Book excerpt: Building on The Dynamics of Keynesian Monetary Growth by Chiarella and Flaschel (2000), this book is a key contribution to business cycle theory, setting out a disequilibrium approach with gradual adjustments of the key macroeconomic variables. Its analytic study of a deterministic model of economic activity, inflation and income distribution integrates elements in the tradition of Keynes, Metzler and Goodwin (KMG). After a qualitative analysis of the basic feedback mechanisms, the authors calibrate the KMG model to the stylized facts of the business cycle in the U.S. economy, and then undertake a detailed numerical investigation of the local and global dynamics generated by the model. Finally, topical issues in monetary policy are studied in small macromodels as well as for the KMG model by incorporating an estimated Taylor-type interest rate reaction function. The stability features of this enhanced model are also compared to those of the original KMG model.

Both shortcomings can be overcome by disequilibrium growth theory. A problem arises, however, because different short term disequilibrium regimes give rise to differential equations. The dynamic analysis, therefore, has to take into consideration the possibility of regime switching. Various solutions have been put forward for this problem, but they generally do not give unique solutions. The method developed by Filippov gives a unique solution that coincides with the classical solution to differential equations in the interior of the regimes. This approach has been used in several papers in the past decade. This book seeks to fill the gap in the literature on what has been achieved so far.

Book excerpt: In this paper we survey, also for the general reader interested in the non-market cleaning approach to growth and fluctuations, the foundations, the core model and the general framework underlying our joint work on integrated disequilibrium models of monetary growth, drawing also on joint work with further co-authors in various places. We found the basic working model of this type on appropriately reformulated and extended partial dynamic models already existing in the literature. We then develop the obtained working model further into a theoretical continuous-time disequilibrium growth model of a very general nature. We then show that there are strong relationships between our general model and models currently used for structural macroeconomic model-building and their applications. In this way we want to contribute both to the further development and analysis of full-sized theoretical models of disequilibrium growth and to the theoretical penetration of their modern counterparts in the applied literature. Such development and analysis is based on detailed steady state analyses, on use of theoretical investigations of all important subdynamics that are there involved (in isolation as well as in their interaction) and, on computer simulations based on a variety of modern numerical tools of nonlinear dynamical analysis.

The list of such questions can easily be extended with dozens of others. But despite the myriad of questions on problems of nonlinear evolution, one common trait is evident: in both the natural and the social sciences we are still groping in the dark in areas which are par excellence promising hunting grounds for exploratory and exploratory research, viz. structural grounds in an uncertain nonlinear world. In part I, the representative-agent stochastic growth model is solved with the help of value function iteration, linear and linear quadratic approximation methods, parameterised expectations and projection methods. In order to apply these methods, fundamentals from numerical analysis are reviewed in detail. In particular, the book discusses issues that are often neglected in existing work on computational methods, e.g. how to find a good initial value. In part II, the authors discuss methods in order to solve heterogeneous-agent economies. In such economies, the distribution of the individual state variables is endogenous. This part of the book also serves as an introduction to the modern theory of distribution economics. Applications include the dynamics of the income distribution over the business cycle or the overlapping-generations model. In an accompanying home page to this book, computer codes to all applications can be downloaded.
