Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This early work by Earl Derr Biggers was originally published in 1930 and we are now republishing it with a brand new introductory biography. "Charlie Chan Carries On" is the fifth novel in the Charlie Chan series. Inspector Duff, a Scotland Yard detective and friend of Chan's, first introduced in Behind That Curtain, is pursuing a murderer on an around-the-world voyage; so far, there have been murders in London, France, Italy and Japan. While his ship is docked in Honolulu, the detective is shot and wounded by his quarry; though he survives, he is unable to continue with the cruise, and Chan takes his place instead. Earl Derr Biggers was born on 26th August 1884 in Warren, Ohio, USA. Biggers received his further education at Harvard University, where he developed a reputation as a literary rebel, preferring the popular modern authors, such as Rudyard Kipling and Richard Harding Davis to the established figures of classical literature. Following in their footsteps upon graduating, he himself began a career as a popular writer, penning humorous articles and reviews for the Boston Traveler. While on holiday in Hawaii, Biggers heard tales of a real-life Chinese detective operating in Honolulu, named Chang Apana. This inspired him to create his most enduring legacy in the character of super-sleuth Charlie Chan. The first Chan story "The House Without a Key" (1925) was published as a serialised story in the Saturday Evening Post and then released as a novel in the same year. Biggers went on to write five more Chan novels and all were licensed for movie adaptations by Fox Films. These films were hugely popular with several different actors taking the lead role of Chan. Eventually; over 40 films were produced featuring the character. Biggers only saw the early on-screen successes of Charlie Chan due to his death at the age of only 48 from a heart attack in April 1933.

Book excerpt: This collection of early work by Earl Derr Biggers was originally published between 1929 and 1932 and we are now republishing it with a brand new introductory biography. "The Charlie Chan Collection - Volume II" contains the final three colourful tales of Charlie Chan. In "The Black Camel" we are introduced to Hollywood star (Shelah Fane), who is stopping in Hawaii after she finished shooting a film on location in Tahiti. She is murdered in the pavilion of her renter house in Waikiki during her stay. In "Charlie Chan Carries On," Chan takes the place of Inspector Duff, a Scotland Yard detective and friend of Chan's, who is injured whilst pursuing a murderer on an around-the-world voyage. "Keeper of the Keys" is the sixth and final mystery novel in the Charlie Chan series. The setting of the novel is rural California, where Chan has been invited as a houseguest. Earl Derr Biggers was born on 26th August 1884 in Warren, Ohio, USA. Book excerpt: Behind That Curtain (1928) is the third novel in the Charlie Chan series of mystery novels by Earl Derr Biggers. It is set almost exclusively in California (as opposed to Chan's native Hawaii), and tells the story of the former head of Scotland Yard, a detective who is pursuing the long-cold trail of a murderer. Fifteen years ago, a London solicitor was killed in circumstances in which the only clue was a pair of Chinese slippers, which he apparently donned just before his death. Sir Frederic Bruce has been following the trail of the killer ever since. He has also been interested in what appears to be a series of disappearing women around the world, which has some connection to the disappearance of a woman named Eve Durand in rural India also fifteen years ago. Just when it seems he might finally solve the murder case, at a dinner party to which a number of important and mysterious guests have been invited, Inspector Bruce is killed -- and was last seen wearing a pair of Chinese slippers, which have vanished. It is left to Chan to solve the case and tie up all loose ends.

Book excerpt: " Return to the Charlie Chan Mystery Series with Earl Bigger's fantastic sophomore outing, The Chinese Parrot. After the events of The House Without a Key, Charlie Chan is ready for a vacation. But before he can relax in the Golden State he must follow through on a promise he made to an old friend-transporting her priceless pearl necklace to its new owner. Accompanying Bob Eden, son of the jeweler who brokered the deal, Chan will stop at nothing to ensure the necklace reaches its final destination, even if that means picking up a mystery or two along the way. Based in part on the life of Chinese Hawaiian detective Chang Apana, Earl Derr Bigger's Charlie Chan Mystery Series was originally created to combat the negative ""Yellow Peril"" stereotypes of Asian Americans that were prevalent in the early twentieth century. With The Chinese Parrot (1926), Biggers delivers an intricate puzzle full of adventure and romance that further expands on the mythos of Charlie Chan. "

While his ship is docked in Honolulu, the detective is shot and wounded by his quarry; though he survives, he is unable to continue with the cruise, and Chan takes his place instead.Chief Inspector Duff, of Scotland Yard, was walking down Piccadilly in the rain. Faint and far away, beyond St. James's Park, he had just heard Big Ben on the Houses of Parliament strike the hour of ten. It was the night of February 6, 1930. One must keep in mind the clock and the calendar where chief inspectors are concerned, although in this case the items are relatively unimportant. They will never appear as evidence in court.Though naturally of a serene and even temperament, Inspector Duff was at the moment in a rather restless mood. Only that morning a long and tedious case had come to an end as he sat in court and watched the judge, in his ominous black cap, sentence an insignificant, sullen-looking little man to the scaffold. Well, that was that, Duff had thought. A cowardly murderer, with no conscience, no human feeling whatever. And what a merry chase he had led Scotland Yard before his final capture. But perseverance had won--that, and a bit of the Duff luck. Getting hold of a letter the murderer had written to the woman in Battersea Park Road, seeing at once the double meaning of a harmless little phrase, seizing upon it and holding on until he had the picture complete. That had done it. All over now. What next?
