Book excerpt: Tom Lasino, army veteran and college physics professor, has his mundane life turned upside down when he is contacted by a CIA agent. Tom is recruited to become part of a top-secret mission. He receives a briefing aboard a yacht anchored off Maryland's Tilghman Island. At the briefing Tom discovers that the CIA agent is Jennifer Blake, a long ago friend with whom he had lost all contact. The CIA, Tom learns, has uncovered a terrorist nuclear plot that will be unleashed somewhere in the United States, and Kurt Hansen, a former nuclear artillery soldier turned criminal soon to be released from Leavenworth, is behind the plot. Tom, after much weapons and martial arts training in addition to intense intelligence briefings, is inserted into Leavenworth prison as a prisoner. He is to befriend Hansen, learn what he can about Hansen's plot, and connect with him again when they are released from prison in a month. In prison Tom learns how much hatred Hansen has for the United States and it's government. Upon their release Tom continues to play the role, but also begins to develop an intense relationship with Jennifer. Tom and the entire team of six use their collective wits to discover the location and details of Hansen's plot, but their discoveries come at a high cost for all the key players. The many twists and turns in Eagles Don't Die keep you guessing to the very end. This fictional story, which brings the reader face to face with the reality of terror and homeland security, is based on an incident that actually occurred in 1971 involving a nuclear military device. Today's world events make this a very timely tale. Eagles Don't Die won First Prize in the Action-Adventure Category of the 2006 Maryland Writers' Association International Novel Contest.

Book excerpt: Best Books of the Month: Wall Street Journal, Kirkus Reviews From the Pulitzer Prize–winning author of The Gulf, a sweeping cultural and natural history of the bald eagle in America. The bald eagle is regal but fearless, a bird you’re not inclined to argue with. For centuries, Americans have celebrated it as “majestic” and “noble,” yet savaged the living bird behind their national symbol as a malicious predator of livestock and, falsely, a snatcher of babies. Taking us from before the nation’s founding through inconceivable resurgences of this enduring all-American species, Jack E. Davis contrasts the age when native peoples lived beside it peacefully with that when others, whether through hunting bounties or DDT pesticides, twice pushed Haliaeetus leucocephalus to the brink of extinction. Filled with spectacular stories of Founding Fathers, rapacious hunters, heroic bird rescuers, and the lives of bald eagles themselves—monogamous creatures, considered among the animal world’s finest parents—The Bald Eagle is a much-awaited cultural and natural history that demonstrates how this bird’s wondrous journey may provide inspiration today, as we grapple with environmental peril on a larger scale.

Book excerpt: The award-winning author of Clash of Eagles and Eagle in Exile concludes his masterly alternate-history saga of the Roman invasion of North America in this stunning novel. Roman Praetor Gaius Marcellinus came to North America as a conqueror, but after meeting with defeat at the hands of the city-state of Cahokia, he has had to forge a new destiny in this strange land. In the decade since his arrival, he has managed to broker an unstable peace between the invading Romans and a loose affiliation of Native American tribes known as the League. But invaders from the west will shatter that peace and plunge the continent into war: The Mongol Horde has arrived and they are taking no prisoners. As the Mongol cavalry advances across the Great Plains leaving destruction in its path, Marcellinus and his Cahokian friends must summon allies both great and small in preparation for a final showdown. Alliances will shift, foes will rise, and friends will fall as Alan Smale brings us ever closer to the dramatic final battle for the future of the North American continent. Praise for Eagle and Empire “Smale delivers in spades . . . the best of the trilogy. Highly recommended.”—Historical Novels Review “The pace . . . is breathless and the action relentless. . . . A satisfying culmination to the adventures of a Roman warrior in the New World.”—Kirkus Reviews “The final volume of Smale’s Clash of Eagles trilogy is relentless, with characters and readers hardly getting a breath before the next threat comes crashing down. . . . Smale’s hard-hitting and satisfying conclusion will be a must for his readers, as the trilogy will be for any fan of alternate history.”—Publishers Weekly (starred review) “[Eagle and Empire] had awesome worldbuilding, worthy and interesting characters, and a great plot. . . . Altogether, a very satisfying journey.”—The Nameless Zine

