Unfortunately, by the time that this joint deterioration is observed it is often too late and costly partial depth repairs are needed. The deterioration is generally occurring in the joint behind the backer rod and joint sealant; as such, it is difficult to detect even if one is standing directly above the joint. This project investigated the use of electrical resistivity and ground penetrating radar as two techniques to detect premature joint deterioration. The thought process was that if the joint deterioration is determined at an early stage, low cost corrective actions can be taken to extend the life of the concrete. The electrical response was measured for mortars subjected to a temperature cycle from 23 °C to -35 °C, with varying degrees of saturation, and varying salt concentrations. The resistivity increased as the degree of saturation was reduced due to the reduction in the volume of the conductive medium and increase in tortuosity. Changes in resistivity were detected when cracking occurred in the sample. The magnitude of these changes was similar to that detected using changes in the ultrasonic wave speed. Ground penetrating radar (GPR) was used effectively to detect fluid accumulation in the saw-cut joint behind the joint sealant. The typical GPR waveforms are however difficult and time consuming to interpret. A signal processing approach called, referred to as the CID, was used to obtain a single number that reflects the potential for fluid in the joint. Scalar waveform features and the computed CID can be used to estimate which joints may contain fluid thereby providing insights into which joint sealant sections may need to be repaired or when a sufficient number of joints may contain fluid suggesting a larger joint maintenance effort be performed to seal the joints or the concrete.

Book excerpt: Longitudinal joints of concrete pavements constitute essential elements in the overall functionality and performance of the pavement system. The noticeable deterioration of these joints on some of Kansas highways lead to performing a preliminary study in order to determine the severity of the problem and analyze the design and construction issues that might have contributed to the observed damage. Data was collected from 31 sections of interstate highway in the Kansas City, Kansas metropolitan area. Parameters such as the age of the pavement and sealant, accumulated volumes of total and heavy traffic, type of joint, slab length, slab thickness, concrete strength, steel reinforcement, etc. were analyzed in relation to the observed spalling of the longitudinal joints. The variation of these parameters, with the spalling measures presented in this report, was studied.

Book excerpt: As Portland cement concrete (PCC) pavements age, longitudinal and transverse joints can exhibit signs of distress as a result of traffic loading, climatic variations, materials-related issues, and construction defects. Although only small areas are often involved, the joint distress can substantially disrupt traffic flow and increase pavement roughness, sacrificing consumer ride comfort. When immediate action is required, temporary repairs are often made using readily available materials, such as cold mix or other asphalt materials. These temporary materials are often replaced with more permanent materials to reestablish the integrity and functionality of the concrete pavement. The goal of this project is to provide a guide for agencies to establish an effective joint repair program. The final report reviews the background information explaining why this research was performed, summarizes the findings from previous similar research studies, details how the patches were constructed and how they performed, and provides a Product Matrix that includes installation requirements, equipment needed, along with the life expectancy of the products to compare and guide the reader through product selection.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this research was to summarize existing nondestructive test methods that have the potential to be used to detect materials-related distress (MRD) in concrete pavements. The various nondestructive test methods were then subjected to selection criteria that helped to reduce the size of the list so that specific techniques could be investigated in more detail. The main test methods that were determined to be applicable to this study included two stress-wave propagation techniques (impact-echo and spectral analysis of surface waves techniques), infrared thermography, ground penetrating radar (GPR), and visual inspection. The GPR technique was selected for a preliminary round of "proof of concept" trials. GPR surveys were carried out over a variety of portland cement concrete pavements for this study using two different systems. One of the systems was a state-of-the-art GPR system that allowed data to be collected at highway speeds. The other system was a less sophisticated system that was commercially available. Surveys conducted with both sets of equipment have produced test results capable of identifying subsurface distress in two of the three sites that exhibited internal cracking due to MRD. Both systems failed to detect distress in a single pavement that exhibited extensive cracking. Both systems correctly indicated that the control pavement exhibited negligible evidence of distress. The initial positive results presented here indicate that a more thorough study (incorporating refinements to the system, data collection, and analysis) is needed. Improvements in the results will be dependent upon defining the optimum number and arrangement of GPR antennas to detect the most common problems in Iowa pavements. In addition, refining high frequency antenna response characteristics will be a crucial step toward providing an optimum GPR system for detecting materials related distress.

