Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brief, tuneful melodies arranged for intermediate flutists and guitarists from early American (1817) popular music. Written in standard notation, these delightful arrangements feature collections of popular melodies from that era as well as airs and dances. In keeping with performance practice of the traditional music played during this time, these arrangements are organized into sets of pieces as they may have been performed during this era. the sets include jigs, slow airs and marches as well as melodies that were popular from the continent. These arrangements are appropriate both for background music as well as public concert performance. the arrangements are derived from a book of flute melodies entitled "Riley's Flute Melodies." Published in 1816 and 1817, this book was possibly used as jazz musicians use lead sheets to develop spontaneous arrangements of pieces depending upon the occasion and the musicians at hand. the guitar arrangements were modeled upon existing guitar practice during that time and use idiomatic guitar devices such as pizzicato and harmonics to provide an imaginative underpinning for the melodies. Many of the arrangements give equal treatment to both the guitar as a harmonic and melodic instrument.

Inside you will find rousing camp meeting songs, sentimental expressions of a deep-rooted faith, and gospel oriented hymns with an old-time music flavor. In preparing this collection I felt the sincere and solid faith of America’s “revivalist era”, staunchly embedded in the rural and southern regions of America, but also in the dedicated inner city missions founded in sprawling urban centers. These solos will bring joy, exuberance, nostalgia and a renewed sense of commitment to any worship celebration. They serve as a vehicle for and witness to the Christian faith.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Agustín Pío Barrios (1885-1944), known as Mangoré, was a virtuoso classical guitarist who rarely appeared in public alongside other musicians. The body of work he produced was exclusively for solo guitar with no chamber music whatsoever. This book, Barrios for Flute and Guitar, is the first publication to feature Barrios' music arranged for guitar and flute. Author, guitarist and music historian Rico Stover and his wife, flutist Jananne Lovett (1943-2016), collaborated in recording an outstanding album of guitar and flute arrangements of Barrios' music; three of which are presented in this book: Aconquija (Aire de Quena), Julia Florida (Barcarola) and Danza Paraguaya. Stover writes in his Preface: "The three works featured here are exemplary of [Barrios'] ability to synthesize Latin-American and European musical/cultural elements into a new and fully integrated whole that yields a novel and pleasurable listening experience." Written in standard notation with downloadable audio and a separate flute part, Mel Bay Publications proudly presents, Barrios for Flute and Guitar. Includes access to online audio.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With this collection of 26 folk hymns, author Peter Irvine brings shape-note music into the home, and provides adaptable music for a variety of instrumental ensembles. This format allows for instruments such as the mountain dulcimer, Native American or transverse flute, penny whistle, fiddle, mandolin, guitar, and so forth. Anyone can play shape-note music, even when Sacred Harp gatherings or "singings" are not easily accessible. The hymns in this collection are drawn from various classic shape-note sources like Southern Harmony (1835) and The Sacred Harp (1844). Presented in lead-sheet format (melody, chords, and lyrics), and written in keys accessible to all C instruments and several D instruments such as the penny whistle and mountain dulcimer, the material offers plenty of arrangements. Hymns can be sung by a soloist, in unison by a small group with chordal accompaniment, or a mixed ensemble.