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: (FAQ). If the Beatles wrote the soundtrack of the swinging '60s, then the Eagles did the same for the cynical '70s. The story of the Eagles is also the story of most artists of their time the drugs, the music, the excesses, and the piles of cash. But the Eagles took it to the limit. And in Don Henley and Glenn Frey they had two songwriters who intuitively understood and accurately portrayed the changing America they lived in. They perfected the California sound, shifted power from record company to artist, and pioneered album-oriented rock. Eagles songs of the period are as memorable as any ever written, and their most popular album, Hotel California , became a timeless record of '70s decadence. In The Eagles FAQ , music critic Andrew Vaughan brings an insider's view into the various chapters of the group's fascinating history. He shows how they blended the best folk, rock, and country sounds of the '60s into a worldwide soundtrack of the '70s while challenging the industry status quo with a new business model. The story of their rise, fall, and rebirth is all here their mega-selling smashes, their tensions and breakups, the band members' solo work, and their triumphant reunion and continued place at the top of the rock-and-roll tree.

These one-liners can cut through the froth to the heart of a topic with wisdom, common sense, and often humor. They may give comfort to a hurting person, or challenge a teenager as he or she struggles to deal with this world. With these gems, she has guided and instructed three sons and eleven grandchildren and their friends. She is now working on seven great-grandchildren. Friends and family have enjoyed and have been challenged by her kitchen bar stool ministry. Hopefully, these gems will give the reader a laugh or two, or as the Christian comedian Ken Davis would say, "Lighten up and live!" If you are a believer in Jesus Christ, these gems may provide some food for thought as you live your life and raise your children. If you have not yet come to a saving relationship with the living Christ, hopefully some of these gems will challenge you to contemplate your relationship with Him, and hence your future beyond this limited time you have on this earth.

Book excerpt: “Stand up, old man!”, Agon said to himself. “Go to your grave for you are not dead yet… You have lived like an eagle, so die like an eagle! Don’t let those coward sparrows make fun of you…” The Old Agon’s wings were weaker, feathers shed and talons blunted. He could neither fly nor eat. He was either going to die or be reborn out of the ashes. It wouldn’t be appropriate for the lord of the sky to cry in despair. Even his death should have been legendary. Because an eagle would never hunt flies! Agon neither let sparrows make fun of him nor hunted flies…

Book excerpt: Readers familiar with Lia Purpura’s highly praised essay collections—Becoming, On Looking, and Rough Likeness—will know she’s a master of observation, a writer obsessed with the interplay between humans and the things they see. The subject matter of All the Fierce Tethers is wonderfully varied, both low (muskrats, slugs, a stained quilt in a motel room) and lofty (shadows, prayer, the idea of beauty). In “Treatise Against Irony,” she counters this all-too modern affliction with ferocious optimism and intelligence: “The opposite of irony is nakedness.” In “My Eagles,” our nation’s symbol is viewed from all angles—nesting, flying, politicized, preserved. The essay in itself could be a small anthology. And, in a fresh move, Purpura turns to her own, racially divided Baltimore neighborhood, where a blood stain appears on a street separating East (with its Value Village) and West (with its community garden). Finalist for the National Book Critics Award, winner of the Pushcart Prize, Lia Purpura returns with a collection both sustaining and challenging.

Book excerpt: A major new exploration of the economics of animal exploitation and a practical roadmap for how we can use the marketplace to promote the welfare of all living creatures, from the renowned animal-rights advocate Wayne Pacelle, President/CEO of the Humane Society of the United States and New York Times bestselling author of The Bond. In the mid-nineteenth century, New Bedford, Massachusetts was the whaling capital of the world. A half-gallon of sperm oil cost approximately $1,400 in today’s dollars, and whale populations were hunted to near extinction for profit. But with the advent of fossil fuels, the whaling industry collapsed, and today, the area around New Bedford is instead known as one of the best places in the world for whale watching. This transformation is emblematic of a new sort of economic revolution, one that has the power to transform the future of animal welfare. In The Humane Economy, Wayne Pacelle, President/CEO of the Humane Society of the United States, explores how our everyday economic decisions impact the survival and wellbeing of animals, and how we can make choices that better support them. Though most of us have never harpooned a sea creature, clubbed a seal, or killed an animal for profit, we are all part of an interconnected web that has a tremendous impact on animal welfare, and the decisions we make—whether supporting local, not industrial, farming; adopting a rescue dog or a shelter animal instead of one from a “puppy mill”; avoiding products that compromise the habitat of wild species; or even seeing Cirque du Soleil instead of Ringling Brothers—do matter. The Humane Economy shows us how what we do everyday as consumers can benefit animals, the environment, and human society, and why these decisions can make economic sense as well.
