Book Synopsis Challenges in Development by : V.V. Alexander
Download or read book Challenges in Development written by V.V. Alexander and published by Northern Book Centre. This book was released on 1993 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book as a prelude to ``NEW SCHOOL OF ECONOMIC THOUGHT'' provides Five Select Essays in a historical dimension on the theme, Challenges in Development that largely by-passed the serious attention of scholars on reasons unaccounted. The dominant paradigms of development have undergone drastic shifts in the recent past. The western or capitalistic model of development, has lost much of its pretence and failed to prove valid in the Third World context. The so called Socialist manifesto also failed as self-fulfilling prophesy, more so with the end of Communist power blocks and increasing disarray and communal conflicts in South-East Asia and particularly the disintegration process that is off-spin in India. These challenges are now emerging into the centre stage of ``Economic Management'' with `Human-Centred Development' as the new logic of market mechanism eclipsing the role of Keynesian paradigm in the emerging global economic order adopting holistic view on development-TELEONOMICS. This book would provide thoughts for further research for those serious scholars who are obsessed with modern economic system management and analysis. Review ``The author has studied the phenomenon of underdevelopment in the Indian context and attributed it to lop-sided development. He does not subscribe to the view that over population is responsible for poverty. The author's contention is that the development strategy India has been following under various plans is elitist-oriented. The author laments: the plan preaches socialism and politics practices capitalism. .... the author argues, even the technical change that has taken place, is not helpful in solving problems of poverty and unemployment. Book Synopsis Social Sector Development and Governance by : Ramesh Chandra Das
Download or read book Social Sector Development and Governance written by Ramesh Chandra Das and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-06-28 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume explores the impact of good governance upon social sectors’ development in India and other selected economies of the world. Economic development in the true sense depends on the development of different social sectors like education, healthcare, gender equality, etc., as well as economic factors. Good governance makes the sectors perform well on the one hand, and helps in economic growth and development on the other. Conversely, bad or weak governance in the form of corruption and low effectiveness of the governments, may lead to poor performance of the sectors, and low growth and backwardness of the economies. This book explores the associations between different social sectors’ performances with quality of governance, and growth and development of different economies and groups in detail and establishes theoretical and empirical examinations for the individual economies and groups from the different corners of the globe with the help of new theories and latest data. This book will be useful for students and researchers in the fields of Economics, Sociology, Political Studies, Public Finance, International Relations, Social Sciences as well as policy makers and think tanks.

Book Synopsis Applied General Equilibrium Analysis of India's Tax and Trade Policy by : Sameer R. Rege
Download or read book Applied General Equilibrium Analysis of India's Tax and Trade Policy written by Sameer R. Rege and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-10-24 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2003. India's tax revenues depend on manufacturing while agriculture and services generate employment. WTO's Uruguay and Doha rounds imply large tariff cuts. This affects the competitiveness of the Indian manufacturing sector and has implications for government deficits. Excessive dependence on indirect taxes and subsidies to regulate markets introduces distortions and is incompatible with free market principles. The book analyses welfare implications of fiscal and trade policies for India. To put the results in perspective, developments in trade theory, public finance and Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) modelling are covered. Theoretical results are juxtaposed with empirical findings from these models. Methodology to construct CGE models is also covered. The trade model covers tariff cuts under various assumptions besides incorporating "new trade theory". As tax reforms and tariff cuts are independent, past tax reforms like MODVAT (MODified VAT) and proposed reforms like VAT, elimination/reduction of subsidies are covered using a separate tax model.
