Book Synopsis Colonial Australian Women Poets by : Katie Hansord
Download or read book Colonial Australian Women Poets written by Katie Hansord and published by Anthem Press. This book was released on 2021-01-08 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My book traces the significant poetic and political contributions made by non-canonical women poets, situating women's poetry both in colonial Australian print culture and in wider imperial and transnational contexts. Women poets in colonial Australia have tended to be represented as marginal and isolated figures or absent. This study intervenes by demonstrating an alternative networked tradition of transnational feminist poetics and politics beyond and around emergent masculine nationalism, particularly within newspapers and periodical print culture. Without the inclusion of periodical literature, women’s poetry in Australia during the colonial period would appear to have been fairly limited. When periodical literature is taken into account, this picture is radically altered, and poets emerge as consistent contributors, often across a variety of newspapers and journals, who were well-known, influential and connected with political figures and literary circles. In examining this poetry in the original context of the newspapers and journals, the political intervention and the reception of that poetry is made much more apparent.
Download or read book Networked Language written by Philip Mead and published by Australian Scholary Publishing. This book was released on 2008 with total page 556 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A revelation in literary criticism, Philip Mead's Networked Language offers absorbing new perspectives on Australian poetry and its cultural life. This study presents new ways of understanding Australian poetry, drawing on an equal fascination with the artifice of poetry and the complexity of culture. It is about the ways poetry changes in relation to its social, political and historical contexts, the way poetic communities and the readerships of poetry have changed through history, and continue to change in the present.

Book Synopsis Poems the Size of Photographs by : Les Murray
Download or read book Poems the Size of Photographs written by Les Murray and published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux. This book was released on 2015-09-29 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brief, that place in the year when a blossoming pear tree with its sweet laundered scent reinhabits wooden roads that arch and diverge up into electronic snow city. --"Brief, That Place in the Year" In Poems The Size of Photographs, Les Murray deftly maneuvers through familiar themes--the local terrain of the Australian people, politics, and landscape, as well as the terrain that is harder to render tangible: history, myth, and symbol. As if trying to find the fissure through which to crack open his subject matter, Murray has sharpened his form to an ideogrammatic brevity. Each snapshot-like poem in this volume develops before the reader's very eyes, as the initially observed object or moment in time changes meaning and grows in complexity and resonance line by line.

Download or read book The Striped World written by Emma Jones and published by Faber & Faber. This book was released on 2010-12-09 with total page 73 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With their tidal imagination, the poems in this debut collection sweep between old worlds and new, seeking the lost and recovering the found among shipwrecks, underwater zoos and discovered lands. Emma Jones brings her inventive worlds dramatically to life in a series of vividly distilled meetings - of settlers and indigenous peoples, of seawaters and shore, of humanity and the wilds of nature. Here, tigers stalk the captive and the free, while Death encounters his own double and Daphne tells of her new leaves, 'They sing, and make the world.' The same might be said of the poems themselves in this restless and memorable search for belonging.