This book was released on 1975 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studies of efforts in Virginia to reduce the incidence of reflection cracking when portland cement concrete pavements or bases are overlayed with asphaltic concrete are reported. The methods of reflection crack reduction discussed are: (1) The use of sand as a bond breaker between portland cement concrete pavements and asphaltic overlays, (2) the use of a high tensile strength fabric as a stress relieving layer between two asphaltic concrete overlays of an old portland cement concrete pavement on a weak subbase, and (3) the use of two types of fabric as stress relieving layers between asphaltic layers and a concrete base on a very strong subbase and subgrade. The following conclusions were drawn. 1. Neither sand as a bond breaker nor high strength fabrics as stress relieving layers are effective in reducing reflection cracking where vertical joint movement (differential deflection) is a significant factor. 2. When differential deflections are greater than about 0.002 in (0.05 mm) reflection cracks form early. Such cracking is delayed for lower differential deflection but may occur as the magnitude and frequency of wheel loadings increase. 3. Both an asphalt impregnated polypropylene fabric and an unwoven, spun-bonded nylon fabric, when placed to span joints in portland cement concrete base and covered with an asphaltic concrete, overlay, are able to sustain the formation of reflection cracking in the overlaying layer without undergoing damage. 4. An asphalt impregnated polypropylene fabric spanning the joints in portland cement concrete pavements, and placed between the pavement and an asphaltic overlay, may be effective in reducing the infiltration of surface water to pavement sub-layers. There is some evidence that pavement pumping may be reduced by this method. 5. Both an asphalt impregnated polypropylene fabric and an unwoven, spun-bonded nylon fabric can delay the formation of reflection cracking. There is strong evidence, however, that such cracking is fatigue in nature and will eventually develop under the application of repetitive wheel loadings.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this guide is to help practitioners understand how to optimize concrete pavement joint performance through the identification, mitigation, and prevention of joint deterioration. It summarizes current knowledge from research and practice to help practitioners access the latest knowledge and implement proven techniques. Emphasizing that water is the common factor in most premature joint deterioration, this guide describes various types of joint deterioration that can occur. Some distresses are caused by improper joint detailing or construction, and others can be attributed to inadequate materials or proportioning. D cracking is a form of joint distress that results from the use of poor-quality aggregates. A particular focus in this guide is joint distress due to freeze-thaw action. Numerous factors are at play in the occurrence of this distress, including the increased use of a variety of deicing chemicals and application strategies. Finally, this guide provides recommendations for minimizing the potential for joint deterioration, along with recommendations for mitigation practices to slow or stop the progress of joint deterioration.

Book excerpt: This project utilized information from ground penetrating radar (GPR) and visual inspection via the pavement profile scanner (PPS) in proof-of-concept trials. GPR tests were carried out on a variety of portland cement concrete pavements and laboratory concrete specimens. Results indicated that the higher frequency GPR antennas were capable of detecting subsurface distress in two of the three pavement sites investigated. However, the GPR systems failed to detect distress in one pavement site that exhibited extensive cracking. Laboratory experiments indicated that moisture conditions in the cracked pavement probably explain the failure. Accurate surveys need to account for moisture in the pavement slab. Importantly, however, once the pavement site exhibits severe surface cracking, there is little need for GPR, which is primarily used to detect distress that is not observed visually. Two visual inspections were also conducted for this study by personnel from Mandli Communications, Inc., and the Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT). The surveys were conducted using an Iowa DOT video log van that Mandli had fitted with additional equipment. The first survey was an extended demonstration of the PPS system. The second survey utilized the PPS with a downward imaging system that provided high-resolution pavement images. Experimental difficulties occurred during both studies; however, enough information was extracted to consider both surveys successful in identifying pavement surface distress. The results obtained from both GPR testing and visual inspections were helpful in identifying sites that exhibited materials-related distress, and both were considered to have passed the proof-of-concept trials. However, neither method can currently diagnose materials-related distress. Both techniques only detected the symptoms of materials-related distress; the actual diagnosis still relied on coring and subsequent petrographic examination. Both technologies are currently in rapid development, and the limitations may be overcome as the technologies advance and mature.
