Download or read book Tafilet written by Walter Harris and published by . This book was released on 1895 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1895, this book recounts the author's 1893 expedition to the Tafilet oasis in Morocco, one of the largest oases in the world. Previously largely inaccessible (before the invention of the motor car it was at least 10 days' journey south of Fez across the Atlas mountains and the Sahara), Harris took advantage of the Sultan of Morocco Mulai el Hassen's decision to pay a visit to the oasis during the autumn of that year. Throughout the book the author describes in great detail the places he visited and the people he met along the way. There are detailed descriptions of Marrakesh and the villages of the Atlas Mountains, as well as ruminations on the differences between the Arabs and the Berber tribes, and the situation of the Jews. Crossing the desert, Harris reached the Sultan's camp at the edge of the oasis, and there follows a detailed description of the activities of the Sultan and his retinue, their dealings with the troublesome tribes of the area, and accounts of the history, geography and people of Tafilet. The book concludes with the author's return journey to the north, and an account of the events following the Sultan's own return from the oasis and his subsequent death. Painting as it does a vivid picture of the state of Morocco at the very end of the 19th century, Walter B. Harris's Tafilet is sure to be of great interest to all those fascinated by the history of this unique and diverse North African country.

Book Synopsis Wondrous Encounters by : Richard Rohr
Download or read book Wondrous Encounters written by Richard Rohr and published by Franciscan Media. This book was released on 2010-10-18 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rohr's meditations on the daily readings of Lent are not for the sake of mere information, or even for academia (although the author hopes it will satisfy both), but for the sake of our transformation into our original "image and likeness," which is the very image of God. What always and finally matters for all of us is encounter! Father Rohr begins each meditation with a single title or phrase that sums up the point. Then he offers the meditation followed by key passages from the readings. He ends each meditation with a Starter Prayer that invites you to self-disclosure and to enter the wondrous divine dialogue with clarity, insight—and holy desire! "There are two moments that matter. One is when you know that your one and only life is absolutely valuable and alive. The other is when you know your life, as presently lived, is entirely pointless and empty. You need both of them to keep you going in the right direction. Lent is about both. The first such moment gives you energy and joy by connecting you with your ultimate Source and Ground. The second gives you limits and boundaries, and a proper humility, so you keep seeking the Source and Ground and not just your small self."—From the Introduction
