Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dyspepsia I have been led by the suggestions made to me by a number of my dyspeptic patients, to print the accompanying pages, in the hope that a more rational view of this disease may be aided thereby. Any one who reads this with the expectation of finding some universal panacea recommended for the cure of every case, will be disappointed. My aim has been to point out as clearly and concisely as I can what dyspepsia is, why it is such a complicated disease, and what the rational indications are for its treatment. I do not claim originality for all my views, but that they are the conclusions that any reasonable physician will come to, who makes a special study of dyspepsia. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Diseases of the Stomach: Being the Third Edition of the "Diagnosis and Treatment of the Varieties of Dyspepsia" Thirst is a sensation which is ordinarily even less than hunger referred directly to the stomach, being mainly felt in the fauces.' It may, moreover, be relieved by the introduction of fluid directly into the blood,3 but, on the other hand, it may be excited by irri tants introduced into the stomach. It is almost invariably present in pyrexial conditions, and in any state involving an excessive loss of fluid by any of the secretions; hence it occurs in a very marked form in diabetes, and is more felt in hot than in cold seasons. In dependently, however, of the causes here enumerated, thirst is a very constant concomitant of irritative conditions of the stomach, when it usually appears some hours after a meal, and occasionally, when other causes, and particularly habit, can be excluded, it forms a valuable adjuvant in the diagnosis of these states. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bronchitis, and Kindred Diseases It is an affection of the voice-making organs, which are at the top or beginning of the wind-pipe, answering to that moveable protuberance in the throat, in the act of swallowing, familiarly called Adam's Apple, very prominent in men, less so in women. The one great distinguishing symptom in throat-ail, present in every case, absent in none, is an alteration of the voice, its tone is not so clear as usual; or to make it so, there is an instinctive effort by hawking or hem ming to remove something which is felt to be an obstacle to a full and free utterance. In the first stages of the disease, nothing perceptible is cleared away. When farther advanced, a little mucus, or pearly phlegm is brought up, not half a tea-spoonful, perhaps but as the malady progresses, this pearly phlegm becomes thicker, more and more yellow, and in greatly increased quantities, from a tea-spoonful to twenty or more in the course of four and twenty hours, when it uniformly terminates fatally. Of this disease, ending in consumption, the celebrated clerical orator, Edward Irving, died. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dyspepsia: Its Varieties and Treatment The scheme upon which the present work is based was drawn up by the author more than sixteen years ago. Only a few chapters had been written, however, before it became evident that the subject was infinitely more complicated than had been imagined, and the manuscript was accordingly put aside until sufficient knowledge had been gained to warrant a fresh attempt. In the meanwhile a series of special researches were undertaken upon the etiology of the various forms of dyspepsia, and monographs dealing with such cognate subjects as Disorders of Digestion in Childhood, Ulcer of the Stomach, and Cancer of the Stomach were published. The present volume is the outcome of the clinical experience gained by the personal examination and treatment of more than eighteen thousand persons suffering from indigestion; but since the data thus obtained proved too unwieldy for analysis, the statistical enquiries quoted in the text were confined to one thousand examples of the complaint, five hundred of which were examined in hospital and five hundred in private practice. These were taken in the order in which they came under observation and were all subjected to the same methods of investigation, so that the results probably indicate with a fair degree of accuracy the relative frequency of the different types of dyspepsia in general and special practice, respectively. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On the Diagnosis and Treatment of the Varieties of Dyspepsia: Considered in Relation to the Pathological Origin of the Different Forms of Indigestion The use of purgative and tonic remedies in the treatment of dyspeptic disturbances, is the direct result of such views as the foregoing regarding their nature and origin; and the manner in which either of these classes of remedies has been employed has depended on the predominance, for the most part, of one or other of the hypotheses to which I have here alluded. It is true, indeed, that many writers since the days of Celsus and Morgagni have recognised various organic diseases of the stomach. The theories, however, which they entertained respecting the origin of these and of their influence on digestion, tended in great measure to a one-sidedness both in pathology and treatment, and rendered the distinction and diagnosis of the disorders of digestion a matter of considerable difficulty. Many of the classifications of the disturbances of digestion included under the title of dyspepsia, have, on the other hand, been based upon an ontological foundation, by which this condition was regarded as a distinct disease, and the place consequently assigned to it in nosological treatises has varied with the pathological views entertained by the authors of these systems. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Full and Accurate Account of the Method of Curing Dyspepsia, Discovered and Practiced by Dr. O. Halsted, of New York: With Observations on Diseases of the Digestive Organs We seldom, however, hear of persons dying with Dyspepsia. The reason of this seems to be, that when its progress has continued for any length of time, the disorders of organs secondarily affected, (the lungs or liver, for instance) are so predominant that they swallow up the original disease. This is not always the case, and we now and then see persons expire, as it were, from inanition, the powers of the stomach being completely lost. In this summary, and as we are Well aware, imperfect sketch of a disease, Protean in its symptoms, but in reality single and uniform in its nature, we have enumerated three stages, which may be termed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Treatment of the Diseases of the Stomach and Intestines A few words may be said concerning the division of the subject adopted in this book. There is first a chapter on semeiological technique, in which we have described the principal methods employed for the examination of the contents of the stomach, of the faeces, and of the urine, with a view especially to the diagnosis of dyspeptic conditions. We have limited ourselves to an exposition of the simple elementary details which are indispensable to a good clini cal examination. This is not because the physician al ways ought to or can make researches of this kind but it is by means of them that we have gained what additional knowledge we now possess of the nature of dyspepsia, and one should be able to carry them out, since they alone give us certain information as to the chemical variety of gas tric dyspepsia with which we have to deal. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Stomach: Its Disorders, and How to Cure Them AN eminent comparative anatomist defines an animal as a stomach with various organs appended, a definition which presents in a very clear light the relative importance of. The stomach in the association of the organs and structures which constitute the human as well as the animal body. The stomach must certainly be regarded as the center of the nutritive proc esses of the body, and any derangement of its functions must therefore result in disorder of the entire organism. The close relation between the condition of the stomach and that of the mind has been observed even by the most primitive nations, and has led some of them to regard the stomach as the veritable seat of the soul. There is sound truth in the ancient German adage, As a man eateth, so is he. It may truly be said that disorders of digestion are the most prevalent of all human ills, and investigators within the last twenty years have been making more and more clear the fact that the great majority of diseases are primarily due to derange ment of the digestive processes. The remarkable researches of Professor Bouchard, of Paris, and others, have shown that such diseases as consumption, typhoid fever. And cholera, as well as Bright's disease and analogous maladies, are indirectly, if not directly, due to a disordered condition of the stomach, as the result of which the defenses of the body are broken down, and infection rendered possible. Notwithstanding the great prevalence of stomach disorders, and the large amount of knowledge and experience which have been accumulated by the profession in regard to them within the last few years, it is nevertheless true that no other class of curable disorders has more frequently baffled the best directed efforts of medical practitioners. This is doubtless owing to the imperfect knowledge of the processes of digestion and of the nature of the disorders to which the digestive organs are subject which has prevailed from the earliest times to within a comparatively brief period. Within the last score of years. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
