Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents a survey of our state of knowledge of the physical and dynamical processes involved in the Asian monsoon. Although traditionally the main emphasis has been on the study of the atmospheric component, it has long been known that the oceans play a vitally important part in determining the occurrence of this spectacular seasonal event. A scientific study of this phenomenon involves a detailed investigation of the dynamical processes which occur in both the atmosphere and the ocean, on timescales on up to at least a year and on spatial scales from a few hundred kilometres or so up to that of the global atmospheric and oceanic circulations. The editors present a coherent survey of each of the meteorological, oceanographic and hydrological aspects and of their implications for weather forecasting and flood prediction. Monsoon Dynamics is a timely survey of a dramatic meteorological phenomenon which will interest meteorologists, climatologists and geophysicists.

Book excerpt: This book presents a current review of the science of monsoon research and forecasting. The contents are based on the invited reviews presented at the World Meteorological Organization's Fourth International Workshop on Monsoons in late 2008, with subsequent manuscripts revised from 2009 to early 2010. The book builds on the concept that the monsoons in various parts of the globe can be viewed as components of an integrated global monsoon system, while emphasizing that significant region-specific characteristics are present in individual monsoon regions. The topics covered include all major monsoon regions and time scales (mesoscale, synoptic, intraseasonal, interannual, decadal, and climate change). It is intended to provide an updated comprehensive review of the current status of knowledge, modeling capability, and future directions in the research of monsoon systems around the world.

Book excerpt: Cloud physics has achieved such a voluminous literature over the past few decades that a significant quantitative study of the entire field would prove unwieldy. This book concentrates on one major aspect: cloud microphysics, which involves the processes that lead to the formation of individual cloud and precipitation particles. Common practice has shown that one may distinguish among the following additional major aspects: cloud dynamics, which is concerned with the physics responsible for the macroscopic features of clouds; cloud electricity, which deals with the electrical structure of clouds and the electrification processes of cloud and precipitation particles; and cloud optics and radar meteorology, which describe the effects of electromagnetic waves interacting with clouds and precipitation. Another field intimately related to cloud physics is atmospheric chemistry, which involves the chemical composition of the atmosphere and the life cycle and characteristics of its gaseous and particulate constituents. In view of the natural interdependence of the various aspects of cloud physics, the subject of microphysics cannot be discussed very meaningfully out of context. Therefore, we have found it necessary to touch briefly upon a few simple and basic concepts of cloud dynamics and thermodynamics, and to provide an account of the major characteristics of atmospheric aerosol particles. We have also included a separate chapter on some of the effects of electric fields and charges on the precipitation-forming processes.

Book excerpt: The Pennsylvania State University/National Center of Atmospheric Research Mesoscale Model 5 (MM5) is forced by the observed evolution of sea surface temperature and the National Center for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) reanalyses of the atmospheric flow on the lateral boundaries. The MM5 reproduces many of the general features of the large-scale circulation found in the NCEP reanalyses. It does, however, develop a stronger regional meridional circulation with higher precipitation rates in the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ), stronger cross-equatorial flow in the boundary layer, and greater divergent flow aloft. The model ITCZ is displaced too far north and tends to be located over the highest sea surface temperature. Mesoscale circulation features, such as diurnal land/sea breezes and gap flows across Mexico and Central America, are captured. The observed latitudinal transition from the shallow planetary boundary layer (PBL) with stratiform clouds over the cool waters of the equatorial Pacific to a relatively deeper PBL further north is simulated by the model. More tropical cyclones develop in the MM5 than were observed and they were comparatively shorter-lived and weaker. Also, the model, as presently configured, does not realistically simulate the year-to-year variations in tropical cyclones. The regional circulation during Summer 1997 was dominated by the planetary- scale El Nino/Southern Oscillation phenomenon. The normally cool waters along the equator were unusually warm with enhanced convection to the south of the mean position of the ITCZ. Large-scale subsidence over Central America and the extreme eastern Pacific Ocean led to drought conditions in that region. The number and intensity of tropical cyclones observed during summer 1997 in the eastern equatorial Pacific were reduced despite the fact that the most intense hurricane of the eight seasons occurred during that year.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite major advances in the observation and numerical simulation of the atmosphere, basic features of the Earth's climate remain poorly understood. Integrating the available data and computational resources to improve our understanding of the global circulation of the atmosphere remains a challenge. Theory must play a critical role in meeting this challenge. This book provides an authoritative summary of the state of the art on this front. Bringing together sixteen of the field's leading experts to address those aspects of the global circulation of the atmosphere most relevant to climate, the book brings the reader up to date on the key frontiers in general circulation theory-including the nonlinear and turbulent global-scale dynamics that determine fundamental aspects of the Earth's climate. While emphasizing theory, as expressed through relatively simple mathematical models, it also draws connections to simulations with comprehensive general circulation models. Topics include the dynamics of storm tracks, interactions between wave dynamics and the hydrological cycle, monsoons, tropical and extratropical dynamics and interactions, and the processes controlling atmospheric humidity. An essential resource for graduate students in atmospheric, ocean, and climate sciences and for researchers seeking an overview of the field, The Global Circulation of the Atmosphere sets the standard for future research in a science that stands at a critical juncture. With a foreword by Edward Lorenz, the book includes chapters by Christopher Bretherton; Kerry Emanuel; Isaac Held; David Neelin; Raymond Pierrehumbert, Hélène Brogniez, and Rémy Roca; Alan Plumb; Walter Robinson; Tapio Schneider; Richard Seager and David Battisti; Adam Sobel; Kyle Swanson; and Pablo Zurita-Gotor and Richard Lindzen.

