SR) and neutron spin-echo (NSE) measurements of magnetic-ion correlation times and correlation functions in the spin-glass systems CuMn, AgMn, and AuFe are compared. It is found that the .mu. SR and NSE measurements are in excellent agreement both above and below the spin-glass freezing temperatures. The experimental results are compared to recent theories of spin-glass dynamics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field (H) dependence of the muon longitudinal spin-lattice relaxation rate well below the spin-glass temperature in AgMn is found to obey an algebraic form given by (H)/sup nu-1/, with nu = 0.54 +- 0.05. This suggests that Mn spin correlations decay with time as t−/sup nu/, in agreement with mean field theories of spin-glass dynamics which yield nu less than or equal to 0.5. Near the glass temperature the agreement between the data and theory is not as good.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A number of different microscopic probe techniques have been employed to investigate the onset of the spin-glass state in dilute magnetic alloys. Among these are Moessbauer-effect spectroscopy, neutron scattering, ESR of the impurity spins, host NMR and, most recently, muon spin rotation and depolarization. Spin probes yield information on the microscopic static and dynamic behavior of the impurity spins, and give insight into both the spin freezing process and the nature of low-lying excitations in the ordered state. Microscopic probe experiments in spin glasses are surveyed, and the unique advantages of muon studies are emphasized.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Primarily intended for postgraduate students and researchers in the fields of condensed matter science, chemical physics and material science, who plan to use the muon spin rotation, relaxation amd resonance (#uSR) techniques, this book combines for the first time a detailed discussion of the physical information contained in the measured polarisation functions with real-life examples taken from the literature. It is divided in three main parts. The first part presents some typical results of the application of #uSR and explains the basic principles involved. The second part is the core of this book. It presents a comprehensive discussion of the measured polarisation functions. In the third part we analyse in four chapters selected examples taken from the following fields: diffusion properties of muon and muonium, magnetism, superconductivity, and muonium centres in materials. The book is completed by an epilogue and eight appendices.

Book excerpt: About sixty years ago, the anomalous magnetic response of certain magnetic alloys drew the attention of theoretical physicists. It soon became clear that understanding these systems, now called spin glasses, would give rise to a new branch of statistical physics. As physical materials, spin glasses were found to be as useless as they were exotic. They have nevertheless been recognized as paradigmatic examples of complex systems with applications to problems as diverse as neural networks, amorphous solids, biological molecules, social and economic interactions, information theory and constraint satisfaction problems. This book presents an encyclopaedic overview of the broad range of these applications. More than 30 contributions are compiled, written by many of the leading researchers who have contributed to these developments over the last few decades. Some timely and cutting-edge applications are also discussed. This collection serves well as an introduction and summary of disordered and glassy systems for advanced undergraduates, graduate students and practitioners interested in the topic.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spin glasses are disordered magnetic systems that have led to the development of mathematical tools with an array of real-world applications, from airline scheduling to neural networks. Spin Glasses and Complexity offers the most concise, engaging, and accessible introduction to the subject, fully explaining what spin glasses are, why they are important, and how they are opening up new ways of thinking about complexity. This one-of-a-kind guide to spin glasses begins by explaining the fundamentals of order and symmetry in condensed matter physics and how spin glasses fit into--and modify--this framework. It then explores how spin-glass concepts and ideas have found applications in areas as diverse as computational complexity, biological and artificial neural networks, protein folding, immune response maturation, combinatorial optimization, and social network modeling. Providing an essential overview of the history, science, and growing significance of this exciting field, Spin Glasses and Complexity also features a forward-looking discussion of what spin glasses may teach us in the future about complex systems. This is a must-have book for students and practitioners in the natural and social sciences, with new material even for the experts.

Book excerpt: Muon science is rapidly assuming a central role in scientific and technological studies of the solid state within the disciplines of physics, chemistry, and materials science. Muon Science: Muons in Physics, Chemistry and Materials presents key developments in both theoretical and experimental aspects of muon spin relaxation, rotation, and resonance. Assuming no prior expertise in muon science, the book guides readers from introductory material to the latest developments in the field. The internationally renowned expert contributors cover topics in muon instrumentation and muon science applications that include muon production, beamlines and instrumentation, muonium chemistry, muon catalyzed fusion, fundamental muon physics, ultra-cold muons, magnetism, superconductivity, diffusion, semiconductors, simulations, and data analysis. The book maintains consistent notation and nomenclature throughout as well as cross-referencing and continuity between the contributions. It provides an excellent introduction to both new and experienced muon beam scientists and graduate students wishing to develop their knowledge and understanding of the subject.

Book excerpt: This book aims to describe in simple terms the new area of statistical mechanics known as spin-glasses, encompassing systems in which quenched disorder is the dominant factor. The book begins with a non-mathematical explanation of the problem, and the modern understanding of the physics of the spin-glass state is formulated in general terms. Next, the 'magic' of the replica symmetry breaking scheme is demonstrated and the physics behind it discussed. Recent experiments on real spin-glass materials are briefly described to demonstrate how this somewhat abstract physics can be studied in the laboratory. The final chapters of the book are devoted to statistical models of neural networks. The material here is self-contained and should be accessible to students with a basic knowledge of theoretical physics and statistical mechanics. It has been used for a one-term graduate lecture course at the Landau Institute for Theoretical Physics.
