Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents both the fundamental theory and numerical calculations and field experiments used in a range of practical engineering projects. It not only provides theoretical formulations and various solutions, but also offers concrete methods to extend the life of existing bridge structures and presents a guide to the rational design of new bridges, such as high-speed railway bridges and long-span bridges. Further, it offers a reference resource for solving vehicle–structure dynamic interaction problems in the research on and design of all types of highways, railways and other transport structures.

Book excerpt: "A great deal of information has been published in the last decade concerning ice forces. Unfortunately, very little has been published in journals that are regularly read by civil engineers and, in particular, bridge engineers. As a result, many bridge engineers who are concerned with the action of ice on bridge structures are unaware of its existence. Most of the material contained herein has been extracted from papers or proceedings of specialty conferences or reports of research agencies. The objective of this paper is to present an overview of the problem and to bring together in one publication a state-of-the-art review of factors and phenomena which are significant to the ice force problems as they relate to the design of bridge piers"--Page 3-4

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is an increasing need to construct engineering structures in the Arctic sea. The requirement is principally generated by the oil and gas industry, because of the substantial reserves that are known to existing offshore in the Beaufort Sea, the Caspian Sea, the Barents Sea, the Pacific Ocean off the cost of Sakhalin, the Canadian Arctic, and almost certainly elsewhere. Structures have to withstand the severe environmental forces generated by sea ice, a subject that is developing rapidly but is still far from completely understood. Underwater pipelines have to be safe against ice gouging and strudel scour, but also have to be constructed safely and economically. The social and human environment has to be understood and respected. This important book intentionally takes a broad view, and vividly accounts for the many and often subtle interactions between the different factors. It is illustrated by case studies of actual projects.

Book excerpt: This volume is a collection of papers presented at the U.S.-Austria Joint Seminar on Stochastic Structural Mechanics held on May 4 and 5, 1987. The general theme of the two-day program was the applications of probability and statistics to structural mechanics. Within this general theme a great variety of subject matters were covered, ranging from analytical and computational algorithms to specific problems in different branches of engineering. The format of the bi-national seminar with limited attendance permitted ample time for presentation and discussion. The discussion was als6 contributed by several participants of another bi-national seminar, the U.S.-Japan Joint Seminar on Stochastic Approaches in Earthquake Engineering, which followed immediately on May 6 and 7, 1987. The scheduling of the two seminars back-to-back enhanced greatly the exchange among the experts in engineering stochastics from the three nations. The Joint Seminar was organized according to the U.S.-Austria Cooperative Science Program established in 1984. We are indebted to the following government agencies and organizations for financial assistance, including the National Science Foundation, and the Florida Atlantic University Foundation in the United States, and Fonds zur Forderung der wissenschaftlichen Forschung, Land Tirol, Bundeswirtschaftskammer, Bundesministerium flir Wissenschaft und Forschung, and Osterreichische Forschungsgemeinschaft in Austria. Most credits, however, must be accorded to each of the authors whose contributions were the very basis of any success we might be able to claim. Our special thanks are due to Mrs.
