Elastic optical networks (EONs) are promising optical backbone network candidates to satisfy these new challenges. Based on optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (O-OFDM) technology, elastic optical networks support different high line rates beyond 100 Gb/s, while achieving higher spectrum resource efficiency. Furthermore, in elastic optical networks, we can use different modulation formats such as DP-BPSK, DP-QPSK, and DP-16-QAM to set up lightpath connections so as to raise spectrum resource utilization. In this dissertation, in terms of different traffic demands, we study the problem of routing, modulation and spectrum assignment (RMSA) in elastic optical networks. First, we study the routing, modulation and spectrum assignment problem for holding-time-aware network requests. In elastic optical networks, for each line rate request with certain holding time, we need to allocate enough spectrum resource to satisfy the requirement. We divide the requests into two types, those that include immediate reservation (IR) requests and those with advance reservation (AR) requests. In terms of different requests, we design different heuristic algorithms to satisfy their requirement. Second, spectrum fragmentation in elastic optical networks is another important issue that we need to consider. When we set up and tear down lightpath connections in EONs, the spectrum resource will be fragmented, which decreases spectrum resource utilization. In this work, we mainly consider two types of fragmentation including spectrum fragmentation and time fragmentation. We design fragmentation-aware routing, modulation and spectrum assignment algorithms to proactively prevent spectrum fragments. Third, large data-flow transfer is a big challenge for elastic optical networks. Data-flow transfer such as data backup and data migration grow exponentially among datacenters. Hence, we study how to transfer fixed data amount in a certain time domain. A dynamic routing, modulation and spectrum assignment algorithm is designed to meet data-flow transfer in elastic optical networks. Finally, the survivability problem for data-flow transfer plays a vital role in elastic optical inter-datacenter networks. Man-made errors and uncontrollable natural disaster will result in a huge data loss. In order to meet service level agreement (SLA), we need to set up a protection lightpath connection for each data-flow transfer. In this dissertation, we design survivable bulk data-flow transfer strategies for each data-flow transfer.

Optical fiber communication and networking with wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) provides a promising means to support the communication needs of grid computing, by offering huge capacity, relatively low latency, as well as dynamic control and allocation of bandwidth at various granularities. In this dissertation, we explore several important and challenging issues in optical WDM networks for supporting grid computing: Diverse Routing for Survivable Service: Grid computing requires survivable communication services due to the huge traffic volume involved. We study the diverse routing problem in networks with a shared risk link group (SRLGs) failure. An SRLG includes a set of optical links that are affected by a single failure in the physical layer of a WDM network. The objective is to determine a pair of SRLG-disjoint paths with the minimum total cost. Quality of Service Routing: To ensure the quality of service for grid communication, connections with bounded risk of failure and transmission delay are highly desirable. We study the multi-constrained routing problem that finds a path that guarantees the end-to-end failure risk bound in terms of total weight of SRLGs while minimizing the end-to-end transmission delay bound, or the path cost. Scheduled Service Provisioning using Light-trails: The recently proposed light-trail concept is a promising technique in WDM optical networks for supporting the grid computing traffic given light-trails' dynamic provisioning ability. We model the grid communication demands as a scheduled traffic model, in which a set of demands is given and the setup time, teardown time, and the requested bandwidth of a demand are known in advance. We consider efficient provisioning scheduled services for supporting grid communication using static and dynamic light-trails. Cost Effective Services with Waveband Switching and Light-trails: Waveband switching allows several wavelength channels to be batch switched and therefore reduces the number of ports needed in the switches, so that the complexity and cost of switching nodes can be significantly reduced. We study the waveband switching technology in conjunction with the light-trail architecture for supporting grid computing. This study provides us with critical insights into the designing problem of applying waveband switching technology into light-trail optical networks. Joint Scheduling of Grid Tasks and Communication: Finally, we propose to tackle the service provisioning problem in light-trail WDM networks that jointly considers the grid task scheduling problem for supporting the grid computing. A flexible task model (FTM) is presented for modeling the grid tasks. This model is more general and flexible than the conventional task graph model considered in previous work. Simulation results show that our scheduling algorithm with FTM significantly reduces the total task completion time, compared with the results obtained using the conventional method. It reviews and classifies different RSA approaches, including their pros and cons. It focuses on different aspects related to RSA. The spectrum fragmentation is a serious issue in EONs, which needs to be managed. Book excerpt: Wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) optical