Book Synopsis The First Poems in English by : Michael Alexander
Download or read book The First Poems in English written by Michael Alexander and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2008-05-29 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This selection of the earliest poems in English comprises works from an age in which verse was not written down, but recited aloud and remembered. Heroic poems celebrate courage, loyalty and strength, in excerpts from Beowulf and in The Battle of Brunanburgh, depicting King Athelstan’s defeat of his northern enemies in 937 AD, while The Wanderer and The Seafarer reflect on exile, loss and destiny. The Gnomic Verses are proverbs on the natural order of life, and the Exeter Riddles are witty linguistic puzzles. Love elegies include emotional speeches from an abandoned wife and separated lovers, and devotional poems include a vision of Christ’s cross in The Dream of the Rood, and Caedmon’s Hymn, perhaps the oldest poem in English, speaking in praise of God.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early English Poems: Selected and Edited This change of attitude, which might be illustrated by many similar examples, is assuredly a sign of progress. It is no depreciation of the labor of the scholar, but rather an evidence of its value. It is plain that the researches of the specialist in these fields, minute and contracted as they may have some times seemed, have had a wider influence, a more general significance, than might at first have been supposed. It is plain that these intensive students of the life, language, and literature of early England may be justly compared to those adventurers who press on in the van of immigration, and so open up to civilization regions hitherto inaccessible, or but sparsely settled. In this work of reclamation the translator as well as the pioneer scholar has his place and office. It is better, of course, to read this early literature in the language in which it was written, than to read it in translation, but it is better to read it in a translation, or in a modernized form, than not to read it at all. We may regret that Keats could not read the Iliad in Greek, and we may be thankful at the same time that he did read it in English. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Specimens of the Early English Poets, Vol. 3 of 3: To Which Is Prefixed, an Historical Sketch of the Rise and Progress of the English Poetry and Language It has been remarked by Bishop Percy, that almost all the poetry which was composed during the early part of the preceding reign was remarkable for the facility and musical flow of its versification; whereas the compositions of Donne, Jonson, and many of their contemporaries are, in general, unusually harsh and discordant. Indeed, our literature could not fail of reflecting, in some degree, the manners of the court. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Synopsis English Poems by : Walter Cochrane Bronson

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Poems: Old English and Middle English Periods, 450-1550 This volume is the first in order, although the last to appear, in a series of four volumes of English Poems, in tended especially for use with college classes. The aim and method of the series as a whole have been set forth in the prefaces to the other volumes and need not be repeated here, the less because the present volume differs considerably from the rest. It cannot well be used separately, as the later volumes can, but derives its chief value from its connection with the series: for the thorough study of Old English and Middle English poetry it is quite inadequate, but in an introductory survey course in English literature it may serve a useful end. To increase the value of the book for this purpose, some specimens of the early drama are given. Although plays are elsewhere excluded from the series and some of those here included exceed the strict chrono logical limits of the period.
