Farms were offered for sale, but there were few buyers. My father alone succeeded in selling his farm, and no doubt at a great sacrifice. As I remember, my father received about $3000 for 160 acres of finest farming land and 40 acres of timber land in the San gamon river bottom. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early Days in Old Oregon Old Oregon was a mighty sweep of country, and a most romantic one. From the northern border of Mexican California to near Sitka in Russian America it stretched, nearly eight hundred miles. Eastward it stretched over a country of mighty mountain ranges from which at regular intervals rose the snow peaks, ever glistening white, over a country of dense forests, of mighty rivers and foaming mountain torrents, over a country of sand and sagebrush, and on still eastward over the cut-rock desert where "men had songs for supper" and where no game could live, on and on eastward nearly a thousand miles until the limits of the Oregon country, at the crest of the main range of the Rockies, met the old-time, unknown Louisiana. The romance ever lingers. Still, as one stands on the green prairie at Fort Vancouver, for so many years the center of civilization on the lonely coast of Oregon, one hears echoes of the Brigade of Boats coming down the Columbia; still one hears the gay voices of the voyageurs singing in time to the dip of the paddle. Romance still lingers in vague tales of the blue-coated, brass-buttoned Hudson's Bay Company men who followed the forest trails. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Landscapes of Promise is the first comprehensive environmental history of the early years of a state that has long been associated with environmental protection. Covering the period from early human habitation to the end of World War II, William Robbins shows that the reality of Oregon's environmental history involves far more than a discussion of timber cutting and land-use planning. Robbins demonstrates that ecological change is not only a creation of modern industrial society. Native Americans altered their environment in a number of ways, including the planned annual burning of grasslands and light-burning of understory forest debris. Early Euro-American settlers who thought they were taming a virgin wilderness were merely imposing a new set of alterations on an already modified landscape. Beginning with the first 18th-century traders on the Pacific Coast, alterations to Oregon's landscape were closely linked to the interests of global market forces. Robbins uses period speeches and publications to document the increasing commodification of the landscape and its products. "Environment melts before the man who is in earnest," wrote one Oregon booster in 1905, reflecting prevailing ways of thinking. In an impressive synthesis of primary sources and historical analysis, Robbins traces the transformation of the Oregon landscape and the evolution of our attitudes toward the natural world.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Scenes of Earlier Days in Crossing the Plains to Oregon: And Experiences of Western Life Those who did not cross the plains, either to Oregon or California, in an early day have but little knowledge of the hardships endured by the way, or after their arrival at their future homes. I have frequently conversed with those who went to Oregon from 1843 to 1845 and '46 and after their arrival had to live on acorns for six weeks without meat. There were no cattle at the time in the country fit for beef, and game was very scarce, and even if it had been plenty hunting it on an acorn breakfast would have been very hard work Even after our arrival in Oregon at a later date, 1851, provisions were very scarce. The winter of 1852-53 for more than a month there was no flour to be had and no meat and we paid $8.50 for fifty pounds of very poor shorts and glad to get it at that price. In the spring a cargo of Chile flour came in and when we bought it we had to sieve out the long woolly worms and eat it or starve. In talking with friends about the scenes of earlier days and experiences of western life I have been frequently asked why do you not write them out and have them published in book form. My reply has been it always looked egotistical for a man to publish his own autobiography The reply was this is not your autobiography, but actual history that helps to tell about the settlement of the great west, a subject in which old and young are, or should be, deeply interested.
