At this juncture of its demographic transition, it is, however, migration that is destiny for the Kerala population According to the first Kerala Migration Study (1999), migration had provided the single most dynamic factor in the otherwise dismal economic scenario of Kerala in the last quarter of the twentieth century. This Book documents Kerala's deepening socio-economic nexus with the Gulf countries through emigration based on the second Kerala Migration Survey conducted in 2004, funded the South Asian Network of Economic Institutes (SANE) and the special grant from the Centre for Development Studies, Kerala. It provides information on the size, trend, geographical distribution, socio-economic composition of migrants, and remittances sent home by migrants.// Analysis based on this new study indicates that migration is continuing to provide the most dynamic factor in the economic growth of Kerala State in the new century. The new century is likely to see migration encompassing a wider section of the Kerala population and the migration-impact spreading to newer sectors of the Kerala economy. Migrants of the 21st century would be structurally different from those of the 20th century. They would be better qualified and would be occupying higher positions in the job market abroad. The economic and political climate in the State seems to be becoming more receptive to profitable investments in developmental projects on a much larger scale in the coming decades. Emigration is likely to bring in, besides the much-needed capital, entrepreneurship and business leadership for Kerala's development. Migration is poised to determine more closely Kerala's destiny in the socio-economic development in the coming decades.

The goal of this research is to see how much native labour is available in the rural labour market and to look at the current migratory worker structure.Methodology: The methodology used in this study is Descriptive Research, which is mainly concerned with secondary data sources. Books, newspapers, journals, articles, and government websites are used to gather secondary data.Originality: The breadth and function of migrant workers in Kerala's present labour market, as well as the availability of native labour in the casual rural labour market, are all discussed.Value: By examining the sectoral-wise distribution of employment, the study will aid in determining the role of migrants in the Kerala economy.Findings: In India, the rural labour market is shifting away from agriculture and toward secondary and tertiary industries. The overall employment in agriculture is declining every year whereas in the industrial and services sectors there is a gradual increase in the workforce. The lack of manual labourers is a key issue for the government. The influx of migrant workers into Kerala's labour market provided relief to the state's manual labour shortage since they provided a cheaper labour force. Migrant workers play a vital role in the labour supply and play a significant part to the state's economic development by imparting labour for a variety of economic activities that would otherwise be impossible to sustain owing to a labour shortage.Paper Type: Descriptive study.

Kerala is an attractive job market for workers from outside the state because of higher earnings, plentiful employment options, and a scarcity of local labourers. The goal of this article is to look at the availability of casual migrant workers in Kerala's labour market as well as their impact on the state's economy. Also looked at how migrants' financial and social status improves as a result of migration.Design/Methodology/Approach: Descriptive Research was used in this study, which is focused on secondary data sources. Secondary data is gathered through books, newspapers, journals, articles, and government websites.Originality: The influences of migrant workers in the rationalization of the economy are discussed.Value: The study will aid in assessing the financial and social upliftment of migrant workers owing to migration by looking at the availability of migrant workers, labour force participation rate, worker population ratio, and wage rate.Findings: There has been a whopping increase in the number of migrant workers in the labour market of Kerala, it figured out that there were 4,12,849 migrants in 2001 and it soared to 31,50,000 migrants in 2020. It is mostly owing to increased job availability and high remuneration rates, which can be seen even in Kerala's unorganised industry. 60% of migrant workers are employed in construction, 8% in manufacturing, 7% in hotels and restaurants, 2% in trade and 2% in agriculture, with the remaining 23% engaged in other occupations. As a result of migration, people's quality of life increases. By educating people about different cultures, traditions, and languages, it enhances their social lives and encourages intergroup harmony, which in turn helps society as a whole.Paper Type: Descriptive study.

As high-skill immigration from India to mainland Europe is a rather recent phenomenon, the activities of Indian professionals in Europe are under-researched. The findings have wider application in contributing to the policy dialogue on migration and development, specifically to the advantage for developing and emerging economies. The book employs an interdisciplinary, two-fold approach: The first part of the research looks at how international exposure affects the current situation of skilled returnees in India. The second, European, part of the research examines migration policies, labour market regulations and other institutional settings that enable or hinder skilled Indians’ links with the country of origin. Structural differences between the host countries may facilitate different levels of learning opportunities; thus, this book identifies good practices to promote the involvement of Indian skilled diaspora in socio-economic development. In applying the framework of diaspora contributions as well as the return channel to study the impact on India, the book draws on qualitative and quantitative research methods consisting of policy analysis, in-depth interviews with key experts and skilled migrants and on data sets collected specifically for this study.
