Book excerpt: The missions of most early college high schools center around closing the achievement gap for students underrepresented in higher education - low-income, first-generation collegegoers, and people of color. Unfortunately, these same students often times are also underrepresented in early college high schools. This was the case for the subject of this thesis, a high-performing school in rural northern California that had lost sight of its original charge. In 2016, the school's staff began the hard work of shifting to an equity-focused mindset. They rewrote the mission statement, identified and removed barriers to entry, and developed multitiered systems of support. This paper documents and assesses that work by answering two questions. One, to what extent were barriers of entry removed for at-promise students? And two, to what extent was the achievement gap closed for these students once they attended the school? The researcher analyzed a variety of quantitative data to answer these questions. The results demonstrate promising shifts in the demographic makeup of the school (the percentage of at-promise students rose from 44% to 66%). They also reveal a need for further examination and expansion of supports. This paper highlights the work still required for the school to fully meet its mission. It also serves as a call to action -and blueprint- for all early college high schools to reflect on their own practices through a lens of equity.

It highlights promising practices used by CBTPs to help students who might have been considered noncollege-bound prepare for college credit course work. The report also discusses the challenges that CBTPs face when trying to include such students. The research for this report was conducted in the spring and fall of 2004. Case studies were undertaken in five states: California, Iowa, Minnesota, New York, and Texas. Two dual enrollment programs, an MCHS (Middle College High School), an International Baccalaureate program, and a Tech-Prep program were studied. The first section of the report describes the sites and examines some of the ways in which contextual features influence program implementation. The report then highlights findings regarding four key program features--student recruitment and selection processes; curriculum; support services; and data collection and use. For each feature, the researchers investigated the current practices of the case study sites, identified those practices that seemed most promising in meeting the needs of middle- and low-achieving students, and identified barriers to implementing them. An appendix presents more detailed profiles of each research site. Recommendations for policymakers and practitioners include: encourage broad student access; build strong collaborative relationships; and work with researchers to gather outcomes data. Book excerpt: Early college high schools (ECHS)were designed specifically to disrupt the inequities that are present in high schools by focusing on serving students underrepresented in higher education. ECHS students can earn 60 hours of college credit setting them on a fast track to college and degree completion. Utilizing Yosso's (2005) Community Cultural Wealth as a lens, this qualitative multi-case study examined the experience of six ECHS graduates, their self-perceptions of their own college readiness, and their definitions of college readiness. Findings from the study revealed the ECHS experience had a positive impact on participant college readiness, but also revealed the lack of support and development of resistance capital and familial capital. The study suggests an expansion of Yosso's Community Cultural Wealth to include self-capital to capture elements of internal growth during the ECHS experience. Findings from the study provide new perspectives of college readiness and recommendations for future research that are both race conscious and equity minded.
