Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early Christian Hymns: Translations of the Verses of the Most Notable Latin Writers of the Early and Middle Ages Immediately upon the appearance of that poem in print, the author was urged by scholarly friends, both clerical and lay, lovers, like himself, of the fine old church songs, to try his hand at others, especially those used for liturgical purposes and found in the Breviary and Missal. The more of these translations that appeared, the more popular they seemed to become. The very act of translating afforded a singular pleas ure and exhilaration of spirit. In a short time the number of English renderings on the author's hands became so great, and the requests of friends to collect them in a volume, so urgent, that the present work is the result. They cry aloud, all void of fear; Greek, Roman and barbarian hear; The word of God in every tongue They utter, speaking loud and clear. Book excerpt: This collection offers the first English translation of the oldest known Christian hymnal, a book of hymns which was compiled in Jerusalem during the later 4th or early 5th century. The First Christian Hymnal offers an unmatched resource for understanding the development of early Christian worship and piety, as well as the transmission of Christian doctrine to the unlettered. For too long, this invaluable collection has been almost completely ignored by scholars of early Christianity, having survived only in an Old Georgian translation.

Book excerpt: This book offers the first English translation of the earliest Christian hymnal, a little-known and overlooked text that preserves the sacred songs of Jerusalem’s Christian communities during the late fourth or early fifth century. This hymnal, known as the Jerusalem Georgian Chantbook, preserves the hymnography of the Jerusalem churches from a crucial moment in early Christian history, when Christianity was transitioning from a small minority faith into the faith of an empire. This book presents the hymns that were used for regular Sunday worship. These hymns not only are the oldest part of the collection, but they also would have had the most influence in forming the faith of Jerusalem’s congregations.

This volume is a translation of The Odes of Solomon, a collection of early Christian hymns or odes; some are obviously Christian, others perhaps Jewish. The beauty of these poems is a tribute to the depth of spirituality in early communities of Christians, some of whom were perhaps also Jews or converted Jews. Professor Charlesworth offers an inviting introduction and a translation of this work that is both engaging and true to the original languages. The Index of Ancient Sources provides the reader access to the wide range of references in the notes.

After the major church councils from Nicaea to Chalcedon brought clarification and definition to Christological doctrines, the hymns began to express clearly this belief in Jesus as truly God and truly human." "Father Liderbach shows that pre-Nicaean hymns inductively held in tension both the full humanity of Jesus and his more-than-human status. Then during the councils from Nicaea to Chalcedon, deductive doctrine held sway in the new hymn compositions. But the final definition by Chalcedon encouraged new hymns in which humanity and divinity are once again held in experiential tension according to the "rule of faith" of the earliest period."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From its beginnings in the Bible, Christian hymnology has fulfilled three functions -- praise, recital and teaching of the Myth, and collective and personal adoration as well as the foundation and worship of the church. In Hymns and the Christian Myth Lionel Adey demonstrates that over the centuries shifts emphasizing particular elements of the Christian faith accord with the interests and concerns of the times in which the hymns were composed. Using a broad range of texts, Adey deals with major themes of every period from biblical times to the early twentiet century. In tracing the changes in representation of the Father, Son, Holy Spirit and Four Last Things in early and medieval Latin hymns, post-Reformation chorales and psalm-based hymns, and English hymns from the time of Watts, the book shows an increasing sense of personal response to the Incarnation and Passion of Christ and of participation in His redemptive work. Chapters on hymnody of the Nativity and Passion illustrate the tendency of monastic poets (the Learned tradition) to focus on dogma, mystery, and paradox, and carolists (the Popular tradition) to convey devotional tenderness. Those on hymnody of the Holy Spirit illustrate a shift through the medieval period from representing pentecostal events to exploring their spiritual meaning. During the Reformation and the Evangelical Revival, the weight of hymnody shifts first to the Father and then to the Son's Passion and Atonement, applied personally and inwardly re-lived by the convert. Most consistently, hymnic representations of the Last Things shift their focus from collective to individual judgement, from death as sleep until the general awakening to death as instant passage to reunion with family and friends. As a hymnologist rather than a theologian, Adey makes no pronouncements on the truth of Christian beliefs. His focus is on how poets have expressed them over two millenia. As such, the book will interest not only students of religion but also those in such related disciplines as literature, psychology, history, and sociology.

The renderings contained in this volume are the product of many happy hours during the past five years. No method was adopted in the work. As the translator waded through the closely printed pages of the Greek offices, what appeared at first sight to be lines worthy of translation were taken up and examined, sometimes to be cast aside again because of some unremovable blemish, at other times to be moulded to the form which they now bear Of the forty-seven pieces, thirty - five appear for the first time in English verse. For the original, the translator has gone to the service - books, and for the most part has confined himself to the hymns which are to be found in the triodion, containing the Lenten services; and in the pentecostarion, in which are found the hymns for the services of Easter and Pentecost. A few specimens are also given from other offices, particularly that for Christmas. Renderings from the work of the earlier Greek hymn-writers are added at the end of this volume; but, unlike the hymns of the Church service-books, these hymns originally are in the classical measures, and illustrate the work of the best Christian poets, who in some cases wrote extensively.
