Quantum dots embedded in a micropillar cavity are investigated by measuring the spectra, and by performing time-resolved measurements. The enhancement of the spontaneous decay of the quantum dot is measured to 18.9 with a resonant lifetime of 28.1 ps under the assumption of an exponential decay. A model is constructed with measurable parameters, and the calculated decay curves are not exponential. As a result the mean decay rate, which coincides with the exponential rate for an exponential decay, is calculated for the measured rates. A large deviation is seen, with an enhancement of the mean decay rate of 9.1 with a resonant lifetime of 56.5 ps. The non-exponential decay of the quantum dot is caused by non- Markovian processes in the dot-cavity interaction. Furthermore, the second order coherence is measured to determine the quality of the single-photon emission, and two-photon interference measurements are likewise performed. These measurements show an indistinguishability of 48%. Finally, cavity-assisted resonant excitation of a quantum dot with another quantum dot is demonstrated.

Book excerpt: An understanding of the interaction between light and matter on a quantum level is of fundamental interest and has many applications in optical technologies. The quantum nature of the interaction has recently attracted great attention for applications of semiconductor nanostructures in quantum information processing. Quantum optics with semiconductor nanostructures is a key guide to the theory, experimental realisation, and future potential of semiconductor nanostructures in the exploration of quantum optics.Part one provides a comprehensive overview of single quantum dot systems, beginning with a look at resonance fluorescence emission. Quantum optics with single quantum dots in photonic crystal and micro cavities are explored in detail, before part two goes on to review nanolasers with quantum dot emitters. Light-matter interaction in semiconductor nanostructures, including photon statistics and photoluminescence, is the focus of part three, whilst part four explores all-solid-state quantum optics, crystal nanobeam cavities and quantum-dot microcavity systems. Finally, part five investigates ultrafast phenomena, including femtosecond quantum optics and coherent optoelectronics with quantum dots. With its distinguished editor and international team of expert contributors, Quantum optics with semiconductor nanostructures is an essential guide for all those involved with the research, development, manufacture and use of semiconductors nanodevices, lasers and optical components, as well as scientists, researchers and students. - A key guide to the theory, experimental realisation, and future potential of semiconductor nanostructures in the exploration of quantum optics - Chapters provide a comprehensive overview of single quantum dot systems, nanolasers with quantum dot emitters, and light-matter interaction in semiconductor nanostructures - Explores all-solid-state quantum optics, crystal nanobeam cavities and quantum-dot microcavity systems, and investigates ultrafast phenomena

This book was released on 2016-11-15 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis offers a comprehensive introduction to surface acoustic waves in the quantum regime. It addresses two of the most significant technological challenges in developing a scalable quantum information processor based on spins in quantum dots: (i) decoherence of the electronic spin qubit due to the surrounding nuclear spin bath, and (ii) long-range spin-spin coupling between remote qubits. Electron spins confined in quantum dots (QDs) are among the leading contenders for implementing quantum information processing. To this end, the author pursues novel strategies that turn the unavoidable coupling to the solid-state environment (in particular, nuclear spins and phonons) into a valuable asset rather than a liability.

Book excerpt: A quantum dot is a particle of matter so small that the addition or removal of an electron changes its properties in some useful way. All atoms are quantum dots, but multi-molecular combinations can have this characteristic. In biochemistry, quantum dots are called redox groups. In nanotechnology, they are called quantum bits or qubits. Quantum dots typically have dimensions measured in nanometers, where one nanometer is 10-9 meter or a millionth of a millimetre. The fields of biology, chemistry, computer science, and electronics are all of interest to researchers in nanotechnology. Other applications of quantum dots include nanomachines, neural networks, and high-density memory or storage media. Research is being carried out on nano-crystals, self-assembled dots, and gated structures. This book presents leading-edge research from around the world.
