Aquestes formacions estan compostes per diversos satèl·lits (agents) connectats per cables (tethers). L'objectiu de la primera part de l'estudi, és l'avaluació de l'efecte de la massa a clústers connectats per múltiples tethers. Degut a la complexitat de les formacions analitzades, l'estabilitat de la formació s'analitza a través de simulacions. S'estudia el comportament pel cas ideal d'orbites circulars, així com en casos no ideals tals com orbites de referència el·liptiques, o moviment sota l'efecte de pertorbacions. La tesi analitza la dinàmica de les formacions per òrbites circulars, mostrant que l'efecte de la massa dels tethers afecta la dinàmica de formacions de geometria tancada (on el perímetre extern esta definit per tethers) amb un satèl·lit central. Aquest efecte dóna lloc a una clara inestabilitat que afecta la posició dels agents respecte a l'objecte central. Aquest efecte no és apreciable en models simplificats on s'ignora l'efecte de la massa al model. Quan es combina una òrbita de referència el·liptica amb un model que incorpora la massa dels tethers, l'efecte més notori és la variació de la velocitat de rotació local del clúster entre el pas per l'apogeu i perigeu de l'òrbita de referència. Aquest efecte té conseqüències sobre l'elongació dels tethers, la forma de les oscil·lacions, i la separació entre tethers adjacents (especialment en el cas de formacions obertes). Quan es té en compte l'efecte de la pertorbació J2, en el cas de formacions orientades envers la Terra, la trajectòria de l'objecte central presenta oscil·lacions d'amplitud creixent en la direcció perpendicular al pla orbital. La segona part de l'estudi es centra en la definició d'una llei de control per regular la posició i orientació d'un clúster amb geometria de doble piràmide orientat envers la Terra. El problema de control es descompon en dos nivells. Un primer nivell per un control primari de posició i orientació del cluster, i un segon nivell per un control de posició precís per a cada agent del cluster. Per tal d'aconseguir el primer nivell de control, i aprofitant les similituds entre un cluster connectat per tethers i un sòlid rígid, s'utilitza la tècnica d'estructura virtual. La formulació utilitzada en aquest estudi amplia el model general d'estructura virtual utilitzat per formacions estàtiques, tot afegint les equacions necessàries per a una formació que gira sobre un eix propi. El controlador esta dissenyat per permetre el canvi de la velocitat de gir i el moment d'inèrcia de la formació a través d'un sistema que permet modificar la longitud dels tethers. D'aquesta forma es permet controlar l'angle d'inclinació de Likins-Pringle del clúster. Per a la definició del control de precisió, l'estudi avalua inicialment diferents alternatives basades en l'estat de l'art de sistemes de control aplicats a robòtica. Després de descartar altres alternatives, es proposen dues lleis de control : Una primera basada en un controlador PID, i una basada en control lliscant. Per l'opció de control lliscant es presenta una demostració d'estabilitat exponencial semiglobal. Els resultats de simulacions confirmen la viabilitat de la solució de control que permet posicionament amb precisió submil·limetrica.

This study examined the dynamics an dcontrols of tethered satellites. The equations of motion were developed and simulated with no control and small eccentric orbits. A control law was derived by associating the Hamiltonian of the system to a Lyapunov Funciton. This control law was then simulated to demonstrate ability and robustness. The tethered system can be retrieved and deployed in a small number of orbits, and return from a perturbation quickly. Examination of a non thruster controlled system resulted in asymptotic convergence in retrieval and station keeping, but the inplane angle, orbital plane, converged during deployment. Time to complete the phases was similar to out of plane thruster controlled. The maximum eccentricities were found for retrieval and deployment when the system started at the perihelion of the orbit with a 100Km tether. Drag was added to the model because it effects the dynamics when the subsatellite is very close to earth. Most of the effects are seen in the inplane angle. At fully deployed the inplane angle was small. A Lyapunov controller for tether satellites works very well under ideal conditions. Once aerodynamics are included into the model, offsets and oscillations occur because of the new forces that unbalance the system compared to the model without drag"--Abstract.

The principal function of this algorithm is to use regular GPS state measurements to determine the controlled satellite's tracking error from a set of reference trajectories in the local-vertical/local-horizontal reference frame. A linear state-feedback control law---designed using a linear quadratic regulator method---calculates the optimal thrusts necessary to correct this error and communicates the thrust directions to the attitude control system and the thrust durations to the propulsion system. The control system is developed to minimize the conflicting metrics of tracking error and DeltaV requirements. To reconfigure the formation, an optimization algorithm is designed using the analytical solution to the state-space equation and the Hill-Clohessy-Wiltshire state transition matrix to solve for dual-thrust reconfiguration maneuvers. The resulting trajectories require low DeltaV, use finite-time thrusts and are accurate in a fully nonlinear orbital environment. This algorithm will be used to control the CanX-4 & 5 formation flying demonstration mission. Finally, an analytical study of the stability of the formation flying algorithm is conducted. To facilitate the proof, the control algorithm is converted into a discrete-time linear time-varying system. Stability of the system is determined via discrete Floquet theory. This analysis is applied to the CanX-4 & 5 control laws for tracking along-track orbits, projected circular orbits, and quasi J2-invariant formations. In addition, an iterative method which numerically generates quasi periodic trajectories for a satellite formation is presented. This novel technique utilizes a shooting approach to the Newton method to close the relative deputy trajectory over a specific number of orbits, then fits the actual perturbed motion of the deputy with a Fourier series to enforce periodicity. This process is applied to two well-known satellite formations: a projected circular orbit and a J2-invariant formation. Compared to conventional formations, these resulting quasi-periodic trajectories require a dramatically lower control effort to maintain and could therefore be used to extend DeltaV-limited formation flying missions.

Book excerpt: Over the last few decades, researchers have realized many potential applications of tethered satellite systems that include atmospheric data collection, placing satellites from low earth orbits into higher orbits, capture of non-functional satellites for service and repair, satellite reboost and deorbiting. The deployment/retrieval dynamics of such systems due to gravity gradient forces is highly nonlinear in nature. Also, due to orbital motion, the longitudinal and transverse motions are coupled. With only boundary control, the tethered satellite system forms a highly underactuated system. In this thesis, we derive and validate the deployment dynamics of such a system following two different basic approaches---Newton's laws and Hamilton's principle. The complexity of the system is studied in an incremental nature using three different models. The problem of controlled deployment/retrieval is approached using a partial feedback linearizing controller. The problem of station keeping is tackled in a more novel way by developing a boundary controller based on the linearization of the infinite dimensional tether system around radial relative equilibrium configuration. Lyapunov function is used to study the stability of the controller on the linearized system. Effectiveness of controllers developed for deployment and station keeping are verified through simulations. We have also studied the dynamics of tethered satellite systems in the presence of electrodynamic forces due to the magnetic field of the earth. We propose a novel method to the control the tether configurations in the presence of electrodynamic forces.
