My object is not to discuss the position and religious beliefs of the Irish Church, but to show the practical effect of its influence on the daily life of the people. There will always be questions connected with the discipline and doctrines of the Irish Church which will be answered differently according to the stand-point from which we set out to examine them. So much attention has been concentrated upon these questions, that it would sometimes seem as though the whole history of this most interesting period of the nations life were supposed to be dependant on the solution that is given to them. Meanwhile, the clear and fascinating picture of the social life of the time, given in the lives of the early saints, and the remarkable developments in the national character and conditions consequent on their teaching and system of things, have been lost sight of. From a purely historical point of view, a clear grasp of these changes and conditions is essential, and it is on these that we have fixed our attention. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early Christian Architecture in Ireland You will remember that about two years ago Margaret Freeman, asking our aid for the sufferers in Servia, reminded us of a passage in the "Vision of Piers Ploughman" which, I think, workers in other fields may use. The poet tells us of a certain company journeying on a pilgrimage in search of Truth. Ignorant of the path, they ask for aid and guidance of the ploughman, whose answer is that they must wait till he has "eeried" and sown his half acre e'er he can "wende" with them "and the way teche;" and a veiled lady in the company answers - "This were a long lettyng! ... What sholde we wommen Wercke the while?" This question, asked some five hundred years ago by one who had the strength to wait, now stirs in the hearts of many of us women in the present day, and it may be well for us to think over the answer that was given. These "lovely ladies with their long fingers" were to work their "churches to honour," while also to take heed how the needy and the naked do lie, and to cast them clothes. "For so commaundeth Truthe," and so "for the Lordes love of Hevene" doth the woman help man to work "wightliche." With this humble yet lofty aim of helpfulness we women need not fear stepping outside our sphere. Many and various are the ways by which we may help, not only in the honouring of our Church, but in the giving of food and raiment. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early Christian Art in Ireland, Vol. 1 The subject of the following chapters is what has been often mis-named Celtic, anglo-saxon, or Runic Art, whereas the style is Irish. The term Celtic belongs to the arts of bronze and gold and enamel practised in Britain before the Roman occupa tion, and in Ireland before the introduction of Christianity in the fifth century. It also embraces the great stone forts that line the western coasts of the country, such as Dun Aengus and Dun Conor, as well as the chambered tombs of New Grange. The late Celtic style in Great Britain, the bronzes of which are marked by distinct characteristics in decoration, prevailed from about two hundred years before the birth of Christ to the time of the Roman occupation. It lingered to a much later date in Ireland. Early Celtic goes back much farther into a pre historic region in which we cannot trace similar peculiarities of decorative design. The early Christian Art of Ireland may well be termed Scotic as well as Irish, just as the first missionaries from Ireland to the Continent were termed Scots, Ireland having borne the name of Scotia for many centuries before it was trans ferred to North Britain; and foreign chroniclers of the ninth century speak of Hibernia, island of the Scots, when referring to events in Ireland regarding which corresponding entries are found in the annals of that countryfi.
