Book excerpt: This is the paperback edition. The hardback edition of this book is available, for the same price, at: www.IrelandsFirst.com I have been passionate about raptors ever since I can remember. I don't know what it is about them that attracts me, but this fascination brought me to Mountshannon, Lough Derg, County Clare to photograph the first Irish White Tailed Sea Eagles in over 100 years. This historic event was a huge eye-opener for me. I'd seen lots of birds of prey in my life, but never like this. I was able to see the same couple every day going about their business, building a nest, mating and raising young. From the beginning, this story just got better and better, until an unforeseen event made my heart sink. I thought it was all over, but it wasn't. Once again, the story picked up and became a huge success for Ireland's first White Tailed Sea Eagles in 100 years. This story needs to be read to understand how amazing these parents are, especially with all the hardships and heart-stopping moments that they had to deal with. I truly loved filming, photographing and documenting this historic event and I am very proud to have been a part of it. I really hope you enjoy this photographic book. I wish these magnificent birds all the luck in the world. I hope that they live long and in a few years come back to Lough Derg to reproduce. Hopefully, I'll be there to film them!

Download or read book Ireland written by Michael Viney and published by Smithsonian Institution. This book was released on 2014-10-28 with total page 421 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ireland conjures up images of nature's majesty: sweeping coastlines, rolling green hills, and secluded peat bogs and marshlands. A place of legendary beauty, it is also a land with a rich natural history. Michael Viney invites us to discover the geologic forces that created the island, peer into the famous bone caves that hold unique clues about animals from long ago, and experience the dramatic scenes of the cliff-lined coast and tempestuous seas. Viney begins deep in the past, when rivers of molten rock and enormous glaciers stripped the land bare. Soon after the glaciers retreated, the island was transformed into a fresh, new landscape, home to an intriguing variety of plants and animals, and an environment that has cultivated a rich human history and inspired countless myths. Infused with the lyricism of Irish prose, Ireland: A Smithsonian Natural History is indispensable for anyone seeking to understand the natural beauty of the Emerald Isle.

Download or read book Life in Ireland written by Conor W. O'Brien and published by Merrion Press. This book was released on 2021-04-22 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the story of life in Ireland – a story half a billion years in the making. With its castles, crannogs and passage tombs, Ireland is a land where history looms large, but the saga of life on this island dates back millions of years before the first people set foot here. In Life in Ireland, Conor O’Brien guides the reader on a journey around the island to explore the history of natural life here, from the Jurassic Coast of Antrim to the great Ice Age bone-beds of Cork. Along the way, we’ll meet some of the astonishing creatures to have called Ireland home through the ages: shelled monsters; huge marine lizards; armoured dinosaurs; giant deer; mighty mammoths. Vital strands in the story of life on Earth have left their mark here, including some of the first creatures to crawl onto land or take to the wing. This epic journey will take us from the first fossils to the present day, to see how our wildlife has adapted to the human age and explore what the future might hold for life in Ireland.
