Book excerpt: Both solid to gas (CaSO4 + SiO yields SiO3 + S02 and Si3N4 + 3C (diamond) and 3SiC + 2 N2) can be shock-induced at ballistic velocities. Because of the endothermic nature of the gas-producing reactions, the extent of reactions observed are limited to interfaces. We found the above reactions proceed to a much less extent than calculation by equilibrium thermodynamic calculations. Reaction products are found to be 0.01 times those calculated for equilibrium. We show that the extent of reaction, rather than limited by the usual diffusion processes appears to be controlled by dynamic mixing processes arising from Rayleigh-Taylor instabilities at, for example, CaSiO4-SiO2 interfaces. Book excerpt: Controlled impact methods have been employed to obtain dynamic response properties of armor materials. Experimental data have been obtained for high-strength ceramics. Continued analysis of time-resolved velocity interferometer measurements has produced systematic material-property data for Hugoniot and release response, initial and post-yield strength, pressure-induced phase transformation, and dynamic fracture strength. A new technique has been developed to measure hydrodynamic properties of ceramic through shock-wave experiments on metal-ceramic composites and data obtained for silicon carbide. Additional data on several titanium diboride ceramics and high-quality aluminum oxide ceramic have been acquired, and issues regarding the influence of microstructure on dynamic properties have emerged. Comparison of dynamic (Hugoniot elastic limit) strength and indentation hardness data has been performed and important correlations revealed. Innovative impact experiments on confined and unconfined alumina rods using axial and transverse VISAR diagnostics have been demonstrated which permit acquisition of multiaxial dynamic response data. Dynamic failure properties of a high-density aluminosilicate glass, similar in composition to the intergranular glassy phase of some aluminas, have been investigated with regard to yield, spall, and failure-wave propagation.