networks are widely viewed as the most appropriate choice for future Internet backbone with the potential to fulfill the ever-growing demands for bandwidth. WDM divides the enormous bandwidth of an optical fiber into many non-overlapping wavelength channels, each of which may operate at the rate of 10 Gigabit per second or higher. A failure in a network such as a cable cut may result in a tremendous loss of data. Therefore, survivability is a very important issue in WDM optical networks. The objective of this dissertation is to address the survivability provisioning problem in WDM optical networks under a scheduled traffic model and a sliding scheduled traffic model that we propose. In contrast to the conventional traffic models considered in communication networks such as static traffic model and dynamic random traffic model, the scheduled traffic model and the sliding scheduled traffic model are able to capture the traffic characteristics of applications that require capacity on a time-limited basis. They also give service providers more flexibility in provisioning the requested demands and a better opportunity to optimize the network resources. The survivability provisioning problem is to determine a pair of link-disjoint paths under the link failure model or a pair of SRLG-disjoint paths under the Shared Risk Link Group (SRLG) failure model, one working path and one protection path, for each demand in a given set of traffic demands with the objective of minimizing the total resources used by all traffic demands while 100% restorability is guaranteed against any single failure. To provision survivable service under the scheduled traffic model, we develop two sets of integer linear program (ILP) formulations for joint and non-joint optimizations using different protection schemes such as dedicated and shared path based protections. We also design a capacity provision matrix based Iterative Survivable Routing (ISR) algorithm with different demand scheduling policies to solve the survivable routing and wavelength assignment (RWA) problem. In addition, we extend the heuristic algorithm design from dealing with single link failure to single SRLG failure. The issue of survivability provisioning in WDM optical networks under the sliding scheduled traffic model has never been addressed by the research community. In the dissertation, we carry out the following tasks under this traffic model: (a) development of RWA ILP optimization formulations for dedicated and shared path based protection; (b) design and implementation of efficient heuristic algorithms for shared path based protection. Specifically, in the proposed heuristic algorithm, we introduce a demand time conflict reduction algorithm to minimize the time overlapping among a set of demands by properly placing a demand within its associated time window; and (c) extending the heuristic algorithm design under the single link failure model to the single SRLG failure model.

Abstract: Optical networks with Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) technology provide huge bandwidth to meet the ever-increasing traffic demand of the next generation Internet. But the high-speed nature of WDM networks also makes the network more vulnerable to failures. Even a single network failure for a very short duration can result in enormous loss of data. In this thesis, we concentrate on designing a survivable WDM network. In essence, survivability concerns two important aspects, fast fault detection and localization, and fast fault recovery. We first study fast fault detection and localization in WDM optical networks. Our work is based on the notion of monitoring cycle (m-cycle). Compared with other fault detection schemes, an m-cycle based fault detection scheme provides fast fault detection and requires less number of expensive monitors. Aiming at further cutting down the implementation cost, we propose the notion of super monitor. Instead of having a dedicated monitor for each m-cycle, a single super monitor can be placed at the junction of a set of overlapped m-cycles. In this thesis, we formulate and solve the monitor placement problem. We then focus on enhancing the capacity efficiency of fast fault recovery schemes. Shared backup path protection (SBPP) schemes can provide 100% protection against any single link failure. This is achieved by establishing a pair of link-disjoint active and backup paths upon each call arrival. The bandwidth on different backup paths can be shared for protecting different calls. In this thesis, a new SBPP scheme is designed based on a two-step routing approach, where the active and backup paths are sequentially optimized with different objectives in mind. We then shift our focus to design fast protection scheme for multicast/broadcast communications. To this end, we refine the existing concept of blue/red tree. Blue/red tree is a pair of spanning trees where the connectivity between the root and any destination node is ensured upon a network failure. In particular, two efficient integer linear programs (ILPs) are formulated for finding the optimal blue/red trees. Last but not the least, we investigate the survivability in IP networks. We notice that existing efforts on IP fast reroute (IPFRR) are effective in enhancing the IP resilience. But the impact of IPFRR on the end-to-end TCP performance is ignored. Notably, path rerouting can interfere with the TCP congestion control mechanism and thus cause severe throughput degradation. To address this problem, we propose a duplicate acknowledgement (ACK) suppression scheme. The key idea is to detect whether an out-of-order packet arrival event is due to IPFRR or not. If it is due to IPFRR, duplicate ACKs triggered will be suppressed by the TCP receiver so as not to cause unnecessary slow down at the TCP sender.
