, but even they are not directed at players or those involved in creating performance. More than 2000 stage directions from 40 or so plays and cycles have been included in the catalogue of the volume, and over 400 of those have been selected for analysis throughout the work. The purpose of this research is to examine the theatrical functions of medieval English stage directions as records of earlier performance. Examples of such functions are largely taken from outdoor scriptural plays. This book will be of great interest to students and scholars in theatre, medieval history and literature.
Book Synopsis A Place for Jesus by : Scott P. Mages
Download or read book A Place for Jesus written by Scott P. Mages and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2020-07-08 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hope is an endangered virtue in today’s chaotic world. Yet Christmas provides us with the inspiring reminder that our true hope lies not in the understanding that people can sometimes be good, but that God, who is good, is also faithful and loves us in our unloveliness and graces us in our gracelessness. In a unique guide for Christian travelers, Scott Mages marries the fascinating story of the figures that surround the infant Jesus in that inescapable seasonal tableau of shepherds and wise men, as told through the bible, folk tales, and art, with reflections on the enduring meanings of each. While addressing Christian curiosities like why so many manger scenes display Joseph with staff and lantern and where in the scripture we can find the ox and ass who preceded Mary in artists’ renditions, Mages leads others through the history of the figures of the crèche and their lessons while offering a spiritual preparation for Christmas. Shared for the curious and pious, lovers of odd facts and forgotten legends, and seekers of more than the glitz that often passes for Christmas, A Place for Jesus guides Christians on an inspiring journey to learn and understand the lessons surrounding the figures of the crèche.

Book Synopsis English Mystery Plays by : Peter Happe
Download or read book English Mystery Plays written by Peter Happe and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 1975-11-27 with total page 809 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Humour, pathos and suffering, and the culminating drama of the Crucifixion and Resurrection, give these plays a wonderful immediacy. Their action was conceived on a cosmic scale and all the enthusiasm and vitality of their writing is retained to this day. The energies of whole communities, notably at Chester, York and Wakefield, were devoted to their production and they were to influence later dramatists significantly. The grand design of the mystery plays was to celebrate the Christian story from 'The Fall of Lucifer' to the 'Judgement Day', and this volume contains thirty-eight plays, forming in itself a composite cycle and including almost all the incidents common to the extant cycles.