Book excerpt: Out of the five equatorial vortices studied in this investigation, the following significant features are obtained. 1. Disturbances in the trades associated with lateral shear were found to be important for the genesis of these equatorial vortices. 2. Intensification of these disturbances depended very much on the timing of the occurrence of the cold surge and the presence of the disturbance in the trades. 3. Low-Ievel easterly jets at 850 mb were found over the northem part of Peninsular Malaysia during the intensification stage of the four equatorial vortices that interacted with the cold monsoon surge and brought heavy rain to Peninsular Malaysia. Associated with the jet there was significant vertical shear about 20 knots between the lower and middle troposphere. 4. Heavy rain was confined to the cyc10nic shear side of the easterly jet and around the near-equatorial trough axis. 5. For the equatorial vortex that brought along heavy rain only to Sarawak, the low-Ievel easterly jet was absent over Peninsular Malaysia even though there was intense cold surge. 6. For those vortices that affected Peninsular Malaysia, the vertical wind fields were distincdy different from those associated with the vortex that affected only Sarawak. 7. For the maintenance and intensification of the disturbances, a complex combination of CISK mechanism and mixed barotropic and baroc1inic instability is suspected.

The long-range forecasting of the seasonal rainfall anomalies associated with teleconnections is of paramount interest for monsoon prediction and other associated climatic risks. Scientific investigation entitled, "Regional monsoon dynamics and teleconnections" was carried out for the meteorological sub-division comprising of the provinces of Haryana, Delhi and Chandigarh. The annual mean rainfall ranged 402.3 mm at Sirsa and 1122.4 mm at Chandigarh. Contribution of monsoon season was maximum (77 to 82%) in annual rainfall. Strong relationship between teleconnections and all India monsoon rainfall was observed. But, this significant association was missing at different locations. The regression models developed for prediction of location specific monsoon rainfall overestimated the rainfall. The knowledge allows the linkage between the regional monsoon rainfall anomalies, normal rainfall cycle, and the circulation features associated with teleconnections for fine tuning the prediction system for sustainable agricultural development.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses specifically on bin and bulk parameterizations for the prediction of cloud and precipitation at various scales - the cloud scale, mesoscale, synoptic scale, and the global climate scale. It provides a background to the fundamental principles of parameterization physics, including processes involved in the production of clouds, ice particles, liquid water, snow aggregate, graupel and hail. It presents full derivations of the parameterizations, allowing readers to build parameterization packages, with varying levels of complexity based on information in the book. Architectures for a range of dynamical models are given, in which parameterizations form a significant tool for investigating large non-linear numerical systems. Model codes are available online at www.cambridge.org/9780521883382. Written for researchers and advanced students of cloud and precipitation microphysics, this book is also a valuable reference for all atmospheric scientists involved in models of numerical weather prediction.
