Book excerpt: Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) provide a testbed for a wide array of coherent structures with complex dynamical properties. Of these structures, vortices and two-component BECs are at the forefront in understanding fundamental properties of BECs and have been under intense scrutiny in both experiments and theoretical studies. The behavior of these structures elucidates the mechanics of nonlinear processes that give rise to patterns in vortex lattices and patterns in binary BECs. This has lead to the integration of BECs into the new field of emergent phenomena that has unified many seemingly unrelated disciplines because at a fundamental level, the nonlinear processes provide a blueprint to give rise to coherence out of randomness. First, we study the interactions between two atomic species in a binary BEC to determine conditions for miscibility, oscillations between species, steady state solutions and their stability. Second, the two component system is extended to a quasi-2D systems for a pancake-shaped condensate. Third, the shape of the background atomic density as well as the background with a vortex is studied to determine the role of the phase and background on the precession of a vortex. Lastly, the dynamics of small clusters of same charge vortices in a trapped BEC is studied giving fixed point configurations that rotate at a constant speed.

Book excerpt: Dilute gas Bose-Einstein condensates are ultracold quantum gases that display many peculiar hydrodynamic properties, such as superfluidity, i.e. dissipation-less flow, a variety of solitonic textures and quantized vortex structures. Small amplitude excitations within a Bose-Einstein condensate are described by the Bogoliubov dispersion, and have been extensively studied in the past. This dissertation extends previous studies by focusing on strong, nonlinear excitations and shock structures generated in elongated Rb-87 Bose-Einstein condensates, elucidating novel dynamics in these quantum systems.This dissertation is separated into two major parts. In the first part, the building and characterization of a new Bose-Einstein condensate apparatus at Washington State University is described. This apparatus has been built to generate ultracold clouds of Rb-87 and, more recently, K-41atoms. A description of the setups for both isotopes are provided. The apparatus reliably produces Bose-Einstein condensates of 7 x 105 Rb-87 atoms every 20 seconds.In the second part of this dissertation, three experiments in a channel geometry are described that have been conducted with the new apparatus. In this part of the dissertation, quantum hydrodynamic properties are probed by using time-dependent optical potentials to generate nonlinear excitations and shock structures in an elongated Bose-Einstein condensate. An emergence of viscous-like shock dynamics, unidirectionality of a non-magnetic spin switch device, and the structure of dispersive shock waves in new types of higher order dispersions are observed. The work described in this dissertation establishes a novel platform for studying strong nonlinear effects in ultracold quantum gases.

Book excerpt: At extremely low temperatures, clouds of bosonic atoms form what is known as a Bose-Einstein condensate. Recently, it has become clear that many different types of condensates -- so called fragmented condensates -- exist. In order to tell whether fragmentation occurs or not, it is necessary to solve the full many-body Schrödinger equation, a task that remained elusive for experimentally relevant conditions for many years. In this thesis the first numerically exact solutions of the time-dependent many-body Schrödinger equation for a bosonic Josephson junction are provided and compared to the approximate Gross-Pitaevskii and Bose-Hubbard theories. It is thereby shown that the dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensates is far more intricate than one would anticipate based on these approximations. A special conceptual innovation in this thesis are optimal lattice models. It is shown how all quantum lattice models of condensed matter physics that are based on Wannier functions, e.g. the Bose/Fermi Hubbard model, can be optimized variationally. This leads to exciting new physics.

Book excerpt: In this thesis we investigate the static properties and non-equilibrium dynamics of bright solitary waves in atomic Bose-Einstein condensates in the zero-temperature limit, and we investigate the non-equilibrium dynamics of a driven atomic Bose-Einstein condensate at finite temperature. Bright solitary waves in atomic Bose-Einstein condensates are non-dispersive and soliton-like matter-waves which could be used in future atom-interferometry experiments. Using the mean-field, Gross-Pitaevskii description, we propose an experimental scheme to generate pairs of bright solitary waves with controlled velocity and relative phase; this scheme could form an important part of a future atom interferometer, and we demonstrate that it can also be used to test the validity of the mean-field model of bright solitary waves. We also develop a method to quantitatively assess how soliton-like static, three-dimensional bright solitary waves are; this assessment is particularly relevant for the design of future experiments. In reality, the non-zero temperatures and highly non-equilibrium dynamics occurring in a bright solitary wave interferometer are likely to necessitate a theoretical description which explicitly accounts for the non-condensate fraction. We show that a second-order, number-conserving description offers a minimal self-consistent treatment of the relevant condensate -- non-condensate interactions at low temperatures and for moderate non-condensate fractions. We develop a method to obtain a fully-dynamical numerical solution to the integro-differential equations of motion of this description, and solve these equations for a driven, quasi-one-dimensional test system. We show that rapid non-condensate growth predicted by lower-order descriptions, and associated with linear dynamical instabilities, can be damped by the self-consistent treatment of interactions included in the second-order description.
